I'm an artist, and when I saw that the farrier was finishing one side of the shoe before shaping the whole thing I knew something was up. In 2d and 3d art you do both sides of one thing at the same time to keep them consistent, which is how you keep features like eyes and limbs symetrical and consistent, and that seems to be the case with making horse shoes. Having a shoe that tapers on one side so the hoof lands flat on the ground, mechanically, makes so much sense considering the horse's issue. I don't know how I ended up on this side of youtube but I love this, being a farrier is such an amazing art form. These are some lucky animals to be under your expertise and care!

Lots to love about the skill of a farrier, but I think one thing that I find most impressive, at least from the videos I have watched, is that they seem to forge the shoe to just the right size, seemingly all by sight.

It's wonderful that you are so aware of how his foot is landing and can rebalance this problem with a custom shoe that will have him landing flat and avoiding future damage to the bones and performance in that leg and foot.Impressive. Thank you for sharing.

It's to stay consistent in strength and precision. For the same reason he hits the anvil a few times before he gets to the material, to get into the rhythm. That's at least what a friend who does smithing as a hobby told me.

Question are wild horse feet like our bred horses in regards to fitting the horseshoe. You have a wild horse of multiple generations you find yourself shoeing, would it be the same as shoeing the horses in your videos? Are the feet the same in feelings? The horses don't seem to mind hot metal placed on their feet for sizing.
@phacialoveskakashi2119
@phacialoveskakashi2119 Жыл бұрын
@Rachel, yes, their feet are the same. The difference will be the temperment in dealing with their feet being messed with. Most domesticated horses have seen a ferrier at least once or twice in their lifetime.

OK I have to ask; what is with the hammer-anvil tap? I've seen every youtuber blacksmith do this and I don't get it. What is the point of tapping the anvil with the hammer after a few blows on the hot metal? Is there any point to this or has this just become a style thing?

Does making the shoe thicker on one side affect balance of the hoof
@moskibabyyy
@moskibabyyy Жыл бұрын
I know absolutely nothing about horses or what their hooves are even made of, but I do know prosthetics. Making it thicker on one side means even weight distribution on the entire hoof/foot. It’s like an arch support or a shoe that has the heel of one shoe built up

I'm curious, Why didn't you create a channel for the nail heads on the thinner side of the shoe? Won't the nail heads add height? Or will it not matter as the heads wear down? Don't get me wrong, you created a beautiful hand crafted therapeutic shoe. If the goal was to lower the outside of the hoof, why not have a channel for the nail heads also?

Why were the two nails not countersunk, was that to make that side of the shoe a bit higher? Sorry, not too familiar with this subject ~ obviously 😊
@ISIO-George
@ISIO-George Жыл бұрын
I had the same question too. I am guessing the reason is because that is the thin side of the shoe, and it would make the shoe too weak at the site of the nails.

@kylieharrison3782

Yes. Like shoe inserts for humans. It alters which part of the sole hits the ground first and encourages the correct foot roll action to support the ankle, knee etc mechanically. At least that's my understanding of the prosthetic err horse shoe 😅

I think, and it's just what I've been told, it has something to do with the cooling time of the metal they are hitting. It they hit it without letting it cool in-between it affects the strength of the end product due to some kind of (mumble science).

The video didn't show how the horse walked before, really didn't see anything after because the camera was so far away, I don't see how that little bit of beveling on the shoe could have made that much of a difference
