I think about this often-what crimes are considered beyond rehabilitation? Should there be softer consequences for petty crimes such as the ability to continue to vote? What crimes/actions are beyond forgiveness and worthy of stripping your rights away? It’s interesting to think about and I definitely agree that criminals are considered less than human and society seems to believe that they don’t deserve basic rights.

I’m with monet with the tier list idea. Murderers and rapists in my opinion do not deserve any rights as they have already taken someone else’s rights away first.

Thank you so much for this pod. 💕 this is such an important discussion and it makes me so sad that you both have had so many family members go to prison. Honestly, petty crimes are likely the result of lack of opportunity for people, and if people had access to work that was satisfying as well as providing a good wage that pays the bills, that would help reduce the number of people in prison. I love that Bob says prison is for rehabilitation NOT punishment. I wish this is how the majority of people viewed prison. This is an elevated perspective and one that needs to be taught to people who do not understand the concept. Bob for president!!!!! 🤩🤩🤩

Prison should definitely be a punishment- like only being able to use a public & supervised phone still allows you to call relatives/friends but NO, prison should not be FUN. Being off your phone isn't torture it's just a frustrating inconvenience, agreed with Monet 💯. & Bob, you're right, if you're a citizen you should be able to vote no matter where you are whether you're in prison or out of country.

14:57 I also believe that prison should be a place where prisoners are rehabilitated to not reoffend when they join back into society. We have a lack of resources and staff in prisons to be able to truly address all the needs of the prisoners. My issue with violent offenders is that some of them are categorized as sociopaths who do not function well in society and spend their time in and out of the justice system. The term “high-functioning” sociopath is used to describe sociopaths who are especially skilled at giving the illusion of being what they believe others want to see in them. So they can get good at manipulating the system to get out earlier.

Thats why there are differences with Maximum Security Prison and Jail. Theres also a difference between Prison & Rehab! There are rehabs that work to rehabilitate. And there are prisons that punish people. I hear Bobs view, but then have those people go to a rehab. Plus, some people dont consent to rehab, being "fixed" some people dont wanna go to a rehab, or be fixed. Some people like how they are.

I can only speak from a South African perspective, but I disagree with Bob that custodial sentences aren't/shouldn't be about punishing the person. Any sentence should have the following elements: deterrence, incapacitation, rehabilitation, retribution, and restitution. So punishment is a part of it, but not the only part. Further to this, I don't believe not having a phone is torture or anything close to unreasonable. Its prison after all. With regard to Charlize, her surname is definitely pronounced "Trôn" in South Africa, but it is easier on the American ear to say it as she tends to now, which is "Thur-on".

Not Bob not understanding the justice system (and in this case I mean they think that crime should pay/shouldn't be punished. Imagine, letting people who cant even act right in society ie: murders, rapists, war criminals all having a say in how we should be acting as a society). The reason we dont let them vote is because they couldn't act right before jail, why would we reward them for it? And yes, prison is supposed to be a punishment cause they couldn't act right on their own, so they need this deterrent. The adult version of time out servers 2 purposes. 1: Removing that danger to the rest of us and 2: Time to reflect on what they did. That 2nd part IS the rehab, they get 3 hots n a cot with flushing toilets, TV, and visits. Things alot of homeless queer kids don't have (just to give a personal experience of being in said situation). Personally I think the death pen should be used for more specific crimes, like if you fuck, molest, even touch a child in any sexual way that's it. Should we be releasing those on trumped up weed charges? Yah, like 3 decades ago, that part of the justice system is not justice. for the rest of this, no those people dont get a say in how we get to act, they couldn't be trusted to do it on they own in the 1st place. Imagine a family having to watch the killer/raspiest/criminal getting to do all the things that the victim will NEVER get too? Why would we reward that with rehab? Why do they get a 2nd chance at life after taking that right from someone else? Crime shouldn't pay, full stop.

The still being able to vote whilst in prison is a GREAT topic, a great thinking piece. Because there's soo many ways both sides will have good points. Because I truly believe even in Prison, especially of you're getting out of Prison in a couple of years then yeah WHY shouldn't you be able to vote cause you sold a bit of weed or coke.. it don't make sense as the results of the votes still affect you when you leave prison.

They will never allow prisoners to have cell phones because they record all your conversations. when you call anybody on any of those phones that they provide to you in prison, it’s all recorded. some people get tablets some prisons give out tablets those are monitored as well .they want you to pay for it too! don’t think making phone calls is for free. You need to put money on your phone account in order to even make phone calls or you need to get a calling card from your commissary or your canteen. When you order your stuff you can order a calling card it’s a business as well for them. By the way, those crazy wheat sentences you can think Kamala Harris she put away a lot of people for weed for selling weed for possessing weed and they are still till this day serving those sentences we’re talking about like a 50 year sentence more than little less than that. these are the sentences people are facing because of her. Biden is also one of those people you can thank for this. This is something that you can find if you do your research nobody wants to do their research they just wanna follow but think for yourself. Bro republicans didn’t do anything they are wanting prison reform. Trump had been working towards allowing us felons to vote and have guns. I love you Monet but you can’t even articulate how “republicans” did some sneaky shit. Cmon dog.
