I went through a terrible 5 years of alcohol addiction. I lost my job, my girlfriend, and myself. When I finally decided to quit, I went through hallucinations and was put in a coma for a week. I cry every single time I hear this song. I was an alcoholic. For 2 years. My daughter was 3 and 4. She looks identical to me. I was a "functional alcholic." I got very sick. I almost died. I was rushed to ER..basically my nurse said, your little girl needs you. I said detox me. I have been sober 7 years and now have 2 more kids. I will never forgive myself for becoming an alcholic when my daughter needed her momma. This song and performance reminds me what I went through and how much I've changed and grown.

Ryan Heffington is a big part of the success too. The team Sia put together created some amazing movements. Like the finger pointing gesture at the very end, I suddenly sobbed. Maddie Ziegler is of course a brilliant dancer but Kristen Wiig being more clumsy also fits perfectly with the theme of the adult losing the effortless joy she knew as a kid; for a second she gets it back! And then viciously hisses it away. It’s so good. In hindsight, I think this is high art.

This is what separates Maddie from other dancers - She LIVES the dance. She feels it, she breathes it and she makes the audience feel something. This is the performance for me that represented the meaning of the song most. The one that helped me really get what it was about. Moreso even that the original video. The emotion Kristin puts into this is jaw dropping and it's heartbreaking at the end when she snarls at her child-self and sinks back into her addiction. I just watched it again for the first time in over a year and I have tears falling.
@Mitsywolfe4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. The video struck me as being about an adult, but we are reminded that we were all once precious children. This version makes the inner child vs adult reality theme more explicit. Then what sends it over the top is Maddie looping back to Sia and admonishing her, the gesture saying “you did this, you ruined us.” Crushing emotional impact!

@@Mitsywolfe we have different interpretations of the end… Where you see a girl waiting to admonish sia, I see someone tapping into their creativity. Basically, “I can’t get my adult self out of this funk, so let me indulge my creative side and write a song/sing about it” - Many psychologists hold their being a trinity to ourselves. Freud most famously, naming them ego, super ego and Id. Jung (I think) called them “adult, child, critical parent” I think this is a representation of all three interacting.

This is much more than pop music, this is art. It's really pushing the boundaries of what art can be, in a mixed medium. Even thought the music is very different, it reminds me of the sort of performances that David Bowie would put together. You can only really do this when you are an artist at heart, it can't be faked. And artists very often suffer quite a bit, with a variety of problems. I can feel or hear Sia's suffering in this performance, and I sympathise. What a wonderful way to fight back, to just create great art.

I just watched this video on mute at my desk at work after being reminded of it in passing conversation. It is incredible what the imagery depicts with the representation of the inner child conflicting with the current mental state of the main lead. Anyone who has struggled with addiction, depression or has just been mentally lost can painfully relate to the abandoned, desperate inner child that wants so desperately to console us, seeming almost wiser than the person we have become. It is truly amazing the assault we mentally - and sometimes physically - inflict on ourselves from past unhealed traumas. It's important to revisit these feelings, even after you have overcame your past obstacles, because sometimes it is nice to see how far you have come. Kristen Wiig and Maddie Ziegler shine as performance artists in this - bravo!

@@Rae0811 Thank you!! I still come back to this video and watch it every so often. Luckily, and thankfully, as you get older, the visits you make to your inner child in your mind are more filled with "look how you are going to benefit from what you went through" and less "I'm so sorry you had to go through that." It truly is a secret gift of aging no one talks about! ❤️ Blessings to all that come to watch video. You are all wonderfully unique and perfect!!!

For a long time, I glossed over Sia, the song, and this performance ever since "Chandelier" first hit the charts. At an AA mtg I used to attend, someone used these lyrics to speak about sobriety and recovery at a meeting (I wasn't present), and that finally compelled me to go look at them and then revisit this. Wiig's talents shouldn't surprise us; she made SNL great, Bridesmaids brilliant, and WW84 more bearable than it deserved to be. Ryan, Maddie, Sia, and Kristen working together to this synergistic moment of live, performed art, however--this is one for the ages. I'd pay for a HD version of it.
