I know a lot of people don’t like physics but in a force equation, velocity has more force than mass. A smaller object moving faster can do more force, just in a smaller area. Which is another thing, the smaller it is, the more compressed the force is on the impact point rather than being spread around in a bigger area.

You could actually make an X-bow that auto reloads and they did perhaps exist. It is called the Polybolos, it is a very old Greek weapon I believe, and it is literally the Gatling gun of its day (again, I don't think it has ever been confirmed that they exist). It is a large crossbow with a box that holds multiple bolts or arrows and the operator turns a crank to reload and fire. The crank wheel will turn a chain that hooks onto the bowstring and pull it back, and as the string is pulled back it will catch an arrow from the box and pull it out. After a certain point, the chain's means of holding the bowstring will slide out of the way and the bowstring will send the arrow or bolt in front of it flying. The faster you turn that crank handle, the faster you fire so long as your loader can keep up...assuming that they actually did exist.

Same elastic principle. Catapults are also either slingshots or mangonels, so the terms are all a bit hazy. Anyway, this is really a scorpion, which is a smaller ballista.

The physics is the same concept, if he shot a bolt, it's a crossbow. If he shoots a pellet its a slingshot, if it's shooting arrows, its a bow. No matter what type of stringing, elasticity of the materials of the string and the armature are what create the force....
