A modern masterpiece. Joker telling different versions of the origins of his scars is actually a reference to the story The Killing Joke. In it, Joker provides a very tragic explanation for how he became a psychotic murderous clown. But then he recants the story, claiming that he doesn't quite remember if the story was true at all, instead saying "If I were to have an origin story, I prefer it to be multiple choice." Heath Ledger's Joker reflects that notion that the character is so unreliable that he cannot be trusted to tell the truth about himself.

The Joker once said in a comic when refering to his personal history: "If I have to have an origin, I'd prefer it be multiple choice." Thats the mystery of the Joker. You never know what's the truth and what isn't.

In the source material they typically explore Harvey's Psychosis more with his personality disorder but I think the hints in this were enough. From the start we saw him use the coin to dictate and or control the outcome of every scenario. It hints at that compulsion, his dedication to law and order to the point that the cops in his own office called him Harvey Two Face. So it wasn't overt but very subtle hints that he wasn't exactly the most stable. Adding to that the theme of madness only being one push away, it doesn't require a lot for some ppl to lose their sanity. Adding to that, Harvey didn't know the plan Batman and Gordon had to trick Joker. They hid that from him, something he brought up at the start of the film saying he wanted their trust. So there's reason enough for him to want to blame them.

Rachel is an original character for the films. She was created for Batman Begins when they realized they couldn't do Harvey Dent justice as a character in the film, they couldn't flesh him out enough, and they needed a love interest for Batman. She was replaced because because Katie wanted to make a heist movie based on a true story called Mad Money - stupid rumors stated that Tom Cruise pressured her because he didn't wanna compete for a bigger career. They couldn't just replace the character all together because it was a driving force behind a lot of motivations in The Dark Knight, playing a major role, and having a huge impact.
@lockekappa5005 ай бұрын
Yeah I dunno, I don't think recasts are that big of a deal. For me it's easy to just accept that this is the same character. It's a character, not an actor. And unless they give a completely different performance, or are vital to the plot and deviate from the past performance, it's never a big deal for me.
@ronmaximilian69535 ай бұрын
Harvey Dent didnt just randomly become Two-Face. We saw his fall and the end of the movie previewed with dent saying "You either die a hero or you live long enough to become the villain." We saw him breaking rules and being exceedingly narcissistic throughout the movie. His campaign slogan was "I believe in Harvey Dent," not something normal like "I'll clean up Gotham." Yes he's doing it for justice but you also see his desire to take risk and be the hero. When Gordon is shot, he kidnaps one of the shooters and tortures him. When Batman stops him, Dent screams "You can't give in " When he is rescued by the Batman , dent is angry that he's the one being rescued rather than Rachel. He is unwilling to live without her. And then she's killed and he is severely burned. He's lost a part of his soul, a part of his body, and is in excruciating pain. All that is left is revenge. Personally, I think this could have been drawn out a little bit more. Then again, many, if not most of the people watching the movie already knew that Harvey tent was Two-Face from the animated TV show where he was invented, the comic books, or the horrible movies from the 1990s.

My favourite is Batman Forever and The Crow and Captain America 1, though I highly rate Watchmen and The Dark Knight, technically speaking. I also love Iron Man, LX, among others. The Dark Knight Rises, and Batman Begins are also great pieces of storytelling and cinema, though not as tight or well-acted. I think The Dark Knight is one of the best films ever made, period. My only problem is the IMAX aspect shifts in the Blu-ray disc, along with dynamic sound issues (lows too low, highs too high). I'd rather take a high-quality DVD transfer, for general viewing, anyway. I'm actually making my own Wayne Manor in Minecraft right now, inspired by Batman Forever, A Death in the Family comic, and The Dark Knight. It's a stern piece of Stripped Classicism, one storey tall, but large (130 by 90 metres), and built just for Batman and Alfred (I figure that in the future, Batman gets a new Robin, and he takes the drawing room as his bedroom, haha). If you're interested, just reply to this comment: I'll send you a picture of the Manor when I've completed it.

@@lockekappa500 I love superhero movies in general, but I agree most are bad. Since I mostly care about storytelling and fun style, I don't care much if it's bad, as long as it has a heart and is fun. Sadly, many fail here, too. Same is true for all movies, not just superhero. If it ends well and has strong archetypes/symbolism, I'm fine. But I still agree with you, for sure.

Harvey Dent was two face all the time, if you even see his office, his legal books are all lined up and the other books are all messed up, he has a very palpable duality, even though he was not going to kill the unstable guy, the way he threatened him is actually of a certain type of psycosis, that's why he even asks gordon what was his nick name, two face. Two Face is a legendary Villain in Batman uniuverse and this makes for a more harsh and painful origin story than it's original, it's just a little push that breaks him.
@lockekappa5005 ай бұрын
Yeah I think the point with Harvey is that he was "sane" as long as the portion of his life existed in the manner in which he wanted it to exist. But take that away, and his whole world falls apart. I think a lot of us are more similar to Two Face than we think. If all of the things that we held value in were gone in an instant, what kind of person would we be anymore?
@legendinthemaking98614 ай бұрын
One the one hand, not immediately seeing the signs of how Harvey could turn bad is why the Joker won; he "took the best of us, and brought him down to our level". And on the other hand, his interaction with the henchman after Gordon got shot, the one he held captive and threatened to kill, also foreshadows what he's willing to do. The only thing keeping him in line was the two-headed coin ("him making his own luck"), which represents the optimism of a good person, but when Rachel gets killed, the coin gets burned on the other half, representing that circumstances greater than you have their own plans and that you don't necessarily get to "make your own luck". This demoralizes him, kills the optimism he had as this "good person/white knight", corrupting him in the process. In the end, by loosing his optimism, he becomes pessimistic, wishing to have everyone else endure the cruel luck of life that he's endured , with his new burned coin.

I'm not sure what was so hard to understand what drove Harvey mad...when a man loses everything, especially someone or something he loves deeply and passionately, it will drive him to either despair or madness. Usually, the passion will be just as bad as it was good. Rachel was what he loved most in the world. She gave him the strength to continue to do the right thing. When she died, his joy and love was crushed.

"He [Two Face] lost it. He didnt give any signs." Maybe you're smart at figuring out story lines, but not so great at reading people. You think punching a witness in court and pulling a gun on a handcuffed man in a stolen ambulance is normal? You just missed it. Maybe you cant admit it. Harvey has been demonstrating unhinged behavior in every scene: 1.Attacked by a gun at the court room.....PUNCHES the witness. What kind of DA public official punches witnesses 2.Dinner with Bruce "When the Romans saw an enemy at the gate, they suspended democracy...." SUSPENDED DEMOCRACY?! 3.He ABDUCTS a shooter who shot at the mayor, by STEALING an ambulance, takes him to deserted location under a bridge, puts a gun to his head to TORTURE him for information. 4.When Batman becomes the "voice of reason," and offers to turn himself him (the LEGAL and rational thing to do)....what does Dent do? "YOU CANT GIVE IN!" He flies into a rage at Batman's SANE solution. 5.The nurses say he REFUSES pain killers for his BURN wounds. WHat kind of person WANTS burn pain? That's not a normal response.

The thing with Harvey Dent is , I guess there isn't much details needed to give to prove he was close to insanity. It is not of question of whether Harvey was insane or not it was about Whether deep down he was really a good guy or not. Joker says in the interrogation scene " People are good as long as they want to be. "" When chips are down these civilized people would eat each other " Joker was taking about Harvey in particular. Joker consider only Batman upto his standards and rest as hypocrites, including Harvey . The rest of the movie Joker is proving that their white knight , Harvey Dent , is a fake coin. So what we understand is it was a wrong call from Batman to see Harvey Dent as the Beacon of Justice( Man of proper law and Justice instead of vigilantism), because Batman was too busy to hang up his cape without putting Harvey into the test . Joker had to be there to prove him wrong.

I have always thought it interesting to compare and contrast Batman with Iron Man, as they have very similar premises in both comic universes. It really highlights the mythopoetic aspect of DC over the very grounded, humanist, almost sci-fi paradigm of Marvel. Why does Batman always win? Because he's Batman. Why does Iron Man always win? He doesn't.
