I took this train lot of times! The intercity brand in Italy has a very good value and it's very comfortable with the excellent "old" Frecciabianca coaches forniture... I think is way better then the Frecciabianca service with old Pendolinos. Great video, as usual ;)

Another great railway station in Trieste (Austrian territory when it was built, as Venice didn't become independent until 1866).

Thanks for the great report. The refurbished 2nd class seats look great but I get your point on the extra width of 1st class seats. I have never taken an intercity in Italy so was great to see what it was like - most of my train trips have been on freccias or regios. Trieste station is very stately - can see why it reminded you of Milano Cenrale. I have a soft spot for Venezia Santa Lucia though - the simplicity of the brutalist design appeals to me. Also....one of my favourite rail experiences is exiting Santa Lucia to the vista of the Grand Canal! That never gets old.....

Great summary as usual! These are old coaches refurbished a couple fo years ago when the new livery was applied, replacing the ugly XMPR one. Intercity services are subsidized by each of the regions in Italy (such as Lombardy, Romagna, Toscana, etc) aiming to maintain connections for the smaller towns, usually left without service on Freccia's services. Special contracts are signed among the Region and Trenitalia for specific amounts of time and frequency.
@gerri_c2 жыл бұрын
Actually, Regions subsidize only Regionale and Regionale Veloce services while Intercity and Intercity Notte services are subsidized by the Government through a service contract signed between the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Economy on one side and Trenitalia on the other side. Apart from this, everything else is spot on, especially the fact that the XMPR livery was ugly! :)

Every now and then I travelled on InterCity services and even in those at night. This particular service between Trieste and Rome was diverted sporadically up until last year as they were working on the line between Bologna and Prato. In some occasions, InterCity services can even have lower prices than regional trains, as there are some offers that can be found, unfortunately only applicable to Cartafreccia holders (which I happen to be)

If you book to Santa Lucia then when you get off at Mestre, you can get on the next local train going there. There's like 8 an hour I believe.

Boy these are a world of difference from the miserable experience I had with friends on New Year's Day 1975 trying to take "The Rapido" from Rome to Milan and then later going on to a ski area called "Alpe de Mera" where there was hardly any snow except for one small slope. The Rapido was "inretardo" for over an hour forcing us to take an awful third class train to Milan which arrived much later and we didn't use the supplement Rapido tickets we had purchase one way North. On return my American friends weren't familiar with proper procedures for the Rapido which required us to have the return tickets stamped in the station and we still had the one way supplement fare tickets which the young conductor refused to accept insisting we buy more expensive SOUTH bound tickets which I adamently refused in my not very good Italian. Progressively higher Conductors arrived to argue with me in behalf of our small group. But I stood my ground despite demanding to see passports and taking down information. Finally after they left in a huff I suggested to the younger conductor that he come with me to the ticket office in the Rome station to reissue the tickets but he said he was leaving the train in Florence to which I replied in classic Italian "Well that's not MY PROBLEM"!! I can't recall if the return tickets were ever punched/ accepted. And at the Milan station we purchased a "Chustina delle Viago" excellent box lunch to take aboard. alpe

@@NonstopEurotrip Well, in my opinion, it's a short journey, but, it's scenic, even more with the journey to Venice's City Centre and its water channels which makes it different from any other city in the World, excepting some holiday's resorts. In fact, in Spain, we have a holiday resort called Empuriabrava, that is like Venice, but with beach 2nd residences for the people of Southern France (The zone that many Catalonians call "Catalunya Nord" (Northern Catalonia in English, Catalogne du Nord in French) and other zones of Southeastern France) It's near the city of Roses, in Northern Province of Girona, in Northern Catalonia, Spain
