Athletes with Sickle Cell trait have special considerations before and during their workout. During intense exercise, these athletes are at risk for a possibly life threatening condition called "exertional sickling." The athlete's red blood cells change from a disc shape to a rigid, sickle shape and can become trapped in arteries leading to muscles, blocking oxygen from getting to muscle and tissue. Exertional Sickling is a serious condition that can cause pain, weakness, and fatigue, and can be live threatening. Rest, hydration, and high flow oxygen are used to treat and prevent an exertional sickling crisis.

Its sickening how the trait is overlooked as something "not that serious". Everyone with the trait has there own experiences or none at at. For me if it's too hot is like I feel drained even when not doing anything strenuous. I am more thirsty then the average person etc. Some of us experience the same ailments as those with the disease, just on a lower and slower scale. Those with SCD have problems with their bones, teeth the crisis etc.. right now my back bones are affecting my hip, I have lost teeth due to my body not being able to absorb calcium effectively, the way how my body breaks down proteins are similar to a person with SCD but just slower. My kids that do have the trait share the same exact symptoms even though we dont have the full blown disease. I just feel more studies should be conducted in regards to how SCT affects adults.

@@soherestheteasis496 see that's the crap I'm talking about. SCD breaks down muscle or protein abnormally due to the lack of adequate oxygen being able to reach all the parts of the body. You may need further extensive test, if you have not already. Like a CBC, CBC /w diff, metabolic panel, organ test etc. You need your doc to dig further to find out the source of the inflammation

I would find more information about your condition regarding calcium and protein. I have trait, I require 3 liters of water a day not to be thirsty with dry skin. I have a tendency to get low on potassium so I eat spinach and bananas or a supplement if my eye starts to twitch or leg cramps at bedtime. Not sure if it’s related to SCT. I did have a crisis in nursing school from exhaustion, dehydration, extreme stress, decreased immunity from not eating well do to poverty. That’s when the knives 🔪 started throughout my entire body like to was going in and out of all my muscles, bones and organs…. I was too fatigued and exhausted to move but eventually I just started drinking tons of water and eating to pull myself together…and it stopped after I rehydrated. I was scared to death and couldn’t seek help because of missing class or clinicals or marathon study session wasn’t an option.

I found out I had SC trait at age 32 (I'm 48 now) and nobody said to be more careful. This is exactly what happened during my first marathon. I was under hydrated. The first 14 miles were good, but then my easy pace grinded to a halt. It was too early to be hitting the wall, especially since I had run much further than this during my training with no problems. By mile 16, I could see the cramps in my legs. Even my right forearm was cramping. It was painful / miserable, but I managed to finish. Afterwards, I felt like I had serious arthritis in my left shoulder for weeks. I had to do some rehab to get my strength and range of motion back. I managed to recover and run another marathon 4 1/2 months later. This one was great with no issues. But I've had this happen a handful of times during workouts when I'm under hydrated. Now that I know what it is, I'm a lot more proactive on the front end with hydration. But also, I've learned when it's happening and I need to stop and rest. Thanks for the info!

I have Sickle Cell trait. Yes, even though I look white, I am in fact half Puerto Rican, born and raised. It is not widely known that 36% of all Caribbean people have some form of Sickle Cell, even if they don't have African ancestry. I found out I had the trait the hard way. In my youth I was an avid work out freak. My spleen exploded inside of me and it almost killed me. I informed all of my family and it turns out they ALL had it too. And like me, they had no idea Puerto Ricans or other Caribbean people could have it. In fact, 40 years ago my Emergency Room Doctors were totally baffled that a non-African could even have Sickle Cell anemia. I think this video piece doesn't go far enough to warn people. Not to mention that it implied that Sickling of the cells within people who have the "trait" is ONLY brought on by "exertion". I think the video gives the impression that people with the trait are almost like "carriers" but are not effected by the disease unless it is triggered by exertion. I'm no Angiologist (blood expert), but I've lived with disease almost 64 years now, and I'm not so sure that even the so called "experts" fully understand Sickle Cell in all it's forms. I think we who have the trait, just like those who have the full disease, have red blood cells that are deficient (sickled or flattened) cells from the time they are manufactured, which is regularly. In other words, I think people with the trait have a percentage of the disease just like those with the full blown disease. No pun intended, I don't think it is as "black and white" from suffering the effects as they Medical profession and as we see here in the video presumes. I think people may have the trait in varying degrees leading all the way up the full blown disease. Am I wrong? Or does anyone else suspect this?

@@lorenamadrigal156 I suspect it may have to do with the percentage or red blood cells that are sickled. The medical community measures those with SCD if their red blood cells are more than 50% sickled. Less than that they are considered the trait carriers. Drinking & Eating healthy and building muscle also helps to make your body stronger. The pain will stay the same tho, but if your body is stronger you wont get a crisis as fast as if you don't. I use heavy weights and don't do high intensity workouts that often. Start out slow and keep listening to your Body. But when u feel sick u shouldn't overdo things. It's important to remember the things that work out for your body. Some yoga exercises also give me a crisis because of the random blood flow/ circulation changes.

I have trait & didn’t learn I had it until almost 5 years in the marines. Down the road I got severe rhabdomyolysis & compartment syndrome in both legs, which I almost lost. Wish people would further educate on stuff like this, as I was told it’s nothing to worry about just drink more water.

3 liters of water a day is best practice for me or I get extremely dry skin and mouth. But doing something as extreme as military…you don’t get enough time to rest and properly hydrate… Yes I had rhabdomyelitis and it is so painful

3 liters of water a day and more with heat and activities….you can get Rhabdomylitis if you aren’t hydrated and doing to much exertion plus stress. Those tiny crisis are painful and I believe they damage the organs, muscle, bone, joint and overall body tissues.

I have the disease. And it hurts like hell! My kids have the trait. And believe me, I make sure they drink plenty of water. I don't give them juice or soda like that. Every purple moon, I'll let them have 1 only. I make sure they're hydrated. Thank you for this video. There are a lot of things that I've learned. Plus, there's a lot of ignorant individuals that knows nothing about this disease, or the inheritance of it.

Good thing you make a mistake and have children with someone that has the trait or the actual disease. I live on 3 liter of water a day or I will get dry skin and mouth…if I get dehydrated plus extreme stress I can get Rhabdomylitis. I’ve only had it twice in my 52yrs. First time was more severe like a true attack

I am a Kinesiologist and trainer with the trait. I work out 15-20 times a week, teaching classes and personal training, on top of my own fitness regimen. I've done this for 20 years. I'm 41. it's doable if you do it right.

I truthfully need some advice because I’m tryna be a boxer with it. And I’m just finding out that sickle cell trait could be harmful for athletes after experiencing no effects and doing sports karate and basketball for years. This is really messing up my dreams. What advice can you recommend.

you are not a medical doctor nor hematologist and are giving people bad advice and false hope in some cases. SCT affects each person differently and genetics from parents also are a factor in who can exercise with no issue and who is suffering from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia type of illness due to SCT and in bed a lot because their joints and muscles hurt or they can't catch their breath. folks like you make me tired. stop writing off people's complaints about chronic illness from SCT. swimming is the only activity most SCT pain sufferers say they enjoy because of the lack of gravity. peace

@@Dutchess80 What’s bad advice about “It’s doable IF you do it right”? That could mean going to your doctor, getting blood work done, etc. I didn’t say “Just do it.” I said it’s doable. And, yes, it affects people differently. I’m one with SCT and have done it as others with SCT have. Get you some rest.

@@tlibrary2741 Excuse me for such a late reply. First, know your limits and then slowly test them. Start with a long walk or a short jog and see how you feel. Drink PLENTY of water before and after. Take small sips during. Push ups, sit ups, squats and such start with 3 or four sets of small reps like two or three, and see how you feel. When I run too long, I can have pain crises but they don’t last any longer than twenty minutes. I’m not saying to push yourself that hard. Do what challenges you until you no longer feel challenged, and then level up a little (every two to three weeks maybe).
