Three things really sell this scene - 1) restraint. They mirror engagement patterns. Anything less would have gotten them killed because they would exposed themselves first. 2) Trigger discipline. Double taps only. Full auto and burst mode is for amateurs. 3) Collapsing back. They had to make an adjustment mid mission but got back on task as soon as the adjustment was complete. This shows not just situational awareness but mission awareness at all times.

Spielberg, Eastwood, Cameron, Ridley Scott all of them have a wide variety of clichés in their repertoire. Even Quarantino has some.The question is not whether or not a film has clichés, but how the director uses them cinematically to make a masterpiece. Avatar has a lot of them, but you can enjoy it as a good blockbuster with no great expectations for. Same about Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, No Country for Old Men (that stereotype of a grumpy ex-military man guarding the border was funny) and so on.

Being Mexican, I can only imagine the nightmarish logistics of filming in Mexico, displaying that kind of setup people must have thought something big was happening, and I am not sure if they filmed in the border crossing area, but that alone must have been a logistical and diplomatic nightmare if it was done on location. If not, I am still amazed at the level of tension the director created for the audience.

Also for Kate ,since she didn't have the complete POV as the other agents, it looked like they just went up to 2 cars and shot it up without seeing the hostile intent that each passenger showed that allowed the agents to fire first and take em all out. To her it was like a murder/cowboy shit but it was by the book.

It's happening, but thanks to the strikes, we lost roughly 2 years from completion. From Movieweb, Dec 8th 2023: "Sicario 3 is produced by Black Label Media and, while there is yet to be a date confirmed for the start of production, it can be assumed that with the script in its final stages of development, Sicario 3 will be ready for filming at some point in 2024."

I love how this movie constantly gaslights the audienc. When I watched this scene first I wasnt sure if they were just paranoid or if the danger was real. The way the show hints of a gun first are shot so well, because if you dont pay close attention you could think, that they maybe mistake something innocent for a gun until the reveal of the danger beeing real.

And the team made sure she's in a position that she has no choice but to do things that go their way as planned. They don't want her to be "competent", they want her to be controlled.

This movie is slow and arduous, long and tense. I wasn’t sure what I thought about it while watching it but in the end I thought “Man, that was very well done.” Sicario II: Day of the Soldado is just as good. Benicio del Toro was perfectly cast for his part.
