The reason why she gave the crown to an incompetent commander is because she was in love with him. This resulted in a disaster for the Crusades. That narrative does not go well with Hollywood, because according to Hollywood the power of love is so strong it could deflect bullets and nukes.

4:16 - There was good reason for that. She was having an affair with the Patriarch of Jerusalem at the time. As much as she may have supported Guy's claim, the marriage couldn't have been going that well. The Templars naturally supported her, since they had also supported her husband. The Hospitallers did not support Guy, however, and many stories tell that their Grand Master meant to delay the coronation by taking the crown jewels and throwing them from tower where they were kept. This did little good, because in one of history's great ironies, the Grand Master of the Knights Templar happened to be walking by at that very moment, caught the box containing the crown, and Guy's coronation was held on time.

roses00000 He was one of the few suitable choices for a consort. The laws of Jerusalem allowed a woman to rule, but she was required to marry. And love? Seriously, do you actually think this was even a consideration for a royal marriage? Neither of them were that naive.

Nicely done. The only thing I would question would be referring to Humphrey of Toron as highly capable. This doesn't fit with the fact that he later had to submit to a forced divorce in order to make way for Conrad. I don't think you also mentioned that Sibylla had two daughters by Guy who also perished in the camp outside of Acre, which was not a healthy environment. It always struck me as a bit odd that they were brought along to the siege, anyway, but there were probably few places where they could have gone.

I visited the castle of Limassol some years ago and they had suits of armour from the Lusignan period. They were surprisingly small - approx 5'5" tall.
@RealCrusadesHistory10 жыл бұрын
In the twelfth century people were about as tall as they are now. At the end of the thirteenth century they started to get shorter. By the 14th, 15th century they were pretty short. The armor you saw was probably from the Late Middle Ages, not the period when Sibylla lived.

***** Not quite, more to do with sunlight. Late Medieval, the earth experienced near two centuries of small ice age. Some writers from that period exaggerated, saying Europe only receive 4 to 5 hours of sunlight per day. Sunlight and its vitamin D is very essential for bone growth. For youths, it will decide their heights of adulthood.
@adelaidebiker60839 жыл бұрын
+TheRousler Adding 2 cents to the best YT station - IMAO I believe that the small sized armour is in the realm of those 'small clothes that don't fit anyone' and remain forever in a cheap bin. I can only guess the incredible cost of these things and doubt they were made just for display. Perhaps a prince grew too fast or died etc.. Quite simply, these items can only exist in good condition today because they were never used. Tall, short, nutrition etc are convenient commentaries which overlook a simple fact that something was made but not used, and while we benefit by seeing the technology, the reality is probably very simple.

@@cittiavaticano That’s a good question. I mean, I’m partial to the current King of Spain, so I’m not a good person to ask that question to. I want him to claim the title of King of the Goths (I’m super Gothic) because the king of Sweden abandoned that title in 1976. And as a successor to Pelagio I think Felipe VI has a valid claim to that title. Hahaha. But Jerusalem is a place, so without an actual monarchy there it seems like an empty title, no?

I related to your early quotation of how the movie "Kingdom of Heaven", greatly altered history. So much so as to offer tremendous insult. I have my degree in history and am both a Hospitaller (Order of St. John) and a Templar. Each has it's secrets as do many. The extent in which The Knights Templar were vilified is astounding. Princess Sibylla's brother Baldwin IV owed the successful defense of his very kingdom to The Templar's, with a bold counter stroke made by he and a vastly smaller force at Montgisard 25 November 1177. The movie in essence blames the fall on the Knights Templar. An insult of the greatest magnitude.
@Thor-Orion10 ай бұрын
I actually got up and walked out of the movie during the scene when they hang the Templars within the city of Jerusalem. I half-yelled “EXCOMMUNICATION!” Stood up and walked out. Movie is ridiculously inaccurate. It didn’t just insult Crusaders, it insulted my intelligence.

I hate it when history gets distorted by Hollyweird. Braveheart, Kingdom of Heaven and lots of the older so-called Bible movies. These movies misinform the young and those who know nothing of history or the Bible. I think the script writers should stick to Scripture and known history. What could be a better story than what actually took place?

So while completely, grossly inaccurate it got me to learn about the real crusades.

In order to be commercially-viable, movies must have certain plot lines and character arcs. It's fine for movies to take artistic license; the issue that people should be better educated in SCHOOL and not by film, and they should also be told that movies are usually historically inaccurate.
@shooterdownunder4 жыл бұрын
To be fair with Braveheart the producers did try to find information about William Wallace and came up empty. It was only after the movie was released that the historians came out investigate the history with with all the resources at their disposal.
