MY MOM HAD SICKLE CELL AND COOLEY’S ANEMIA! HER OLDER SISTER(MY AUNT) HAD ONLY SCD-NON -COOLEY’S ANEMIA. MY AUNT DIED FROM COMPLICATIONS DUE TO ACUTE PANCREATITIS AT THE AGE OF 65. MY MOM RECENTLY DIED FROM COMPLICATIONS DUE TO ACUTE LIVER FAILURE…I’M SURE THOSE LITTLE DEVILS FOUND THEIR WAY INTO HER LIVER. HER POOR LIVER DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO…SO IT SHUT DOWN. SHE DIED BACK IN LATE MARCH OF THIS YEAR! SHE WAS 14 MONTHS SHY OF HER 80TH BIRTHDAY! MY BROTHER AND I HAVE THE TRAIT AS WELL AS G6PD DEFICIENCY! MY QUESTION IS, HOW DO YOU TEST FOR COOLEY’S ANEMIA TRAIT?

Sickle cell is an inherited disease caused by a defect in a gene. A person will be born with sickle cell disease only if two genes are inherited-one from the mother and one from the father. Sickle cell is an inherited disease caused by a defect in a gene. A person will be born with sickle cell disease only if two genes are inherited-one from the mother and one from the father. A person who inherits just one gene is healthy and said to be a "carrier" of the disease.
