hey yall i'm from brazil and I just wanted to say Monet was right about the South America thing. we usually don't call ouserlves americans just cause we call ourselves by the name of the country (brazilian, peruvian, argentine) sooo it's weird when someone says "i'm american" cause we're americans too. Yes! Fellow South American here! Thanks Monet for bringing the knowledge. In Spanish we have the word “estadounidense” for “USAmerican” but even that is flawed because Mexico has official states as well and known officially as a country as the “Mexican United States” aka “Estados Unidos Mexicanos”.

There's always a confusion because USA means *United States of America* , so even though we aren't taught that way here in Brazil, the country's name is technically America So it isn't incorrect for them to call themselves "Americans", they're not talking about America as a continent, but as the country's name, US of *A*. It's like "the Democratic Republic of Congo", you could basically just say the country's name is just Congo, and that's the logic they apply when they refer to their country as just America.

The things you guys are saying about continents is not entirely true and its only appearances and it hides a lot of racism and ignorance. African countries are SO different. So many different religions, tribes with particular traditions, languages, holidays, etc. Asia and Africa are the most diverse continent to exist, they have the most diverse ethnic composition which comes with cultural diversity but there is this erasure and will to homogenize or dilute the richness and difference in these ppl. There is no african that considers that all of africa is the same. Its just an american/western point of view.

Hey, French here and that's actually very unique to the UK where south asians have been part of British society for a long time, and with a multicultural integration. Even in Europe and in France for instance, someone speaking of "asians" will usually be referring to East & Southeast Asia, and will often use ignorant/vague terms like "Indians" to refer to a south asian person.
