I love the subtle brutality of this movie, the characters are very calculated and they never fly off the handle. I dont even recall them ever really raising there voice outside of a firm tone. Very refreshing take, you dont have to be a wild screamer to be brutal.
@vindigga62 жыл бұрын
Like even when the drug cartels family is killed theres no screaming. Usually, youd probably hear the wife scream out in terror. I wonder if this was a conscious thing the director was going for. Like he wanted gross acts of violence, but done in a cold convincing, efficient way? Bravo.

Great film. Alejandro (Benecio del Toro) was one of the most fascinating characters I have seen in a long time. In the beginning of the film, he came across as a loner, a cowboy (the scene where he is standing outside the private jet, looking on into the distance). Kate sees Alejandro taking a nap and he jumps in his seat (flashback)-so now we see he is suffering from some serious PTSD-at the end of the film we discover why (his wife and daughter were killed by the cartel). In that meeting with the Marshals and the Deltas before they pick up the prisoner: Alejandro looks like he is not even listening to the man speaking: he is distracted, thinking about something else. As we can see at the end of the film, Alejandro has one objective in mind: killing the cartel boss and his family. The intriguing thing about Alejandro is that he used to be a lawyer; he was trying to use the legal system in Mexico to prosecute the cartel. When his wife and daughter were killed, he changed tactics: he became a hired killer, a hitman, a sicario. Alejandro was lethal and efficient with his sidearm; his skill was surgical; he was emotionless, passionless-he had ice in his veins. Alejandro was brutal, blunt (especially to Emily Blunt) and decisive. He was a wolf in the land of wolves. Alejandro: “Nothing will make sense to your American ears. . . But in the end, you will understand.”

Alejandro savoured that moment. That moment when the wife knew they were going to die, that her boys would die. Fausto knew he would die but he didn't want Alejandro to kill him in front of his sons. Alejandro waited a moment so Fausto would think he was going to kill him somewhere else, but his wish was granted. He would not be killed in front of his family because they were going to die first. Alejandro let it sink into Fausto's mind for a moment. All the power he had amassed, all the wealth, all the deaths he had ordered, none of that was going to mean anything in the end and that it had cost him everything.

The shitty state of the United States leaves too many people wanting drugs and shit. The war on drugs that has been directed towards the victims of drug abuse has been devastating, and only just gives these cartels more power and get them more armed and violent.
@woofna19484 жыл бұрын
@@EscapedConvict2007 Yeah, sure. Just like we "won" the war on prohibition. When a product like "drugs" is illegal and the demand for it is high, with billions of dollars to be made supplying it, history shows that, without question, organized crime will step in and provide the service. Jail the little guys? Plenty more are waiting to fill their shoes. Cut the head off the snake? Plenty more are waiting for the chance to replace that snake. Make death the punishment for drug dealing? They tried that with pickpockets in Merry Olde England, and pickpockets did their best hauls at hangings. So you're 100% wrong about "winning" that war, EscapedConvice2007. It's unwinnable. The only thing that stopped the carnage that resulted from Prohibition was legalizing alcohol consumption.

6:15 - Too many examples of how cleverly the director uses music and sound to jar the audience. We see them leave the vehicle and the sound of a helicopter overhead tricks us into thinking it was gunfire. Also, the way the music pulses and then picks up speed/volume warns of something major in the plot or scene. I have seen very few movies that used background music and sound together to make the scenes so spooky.

i feel like the producers felt like the audience wouldnt necesarily trust the audience to connect with the morally ambiguous characters that displayed the harsh brutality of the war on drugs so they used Emily Blunt's character to provide a POV for the audience. As she learns and experiences new info in the movie, the audience tends to as well and begins to learn, just like her, that the reality of good guys always following the rules isnt true. additionally, they needed her role in the FBI because the CIA is restricted from operating in the US unless they are working with a domestic agency like the FBI or a certain foreign recruit is within the US that they need.
