The whole scene with the random cowboy bar and that guy were never followed up on in any way, a lot of cool scenes but it did honestly come to a litteral "crawl" at times. and the fact the climax had nothing to do with the main character was weird to me. 7/10

The switch of pov from Emily to Benicio is a master stroke. It sums up that the story was NEVER about her, she just made it possible by legitimizing the operation. It was always about Benicio's character the clue is in the title "Sicario" not "FBI tag along Lady." I enjoy this guys reviews but how did he miss that one? Star Wars actually follows R2D2 but it's not about him it's about Luke. Pay attention.

For me, the movie almost felt like a nightmare. It's extremely tense and the danger felt very real. Having Emily Blunt's character go through the movie confused and helpless amplified those feelings for the audience.

It was a nice realistic take on the height of the War on Drugs in Juarez in around 2010-2011. Most of my military friends were impressed on the amount of detail that went into depicting tactics, use of firearms and even how everyone communicated with each other before and during missions and firefights. I will say Emily Blunts character annoyed me a little. I get she wasn't about fighting dirty but she should of understood that these guys weren't going to play fair or by the book. I did like the reveal at the end about Alejandro and that being said Del Toro was amazing.

It's so jarring when Jeremy brings outside objects on to the camera (i.e letters, Star Wars curtains, Gipsy and Danger, etc.). You get so used to just seeing a well-dressed man in front of a red or blue background with the ocasional picture that you forget "oh yeah, there is actually a physical world outside of this review space." That, ladies and gentlemen, is called *IMMERSION*. Or maybe it's just my ever-slipping grasp upon reality. Probably the latter.

I can't believe how anyone could've been bored watching this movie. I've probably watched it about 7 times now & I'll never be able to replicate how I felt the first time I watched it but I still love it after repeat viewings & that doesn't happen with a lot of movies, it could be because of the stellar cinematography or the brilliant pacing or that there's no scene out of place in the movie, every scene serves a purpose. There's a lot of ways to read into the movie but the POV shift to me clearly showed how absolutely nothing was in 'Kate's' control from the beginning, the ethics & morals went out the window as the movie went on & the minimal dialogue between Fausto & Alejandro, and Alejandro & Kate served such a perfect end to such a grim story. Not to mention the all around aspects of the movie, music, direction, acting, locations & something that is so basic to filmmaking, the 'climax', everything was stunning.

+jdg20042001 please don't say its basic I'm so sick of hearing that, the moral ambiguity of the film combined with Emily Blunt's inner moral conflict at the films climax offer wonderful depth and complexities to this already fascinating film. It may ostensibly seem basic, but the complex nature in which the characters are portrayed and the questions the film raises on the nature of the war on drugs are extremely thought provoking and far from basic.

i had the same issue with this movie as I did with inglorious basterds. Awesome movie, but it slowed down too much and another gunfight or 2 in the middle would have remedied. And i'm glad the final part shifted to Del Toro because I had enough of Emily Blunt. The whole movie is just her looking at everything happening around her being in way over her head. +Robert Brunner But I mean, Del Toro taking the podium in the last 30 minutes was kinda the point. Emily's character is only a scapegoat present for legal confirmation. Only by taking the left turn and doing something radical as hiring an assassin who is the real catalyst here, shit gets done. Nevertheless, with endlessly devastating moral implications. And the whole movie is about dancing on the line between what's morally justifiable in a "war". After all, Benicio is the title character. And man, if the tunnel scene alone didn't make up for all the "slower" scenes for you, I don't know what could have.

That was really good, so suspenseful. I loved it when Alejandro took down those guards and that cop towards the end without giving a single fuck, that was truly badass. Even when he killed the family, seeing the look of horror and sadness at the same time on the guy's face before imminent death was truly amazing, perfectly done. The main character kinda sucked tho tbh, I found her very annoying and had no place in that field. Most of the time I just wished she'd shut up and get on with it. I loved the ending, that even though it looked peaceful and playful, the gunshots reminded you that there is still violence going on. Such a good movie, 10/10

Comparing Sicario to Star Wars could not be more inaccurate. Sicario's Kate isn't supposed to be where she is, and doesn't belong, unlike Luke who is considered "the chosen one." We are Kate, unaware of how dark and disturbing the ride is going to be, acknowledging we shouldn't be here. She's essentially the pawn of the film, whereas Alejandro is revealed to be the big piece.

I really enjoyed Sicario, I'm not really the type to get nervous for characters in movies or be on the edge of my seat during tense scenes but this film really got my going. Like Jeremy said it executes tension and sets a mood very well and even the most "boring" parts of the film (like when *SPOILERS AHEAD* they were walking to the tunnel at night, and it was just consecutive shots of them all walking in the dark with night vision goggles on) the mood was kept up and I was anticipating something big because of the sound design, which was a big part of why I liked the film. The movie didn't really have that much of a soundtrack, mostly just low long winded booming horn sounds in tense sections or no music at all. The only time I thought of checking my watch was when *SPOILERS* emily's character went to the police department to try to investigate a bank account owned by the main bad guy, it dragged on way too long and could have been shorter or cut entirely. Overall I agree with Jeremy's review except the whole checking your watch thing, I give it 8.5/10 because there are a few things that could have been done better but is a great film none the less.

Your review exactly reflects my thoughts on Sicario. You can certainly praise it for its cinematography and acting. But my god, what a bore. From the beginning of the movie I knew Benicio Del Toro's character had a personal reason to be on this mission, that Josh Brolin's character was from the CIA and that he needed Emily Blunt to continue his mission. Aside from the action scenes this movie made me fall asleep.

Maybe I'm used to these type of slow paced movies, never seem to bore me.
@haloreachaor9 жыл бұрын
I have to agree, the movie was too slow. They had so many scenes where they'd be walking up a hill, or smoking for over a minute or two! You may not think that's a lot of time but when you're watching a movie and they keep the camera focused on people walking up a hill you get bored. Also you can argue it adds emotional effects to the movie but for me, it only added boredom. The movie was well directed and the message was very interesting, but I'd never watch it again to be honest...

+Penguin Publisher I disagree, it was not boring for me at all, I don't know why people are complaining about it being boring, just because its slow paced doesn't mean its boring.

The reason it shifts away from Emily Blunt is because it's not really her story. Things are out of her hands, she's slowly succumbs to the hopelessness of the situation and how powerless she is to stop the rampant abuse of the law she witnesses within the task force. It all comes to a head in the movie's very final scene.

+Dr. Larry Mitchell That's the point of Emily Blunt's character. She is thrown into something way over her head and is confused as to what her purpose is because she is always so used to doing everything "by the books" when that is obviously not being done by Josh Brolin and company.

I feel ya, Mr. Jahns. Some movies are just so well done, you can't help but praise them, yet somehow lack that extra something that makes you want to EVER see it again. How does that work? How can that be? Sometimes shit just be funny like that.
@saxbend9 жыл бұрын
Emily Blunt is brilliant and everything, but other than the focus for the audience what was the point of her character? They didn't need her for the mission. They just let her tag along. Whenever she did try to do her job they told her she wasn't helping.

Was kinda surprised you didn't mention the opening 20 or so minutes of the film... they were AMAZING!!!! I think that's what made the middle/end suffer a tiny bit, it felt like it could have been so much better. I liked the movie, but a little more advanced pacing here and there (and perhaps a tighter ending) would have made it a better film. Now, if I could just get Denis Villeneuve on the phone....

Story time Part of this movie was filmed at my office (or rather the outside parking structure) and I got to meet both Emily Blunt and the director Denis Villeneuve. Emily needed to use the bathroom but because the building is secure (government facility) they needed someone to escort her inside which they put on me. Yes, my only celebrity encounter involved showing them where the bathroom was.

I didn't feel the movie dragged at all, and I saw it twice. This movie gripped me like nothing else has this year. Even during quiet scenes of conversation I felt as things were going to go bad at any moment. The suspense was incredible. I enjoyed this more than I did 'The Martian', and that was a hell of a film!

[Spoilers] From the way I see it, the purpose for the switch of focus between Kate and Alejandro towards the ending (from the moment Matt tells the truth about Alejandro to Kate) was to reveal and clarify the whole purpose of the operation. To set up the moment of truth. So I guess Kate and Reggie wasn't just used in the film to give the CIA the ability to take action at the US borders but also (in a way) used by the audience, through Kate and Reggie's curiosity, to break the suspense of the film. I don't know if this was how the director intended but hey, it's just a guess :D P.S. sorry for some wrong choice of words, not really a good English speaker.

@Jeremy Jahns you're spot on with your review, throughout the movie you get this feeling of waiting for something to happen and it just doesn't take place. I agree that it was a good movie but like you said it's pretty much a one and done scenario, I also thought that it was odd to have Blunt be the focus for most of the film to then have her play second fiddle to Del Toro. I could tell from the beginning that this was going to be a movie that aimed for a message rather that having some kind of hero/happy ending outcome. The ending is just telling us "hey this is real life raw and uncut", what I take away from watching this is that it's aimed for the viewer to think and not so much about entertaining.

This movie was great, just go in thinking: Traffic pt 2 It wasn't slow or boring, it isn't an action flick.. I enjoyed the movie thoroughly, I'd say: Buy it on Blu Ray. Great acting, suspenseful & good plot. The only let down, imo? Is The woman, and how she walks around like she runs everything & being demanding, but they turn it around nicely. So even that, it's great.

I get your point about Blunt getting faced out by the end of the story, Jeremy. The thing is, and it's worth remembering: the 'Sicario' of the title... that's Del Toro's character. So, ultimately, it's really his story, not hers.
