I think I figured out the "killed enemies with counterattacks" stat. I noticed that during one of the grinds you fought bob-ombs which blew themselves up during their own attack. Because of this, the game could have thought that you killed the enemy with a counterattack due to them dying on their turn. That or maybe the counter damage from the payback lightning could have counted as counterattack damage and thus would have counted as a counterattack kill if it did kill something during a grind.

I don't think this is it, since I killed like a hundred Bob-ombs or more while grinding including off camera. Payback lightning is worth considering but I'm sure I didn't kill 8 enemies with it.

@@masterblaster38 It revolves around exiting a toad mission by abnormal means (this typically means going out of bounds in order to reach a load zone you're not not supposed to interact with during the mission). This puts you back in the regular game, but the game thinks you're still doing the mission (a potential side-effect is the slide ability still being usable). You then proceed to lose any battle on purpose and choose to return to title screen. That's not supposed to happen during a mission, so the battle is cancelled instead. Conveniently, there's only one other way for the battle to end if it's followed immediately by a cutscene... which luckily includes all the boss fights in the main game. The game has no alternate events for a boss fight ending without you beating it, as you're not supposed to be able to flee from them, which means the only way the game can proceed is by playing out the cutscene that follows your victory, allowing you to proceed with the story.

Glad some people like this game. I don't think it's bad, just a major disappointment mainly because A. None of the bosses are unique B. Toads are the generic NPCs, C. The plot is generic (double the Bowsers, double the Peach kidnapping). The Papercraft fights aren't as epic as the Giant fights. However, Paper Jam does not disappoint in the music department and that seems to be a regular thing in the series lol

Yeah it’s rather unfortunate. I really don’t even think it was really alphadream’s fault. Nintendo had an tendency around the time of their bankruptcy (less so now) to give every Mario IP the “Nee Super Mario Bros” Treatment (Just look at Paper Mario), and Paper Jam just got hit with it as well. As such, it hurt sales and Alphadream couldn’t find a way to make it work for them.

To be honest after seeing your Bowser's inside story video on this topic I tried mario and Luigi paper jam and it was going pretty good so far a close call with the hammer bro stealing your stuff segment which I just skipped but then I got to the wiggler and you know what the sentence on 10:33 explains it best I proceeded to quit the run when I ran into this because I hate grinding but I'm glad you persevered and made it through!

if you revisit this, or another challenge on this game(it would be really interesting a no damage run, or a no bros/trio attacks), i strongly would suguest that the first permanent bonus you get from ranks is the exp one, since it will make grinds a lot less tedious, and you will get more exp on any battle, including bosses, also making easier for you to get more rank bonuses at least, that is what i did in my playthrough

As someone who is a diehard fan of Paper Jam, this was very fun to see. However, I didn’t really use cards a lot for “fair fights” or whatever I was thinking. Would have helped for King Boo, that was the *ONLY TIME I HAD TO USE EASY MODE*. Danerade and Danerade Jr was hilarious, and I didn’t know the penultimate final boss gave you an instant game over if you failed, not that you can actually survive the otherwise instant death explosion from King Bob-omb. I wanted to spend some time in this chat section documenting my attempt against Wiggler in the Gloomy Woods, and some things that might've helped in hindsight of this video. For context on advice given, I didn't use any level-drop battle cards or any of the bean items until late-game, but had prior knowledge to bank on. Stats for previous attempts: Lv 15 Mario (Knockout Boots, Iron-Ball Hammer, Cozy Wear, DEF Mush Jams / HP Up+, Gear Slot +1) Lv 15 Luigi (Bare Boots, Fighter Hammer, Koopa Troopa Wear, Counter belt / Def Up+, Gear Slot +1) Lv 15 Paper Mario (Paper Boots, Flimsy Hammer, Counter wear, Copy Bangle / BP up+, Gear Slot +1) Battlecard Deck: •Restore 20% of all HP •Raise DEF by 25% •Lower enemy POW by 30% •Boost star point gain by 50% •Nullify all damage 2 times •Nullify all damage 2 times with emergency guard •Nullify all damage once w/ emergency guard •Nullify 1 instance of 50+ damage •Emergency Guard reduces another 40% This fight was absolutely grueling, even when well-prepared. Paper mario would often die from full copies if he got tripped, and I had to play extremely defensively. The attire choice allows the bros to scale DEF alongside Wiggler's POW and amplify the DEF buff card, as well as for Luigi to hit respectable damage whenever Paper Mario died. I entered the fight with my null cards in front and 20 star points to burn, so my first action was creating 5 barriers. The 50+ barrier is for the wigger ball of doom; since it only hits once, it can often be preferrable if they're still up. If you can't one-cycle Paper Kamek, the chase sequences go from strategic play to death sentences! You'll need every advantage you can get, plenty of items, and inconceivable patience. When wiggler does his chase sequence, you can run into the Monty Mole and use Emergency Guard like a parry on the rest in order to avoid being crushed. The Paper spear guys backing up Wiggler can absolutely shred your nullifiers due to their multi-hits; having the null attached to emergency block ensured you can have some for wiggler's attacks. And though paper mario dies easily, I still revive him when possible because it's another turn available, as well as Trio attack's damage output. Shredding the Paper guys was often a side-effect of Rocket Blast and Fire Flower: I focused my damage primarily on wiggler. Trio Racquet is GREAT for shredding those pesky spear-throwers, but terrible at damaging wiggler; use Trio Kite if Wiggler's your target. And keep your health near-max: half health can be fatal. Stats for successful attempt: Lv 19 Mario (Knockout Boots, Flame Hammer, Rally Wear, Charge gloves / HP up+, Gear Slot +1, Iron Body) Lv 19 Luigi (Bare Boots, Iron-ball hammer, Koopa Troopa Wear, 1-up Gloves / Def up+, Gear Slot +1, Iron body) Lv 19 Paper Mario (Origami Boots, Flimsy Hammer, Counter Wear, Copy Bangle / BP up+, Gear Slot +1, Copy Max +2) Changes in Battle Deck: •20% heal replaced by 30% •25% revive card (wasn't used, maybe replace with atk buf / bp heal?) •30% DEF buff, 30% POW debuff •+50% Star Point gain. •Dropped +40% emergency guard for "Maxes out Paper Mario's Copies." I took extra copies instead of iron head because i believed a lot of paper mario's durability is centered on having copies to soak damage; also combos well with the last-mentioned battle card. I got enough challenge points for the 1-up gloves due to multi-tasking my grinding; Hardworking Bros & Trio, Card Veteran, Lucky Megastar, Headstart, Wildfire, And I A-ranked Petey Pirannah in Lakitu's illegal underground operation for "Item-Free Victory" and "Do it yourself." Of course, this doesn't include the smaller challenges that contributed. Ironically, i killed wiggler before his second turn, and practically one-shot paper kamek with Fire Flower just like this video! Nontheless, i hope this little documentary helps others interested in creative challenges, and thanks to ShyGuyMask for giving me this inspiration!

I playing dream team on emulator (and i don't love giant boss)

@@Fymles I use Citra and I can emulate the gyroscope and turning the console but this fights are horrible because I play with the keyboard and the mouse, I have to hold and drag in the direction of the arrows for dodging some attack and for the brother move and repeat (I don't know his english name), my screen is not enought large and I am not enought fast for all his dodges and attack (without slowing the game and save state) the gyroscope emulate is not easy to control (for me, I am never managed to have an excellent in the first luimagik attack). These fights are hard for me (I use google translate, I am a french player.)

Fantastic video! Side note, I might try to do my own Dream Team dodgeless since you don't want to, but I don't have a 3DS Capture Card yet, and they're expensive.

I was planning on it but i don't have a capture card either but i think ill just note down any boss strats including giant bosses and any impossible stuff (like giant bosses ) although i can't think any impossible ones of the top of my head If anyone remembers a counter or die boss in that game pls tell me

@@stovebot4280 Smoldergeist and Thunder Sass are going to be nightmares for figuring out how many dodges to kill, since the former requires dodging to hurt, and the latter has a gimmick where you can't attack (and no first strikes either.) Even with glitches, we still need to fight Zeekeeper to get to Neo Bowser's Castle, which is a giant battle. Needless to say, Dream Team is looking like an endless nightmare right now.

Also idk any glitches so ill either have to look them up or do a glitchless run also i want to see how many ex bosses i can beat I know i can oneshot water pump along with a couple others but things like antasma might be impossible without a ridiculous level

14:43 there're two ways to explain this, for the paper characters they use multiple flat models put one above another so the different parts of the body move independantly like in the thousand year door or is like Mr Game and Watch on Smash, a 3d model that was turned flat, the real characters as you said are just really detailed sprites, I hope this help someone to understand and I apologize if there was something wrong and for my english

For anyone wondering While I haven't Beaten the game regularly. I know for a fact It's Not Possible to beat Mario and Luigi Dream Team without dodging. And it's for One Reason and One Reason only. The Fight With Thunder Sass. All you can do is Heal or do nothing for your turn and you have to counter to deal damage. Basically Shrowser From Partners in time but you can heal this time. Also might I add, THUNDER SASS' FIGHT IS AN EARLY GAME FIGHT!

I have a bit of a different challenge for you then. M&L Dream Team, Stache only. All level up points must be put in Stache, and no stat upgrades. No HP up, no beans, none of that. Maybe no badge effects if you feel like it.

I know this was released a few days ago, but I would call this a success tbh Scripted events can't really be considered as truly "dodging" since they devs didn't give you any other option. If anything, that fight was more of a mini-game than a fight with actual dodging involved
