The harmony is cool as well as the melodic choices it produces. That said, what makes Dan Wilson's playing pop--even for the theory illiterate listeners of the bunch--is his sense of pulse and RHYTHM. Same with 90% of the players we all dig. Get Wilson to talk about his rhythmic concept--developing a groove, seating his eighth notes, starting and ending phrases, rhythmic tension and release. Scales and harmony are the raw materials, but rhythm is the delivery on the dance floor. If we don't make our listeners dance in their seats, all else is lost. Dan Wilson is one funky guitar player.
