Sia achieves that sound by having super human breath control. She's riding the very minimum amount of air required to create vibration in the larynx, and doing it on the top of the pressure curve of a diaphram vibrato. That skill ontop of her obvious singing abilities and musical talent puts her in another dimension. I'm glad she didn't let the pressures of show business win in the end and found balance in her life. Thank god her state of balance allows us to hear her as well.

Sia's vocal embellishment in this song is tremolo (amplitude modulation) rather than the usual vibrato (pitch modulation).

Just as a little background to this song. Sia was touring in Thailand when she received a phone call that her boyfriend had been killed in a freak accident when he was getting out of a London taxi. Apparently, he was drunk and somehow got hit with the door as the cab pulled away, severing his brain stem. Sia didn't cope with the loss too well and went on a bender. She was later reported as saying, "Lots of people go on a bender when they lose somebody they love. My bender lasted 5 years" This song is about her struggle with depression and her thoughts on suiciding. I saw an interview where she talked about going to her dealer and saying "Give me two of everything, I'm gonna do it" Fortunately a friend called her and talked her into going into rehab and look where she is now.

Yes she's Australian, this was around the time she started getting noticed overseas and by 2010 she was on the verge of being huge, but the fame and being so in the spotlight didn't sit well with her, and for her own mental health she stepped away. For a few years she just wrote songs for other people, then in 2014 she released '1000 forms of fear', which kicked the doors wide open for her and shot her to the top, but she would only appear live if her face was covered, for her privacy issues.

Sia Kate Isobelle Furler born 18 December 1975 is an Australian singer, songwriter, voice actress, and director. She started her career as a singer in the acid jazz band Crisp in the mid-1990s in Adelaide. In 1997, when Crisp disbanded, she released her debut studio album, titled OnlySee, in Australia. She moved to London and provided vocals for the British duo Zero 7. Sia released her second studio album, Healing Is Difficult, in 2001, and her third, Colour the Small One, in 2004. Sia moved to New York City in 2005 and toured the United States. Her fourth and fifth studio albums, Some People Have Real Problems and We Are Born, were released in 2008 and 2010, respectively. Each was certified gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association and attracted wider notice than her earlier albums. Uncomfortable with her growing fame, Sia took a hiatus from performing and focused on songwriting for other artists, producing successful collaborations "Titanium" (with David Guetta), "Diamonds" (with Rihanna) and "Wild Ones" (with Flo Rida). Peace out.

Sia has a song with Hilltop Hoods called "I Love It" should check it out. Both Sia and Hilltop Hoods come from Adelaide, South Australia. Also, Sia has quite a few songs that were popular here in Australia before she made it big in the US with Titanium. Funny note, Sia wrote Titanium and did demo vocals expecting them to be re-sung by someone else and was surprised when her demos were used in the official release, she didn't want to be famous, thats why she wears the wigs.
