Side by Side Comparison...Pelican Catch 120 and Lifetime Yukon 116!

I was asked to make a video comparing the Catch 120 and the Yukon Angler...so we highlighted some features, similarities, and differences, then took them to the water to put their stability to the test!

Hi! Thanks for watching, and thank you so much for the kind words! Got a recommendation for you if you're not set on a specific kayak yet. I don't own one and have never used one, but my ex-wife and her husband, who we kayak with often, both have NuCanoe Frontier 12's...they are very stable with a ton of open deck space; she brings everything but the kitchen sink with her when she kayaks, and he's a big guy and often rides 1 or more of their dogs along, too. You can see in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH_GYX6AqJain5Y both of their kayaks and how they're loaded, though I don't think any of the pups made this trip. At 1:43 in that vid, you can see Pepper and Mike at screen left, and their kayaks just beyond them. Their dogs are a good bit smaller than 90 lbs, but Mike is a good bit bigger than 235! Their kayaks, along with the Pelican and the Lifetime from this video, all perform very well on our trips, which are not always smooth, relaxing waterways, but between you and your dog, you wouldn't be leaving much margin for gear on the Lifetime. I'll be picking up a new kayak later this week, and there'll be videos to follow testing, using, and reviewing it, but I don't think it'd have room for the dog, unless he rode in the tankwell behind you. I have experience with the Pelican, the Lifetime, a Perception Striker, and an Ascend, but I know lots of people with lots of different boats, so if you have questions, ask them, and I might have or be able to get an answer for you. That was a GREAT review. I have never seen a reviewer try and take it all the way to failure. Guess they were scared to get wet. I went with the Yukon personally because Lifetime products are Made in the USA. Most of the Pelican products are made in Canada.

OK we have a pair of 120 scissors, a pair of 116 scissors, now we are going to see how far we can run with them. I don't know why this video reminds of that. 😕 😀 Was interesting. Needed one of those RC alligator's heads in the water, coming up from behind Brandon. I like a little tipping in a kayak, canoe, if it has solid secondary buoyancy, a slightly rounded bottom will roll over a wave, wake. Less likely to hinge flip, one side gets lift, other digs in, as in total flat bottom.

You won’t be disappointed! Couple years in, now, and the SeaDek still looks brand new. One bit of advice…take your time! It’s fairly expensive stuff, and you don’t want to waste it. Let us know how it turns out, and Stay Safe!

One of the, if not THEE best kayak stability test videos on youtube! This helped me decide with my purchase. Although the pelican has better stability I went with the yukon and got one today. I have been looking for a marine mat/sea deck kit for it and cant find a darn thing. I noticed you have a very nice mat on your yukon. May I ask where you got it from?

You won’t be disappointed with the Yukon…we have 2 and the only thing I can say negative about them is that the tail wheel is useless…get a cart if you have to move it any distance. I have a pedal kayak coming this next week that I want to try out in ponds and lakes; most of our creeks and rivers are too shallow to allow the use of a pedal drive...anyway, I'll get some videos on that one published as soon as I can, too. The Catch 120 weight capacity is 400 lbs...I'm roughly 205 and with me, my coolers, camping equipment, etc., I doubt I've ever come close to that. Stay safe!

We were reboarding in fairly shallow water, and usually with assistance, although I do remember Brandon getting back in unassisted at least once, and I’m pretty sure that was back into the Yukon. I’ve reboarded the Catch a couple times unassisted in about the same depth water, and I’m 50 lbs heavier than he is, and nearly 30 years older…so my guess would be that successful reboarding is more a matter of form, physical condition, and in my case, maybe a little luck! LOL. As far as the hatches, I’d say the rubber snap down on the Yukon likely has the best chance of staying dry, vs the quick lock on the Catch, but there wasn’t much water in either of them when we were done. Both kayaks also have numerous screw and rivet holes that could potentially allow some water in, and the paddle parks on the Yukon are a terrible design that is more than likely responsible for the water that was in it. They are simply holes drilled through the hull with bungee cord leading through them…no thought towards watertight integrity whatsoever. Great questions, stay safe!

It would depend on the condition...we gave $499 new for Melinda's 2 years ago, and about $350 for another Yukon used about the same time that was in reasonable shape, but certainly not new! Everything goes up, though, and the Yukon/Teton is selling new now for $500-629, depending on the where...plus are there any "value added" accessories? Rod holders, paddles, vests, anchor and/or a trolley, etc.? At the end of the day, I'd say that if I really liked it and wanted it, I'd probably try to talk the price down a little, but would likely still pay it otherwise. Hope this helps. Stay safe!

Hi, Joe, and thanks for watching! The Yukon has a more streamlined single bow, and is, in fact, faster than the Catch. The Catch is basically a tunnel hull, and both hulls merge right at the front of the kayak...I don't know if I'd call it a double bow, but the overall effect is very barge-like! The Catch is definitely not the fastest SOT around, but it is very stable. For turning...I don't know that I've really noticed much difference, unless I put in the aftermarket fin I installed on the Catch to improve tracking...in that case, the Yukon definitely turns easier...but I usually only use the fin on lakes or ponds, especially if there's a little bit of wind. On rivers, The Catch's tendency to yaw doesn't really matter so much because currents are constantly pushing and turning you, anyway. Stay safe!

The new one came from Walmart for $498 about a year and a half ago, but I’ve noticed Lifetime’s msrp for it this year is $799. Hi, David, and thanks for watching! The water there is always stained to a clay color, but you're right...most of this year it's been absolutely filthy! You should see the mess it makes of the bottom of my kayaks every time I go up there! The past couple weeks it's finally stopped raining so that it's a little better, but no rain brings on a whole different set of problems, not so much with the lake as with the rivers running into and out of it.
