I'm from Brașov, moved in Sibiu for the cultural activities, during summer the city is very active, there are a lot of events, from FITS, to Astra Film, Guitar Meeting, Focus in the park, ArtMania, Sibiu, But if there are no events wich I doubt, you can visit Dumbrava with the Astra Museum, or the Holly Trinity Orthodox Cathedral, the steam engine museum, the museum of hunting, the thick tower philarmonica, go on Gusterita hill, and more. And at the end of the day party in oldies pub, or drink something with the strangers at geea caffe.

Feeric Fashion show, in August the gilded masters stop here for a month, showcasing their centuries old crafts. And so on. I mean, they sounded quite ignorant. The man really said the city has "nothing to offer culture wise". What about Brukenthal museum? Founded around 1820, same as the Louvre? With works from Jan van Eyck and Brueghel? It has 300.000 visitors a year. People must visit it for a reason. Then the Museum of the history of Pharmacy, residing in a building from 1564. The Evangelical Cathedral dates from the 14th century and has a huge mural from 1445 called The Crucifixion. Every Thursday, a concert takes place there at the largest pipe organ in the south-east of Europe. one wonders if they even knew there were actual museums in the city lol It's okay to shit on a city, but only as long as you can back that up with solid proof.

Sibiu is so full of tourists that the locals are not so interested anymore in meeting foreigners, like they were some years ago. Back in the years after the Revolution the remaining Saxons literally jumped on any visitor from Germany or Austria and the young Romanians were very eager to practice their English or Italian skills. Back than the tourists were also more interested in the local culture, a trip to Romania was a long and complicated journey and the people read books or travel guides before they went. But today with low cost flights directly from Spain, Italy, Germany, France, the UK, etc. a lot of people come unprepared and it is just tireing to tell the same stories over and over again. Yes, Transilvania is a real country and not some fantasy land out of fairy tales. No, Dracula was not a Transilvanian. No, there are no vampires here. Yes, Transilvania has always been multiethnic and multilingual and it is no big deal to speak Romanian, German and Hungarian in one city. No, the Saxons don't come from Saxony. No, the Hungarians don't come from Hungary. Yes, gypsies are a real people and also not from fairy tales. Yes, Transilvania is also multi-confessional and all those churches belong to different denominations. No, Transilvania has no capital. For hundreds of years we had a Diet (a parliament of estates) that met in a different place each year. So, no capital, but several equally important cities. If you ask the tourist guide: is it true that the brother of Vlad Țepeș was gay and is buried in the Saxon cathedral ... his eyes will light up and he will tell endless historic anecdotes. If you ask the same guy: why is everything written in German here - he will sigh and silently think "not again". That applies not only to foreign tourists but also to visitors from Bucharest. Be a bit more interested!

We’ve found the local Romanians to be very friendly and welcoming during our time here. We spent 3 months here this spring and liked it so much that we are back for another three months to experience fall. Transylvania or Siebenbürgen was not a country, but a region that became a principality. It is Vlad’s son Mihnea cel Rău that is buried in the Saxon Cathedral not his brother. He is the only non Saxon buried on the grounds there.

Next time do some research before you put such a title. PS: 10 min drive outside the city there are at least 10 - 15 awesome locations you can visit.

Going up with a camper on roads like Transfagarasan and Transalpina proves from the start how little you have learned about the country, roads and customs in all the years since you (claim) have been a guest here. To go to a city for the first time, not to leave the most popular, strictly touristic areas for a minute and then to put labels (indifferent, positive or negative) denotes superficiality. To say the least. The rest, I suppose, depends on expectations, what kind of "fun" you're looking for and the level of education. You can thank each other. For nothing. At over 2000 meters altitude, seeing other people on the mountain? "- Whoa! There are people up there." In the middle of the day, in the city, you are surprised that some are still working and not swarming in Piata Mare? Epic! (by the way; you are one letter away from a word that is protected by copyright: "Romaniacs". Annual event, known worldwide: but not by you, apparently)

@@romaniac This dude just needs to lighten up a bit. You guys are young and probably more accustomed to university cities, rather than cities that are more cultural-focused. Sibiu has great architecture, great surroundings, and great cultural activities, and for this reason it is probably a better fit for families and older people. The "vibe" and nightlife do get lively when the city fills up during the summer festivals and even the Christmas fair, but outside of those, the general atmosphere doesn't come close to București, Cluj or Timișoara. Also I think the camper is a wonderful way to visit Romania, really makes it feel like an adventure.

To add a bit of context, I'm from Alba, I went to Uni in Sibiu, lived there for 13 years, then I've been getting sloshed in Blighty for the past 7 and a half years. Cheltenham, Glos to be more precise. Nevermind the haters who take your opinion as an offense or try to rubbish your work. Also nevermind the moronic statements that Sibiu is a cheap copy of Brașov. Sibiul is an older Saxon resettlement than Brașov, so if any is a copy, that's Brașov. Personally I love them both, but for different reasons, not the architecture similarities. I won't mention the cultural season as others already have. Out of season it may look like a ghost town as 2007 is both the best and the worst thing that happened to Sibiu. It received a ton of investment due to being selected the European Cultural Capital, but that turned it into a tourist trap which made the old city unaffordable for quite a few locals. I know people who run B&Bs who keep them shut for 2-3 months as they won't bother with low traffic, but then make an obscene amount during the tourist season. It's also a different pace of life, so much so that București may look loud an obnoxious. Albeit, even that's a matter of perspective. I went from Sibiu to visit London and everyone seemed so slow. After 3 years in Cheltenham, I went to visit London and everyone looked rude and in a hurry. Unfortunately, in the off season, without local knowledge and visiting during the week, it may look like there's nothing to do. Like going to an amazing restaurant, for they are plenty. Or museums. To appreciate the place, you need to either live year round or visit at the right time for the activities that you're aiming for. Does this look like the same place you visited? www.google.com/search?q=Sibiu+Christmas+Market www.google.com/search?q=Sibiu+FITS www.google.com/search?q=Sibiu+Cibin+Fest Not so lacking vibe, is it?
@SaltwaterC2 жыл бұрын
To add a couple more bits: when you entered Sibiu, it looks a bit like București because that shopping area is newly built. Do you know what was there 20 years ago? Absolutely sod all. A big empty field. Also, back when I was a student, the local state university had like 20k students. While some of them were local, the city population uses to swell after the 1st of October.

I've been to Sibiu twice and it was overly busy both times. But I think I was there during the theatre festival (one of the biggest in Europe). It could very well be that the city is a little depopulated. That's a sad trend all over Romania (except the three big economical hubs: București, Timișoara and Cluj). I still think it's a beautiful little city; worth visiting..

False. The city is not depopulated. The population spiked from 146,000 in 2011 to 169,000 in 2019 (population by domicile). The city's population is actually rapidly on the rise. They walked around the historic city center on a week day at noon or early afternoon. After work, people don't flock to the city center for a glass of wine on a terrace, they mostly go straight home and would rather go out mostly on the weekend.
