Just bought the Hero3+ Silver today. I believe I'll be very happy with it in my arsenal. I'll be using it in a wide variety of ways. I'll also be using it steady mounted above my drafting table so i can create WIP/how-to footage while painting and illustrating, so the up-close clarity is very important for me. I have had the Hero3Black for nearly a year now and frequently use the wifi option, but it has been overheating and locking up (currently talking with GoPro about it). So I bought a Silver 3+ last week, but the distance focus was an issue. I adjusted the focus, and now have good focus(30cm-infinity), fast wifi and long battery life. For me that is what is important. Thanks for the video it helps to confirm the decision.

youve got the best gopro comparison videos on youtube! Im currently using the Hero 2, mainly for aerial photography of houses and debating if i should upgrade Even though I do use it for video as well, the video quality for either is far beyond my needs. I'm just searching for the gopro that will give me the sharpest pictures of houses which may be 100-500 feet away. Even though megapixels are not the defining factor, it feels like if I went to the silver+ at 10mp whereas my hero2 shoots at 11mp.

@Aidan Powell I can't respond to you directly because of your privacy settings. I feel the quality out of the 3 can potentially be better but in a common setup the 3+ might appeal to you more. The 3+ has had some updates since this video that improves it in a few ways. I'd also like to mention the 3+'s auto power idea when not recording makes the camera last for hours longer then the 3 in on and off use. I'd recommend waiting till the end of sept early october to buy though. New GoPro's come out around this time so it might drive the cost down of previous models or you might find something more appealing.

+Aidan Powell You privacy settings are set up in a way that I can't reply to you directly. I'd recommend the Hero3+ Black becasue it has 1440p mode which is great for anything on trails and surfing. Offers a taller frame so you see everything from the trail to the sky. Plus the reasons you were leaning towards it as well.

Thanks for this video! Very well-produced and exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't find any other comparisons between these two. I ended up going with the 3+ Silver because I don't want to spend much time in post and I liked the 3+ Silver footage direct from the camera better (plus I found it for cheaper). Thank you for the video. You are the best reviewer I ever seen for camera field. I was searching for this kind of comparison for hours. This is unique. I have chosen the Silver + because is much sharper and clear. It also has very fast WIFI and long battery life. The black edition has better capacity to show far away details, BUT it has a washed and red image feeling. In my opinion for this price range Silver+ is the best. If you want to spend more, you should buy the BLACK+, although it also has some issues shown by MARK in another video. Overall, the GOPRO HERO3+ Silver is the best !

This really helped me decide on which to choose. Although my main concern here is that I'm from the Philippines, and currently staying in the states for 3 more weeks to finish university. I'm worried about receiving a defective camera and not being able to return it (do you think it would be difficult to do so from the Phils)? So here's my question, for the defects on gopros (let's just say based on your experience with bugs and etc on the past), do software updates fix all of them? Reading the negative comments on amazon made me afraid to spend that much money and figure out that my camera would end up as a paper weight.

Only difference I can see is that the black edition applies less post-processing filters. Comparing the video from Black and Silver, the black is a silver without contrast and sharpening. Period. Black is oriented to a professional market, where the post-pro is much more intense, Silver is oriented to common users, and common users want the best video direct from the camera. Nice video!

I recently got the gopro hero 3+ silver and its awesome, love the quality the sharpness the way it looks is stunning! It's satisfying you can always edit your videos if you dislike it, the 3+ is great, the quality is not bad, its best at 1080p 60 fps... The black great as well I'd get both.. I have some probes with my camera with the laggy videos but I think it was just me shaking as I was recording but yea thanks mark for this video I tried subscribing but my laptop broke so yea good job !

Do you mean the playback when you watch it later is laggy? If so here are some tips. Play off your main hard drive and not the micro sd card in the GoPro. For example, drag them onto your desktop and try playing them. If you try and play them off the Gopro's SD card then it's reading the footage slower then it's trying to push out. Like funneling sand into a narrow pipe. Bigger the pipe the faster the sand will drain down. Try VLC player. It's free and cache footage to your hard drive to ensure for smoother playback. Upgrade to an SSD drive.

good video. not many video comparing these two models. these are the exact two models i have a hard time deciding. I love black edition remote wifi, better spec in some areas. however, i also worried the lag in wifi connection to smart phone. as such, with a better price point, better battery life and better wifi, i think i will go for 3+ silver. would really love to have 3+ black superview though!

Black Superview can be gotten out of the Hero3 Blaack with some work in post. It's fairly easy but it is added worl. Any shot filmed in 2.7k or 1440p can be a super view shot when squished down a bit.

Also wifi is around 6 times faster in the Hero3+ series. Fairly low latency when viewing through the phone.

Appreciate the feedback :D I have a few more videos like this using the entire range Hero3 series minus the white models (not a huge fan with how it handles contrast). Anything the says Comprehensive in the video icon is like this one which currently is only 3-4 as they take a few days to put together (I'm really poor with voice overs on the first take). Great comparison! Just broke my Hero 3 Black edition and was worried if the Silver+ would measure up to the Black edition. Only factor now, is the fact that the Silver+ doesn't have the Video and Photo simultaneous record option like that Black editions have! Now its..is a $100 worth that option/convenience.

A screen cap is roughly like a 1/3 res version of a real photo. A real photo will net you a image at a resolution if 4000x3000 and size of 4.7mbs (roughly a 10mb photo for silver) while a screen cap will be around 1080p (or whatever you captured) and be a couple hundred kilobytes. It would look bad but just doesn't hold the same amount of detail a true photo takes.

Hey Mark great video. Im thoroughly torn between these two. Il be using the camera for a second angle at weddings as well as mountain biking and other action sorta stuff. Id say that low light and accurate colors are more important than audio and battery life. I do like the smaller simpler housing and price of the silver though. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

It's not the best. The Hero3+ series is about 30% better then what ships with the Hero3 but I imagine you'd get maybe 10% more life if you invested in picking up some of th enew 1180mph batteries from GoPro themselves. Personally if you aren't going to take advantage of the more prosumer features in the Hero3 Black, I'd suggest going with the Hero3+ Silver. Better battery life, wifi, and audio. I love the Black but for most people, they'd be happier with the silver. take care :D

I had a 3+ black that I started using while scuba diving this year. Loved it! Unfortunately, the teacher strap came unscrewed and it decided to take a solo swim. Even with bobber handle, I wasn't able to find it. I had an enlargement made of picture I took from a video and it came out really well! Now looking to replace but not finding any good deals for 3+ black on Craigslist, but a few 3+ silvers. Now that I have been spoiled with black, would I be disappointed with silver? I really use it mainly for scuba diving. Thanks

geri wood I would recommend the Hero3+ Black or above. The quality on both the Hero4 Silver and Hero4 Black are exceptional. 3+ Silver is a bit weaker in bit rate and slightly soft. I'd also recommend Polar Pro's Backpack/Scube strap mount. Keeps your camera locked in and can be quickly released once you reach your location. polarprofilters.com/shop/goprobackpackmount

Hero3 Black especially since more of your footage will be looking at far away landscape. Hero3 Black picks up the distance scenery much sharper.

I'd go with the Hero3+ Silver. You might find a better battery life and better audio to be more beneficial to those long outdoor days. The auto power save mode on the + line is really good. Something I missed in the 2012 models.

Hey, really liked this video, great job. I just got a 3+ silver for Christmas and have owned a 3 silver for a while now. Seemed the two cameras you reviewed both had wins and losses across the test. I wonder how much of these differences are just based on the camera's operating/ logic software? Also, seems that the original Hero 3 offered deeper diving depths by default (197ft), and the same depth rating on the 3+ requires the purchase of an extra "dive housing".

Yes, the new housing solved some issues users ran into above water (mainly jamming with that little lock piece you have to pull on just to start opening it). Case is worse in depth but mainly a plus on everything above water.

They both have different perks for Dirt biking. On one hand the Hero3+ Black has 1440p mode which is great for anything on trails and surfing. Offers a taller frame so you see everything from the trail to the sky. However the Hero3+ Silver has better battery and audio plus the bike itself will be sharper in focus. So the riders hands and frame of the bike would look really crisp if it was mounted to the riders chest. If you plan on mounting to the Head though the upclose focus might not matter and in that case maybe the Hero3 Black is the way to go.

I'd go with the Silver series. It'll get you 90% of the way there. Save the extra money for more batteries and mounts. If you planned on doing a lot of editing, color correction, or messing with resolutions in your videos then I'd go with the Black but if not, Silver will be perfect. If you can wait I'd see if the new Hero4 get announced by early October.

MarkHawkCam Actually, I have both the AS100 and GoPro Black plus. I ended liking the GoPro more for the following reasons. What I like about the GoPro 3 Black plus (Considering Portune on) 1) The blacks at daytime are better. This is important for capturing more details then editing will give the edge. 2) The image is sharper and more clean. After post editing and sharpening the GoPro has less video noise than the Sony. 3) Flat lens! This is the critical reason why surfers like GoPro, water does not stick on the lens. BTW, I bought the flat lens for the Sony but water somehow still stick on the lens even though its better than the stock curved one. 4) Mounts and excellent resale value, yes you pay more but you know your money is not wasted. 5) Smaller and lighter than the Sony What I like about the Sony AS100 (Considering XVAS Pro mode) 1) Image stabilisation is the best period 2) I really like the colours from the Sony 3) Mounting without the waterproof case 4) GPS, not always but I liked it actually 5) Night recording is better. I will definitely go for the GoPro 4 if they considered AT LEAST 2 advantages from the Sony and provide AT LEAST 4k at 30fps minimum.

The Silver+ series mainly because the battery would last longer and you could carry less of them. However the Hero3 Black's 1440 mode would offer extra field of view at the top and bottom of the frame which means you'd see everything from the sky to the trail beneath your feet. You would need a machine that could play back that footage though.

tough choice if you are limiting to these two model. The Hero3+ Silver will have better up close sharpness and battery life but the Hero3 Black has 1440p mode which a 4x3 filming format that adds extra field of view at the top and bottom. This means your entire body can be captured in your filming. The Hero3+ Silver doesnt have this though it has 960p which is the same idea BUT is not really the HD most people want. I'd aim for the Hero3+ Black if you could or the Hero4 Silver. Both offer the best of the Hero3 Silver and 1440p mode. Plus a bunch of other neat things.

Yeah back when they first launched. There was a lot of problems (I go over them in my Part 2 Quicklook for the Hero3 from a year ago) some hardware some software based. They knocked out most of the issues in hardware by Jan-Feb then the others software issues through out the year. I went through 3 at first. They're pretty solid now but if you have these issues I would exchange it if you can, contact gopro and they'll swap it out for you perhaps, or update the firmware through their support page. Real easy walk through guide. Hope you get it working but I would contact GoPro.

The Hero3 Black is a more powerful camera in terms of spec over the Hero3+ Silver. So even though it's older it's specs on paper are better. This video just tries to show you the differences.

Different lens setup in the + series was meant to be better at up close focus (as complaint in the original Hero3 series). Either way if you can, I'd wait a month wait for the Hero4 announcement.

How much time do you think you'll spend editing your clips? If the answer is little to none go with the Silver+. If you plan on diving deep into post production side of things then the Black or Black+ is the way to go.

I'd go with the Hero3+ Silver. It's pretty much on auto pilot the whole time. You just need to know how to turn it on, press record, and keep feeding it fresh batteries. I also suggest picking up a class 10 micro SD card. I recommend the SanDisk Ultra series for this camera. J'irais avec la Hero3+ Silver. C'est à peu près sur le pilote automatique tout le temps. Vous avez juste besoin de savoir comment l'activer, appuyez sur dossier, et garder le nourrir de nouvelles piles. Je suggère également ramasser une carte micro SD de classe 10. Je recommande la série SanDisk Ultra pour cet appareil.

Yes and No. The Hero3+ Black is working as designed. It's meant to give better up close focus then long distance. So the image becomes softer about 10-12 feet out. With the Hero3 Black series you had the opposite. Up close images were soft but long distance we soft. GoPro has commented on this to sellers and it seems that they have made attempts to change this for future SKUs and adjust some models sent in but I'd still expect the long distance to be slightly soft at range. Also the Hero3 Black will not have access to Protunes 2.0 which allows for a lot of manual control, color grade options, and some other neat features, When it comes to Ariel photography I highly suggest the Hero3 black over the Hero3+ Black. However I don't recommend buying a Hero3 Black second hand unless you trust the seller. The Hero3 launched with a number of hardware and software issues. While later release became very stable a number of launch units are various fail rates or issues.

Just a different color profile and maybe a internal limitation because of different parts. While the aim to make cameras identical, there are different teams in charge of different parts of each camera. Could be a number of reasons.

Awesome reviews of various GoPro's! Thank you for all your work! Obviously, most of your reviews pertain to video shooting. I am planning to buy a camera primarily for time-lapse shooting (building homes on mission trips over a 3 day period). I am therefore mostly interested in quality of still shots from about 15-40 feet (the area from the camera to the front of the building site to the back of the site) and battery life. In reality, $ is not a big problem. I want the best GoPro camera to do this job (but don't want to waste money without a significant return on investment...). +Moto boner Silver+ would be better for battery life and some Bluetooth mic options that are still supported. hero3 Black might perform better for long distance focus. Personally would go for the Silver+ if you had to or try and check the Hero3+ Black.

Personally I'd start with GoPro Studio. It's a great place to start, export quality is easy/top notch and it's free. When you wanna go further I recommend Adobe Premiere Pro 2014 CC. 1-2 10 minute youtube tutorials and you'll be up to speed. You'll have issues but that's part of the game with any piece of editing software.

Anything with trails I always suggest the Hero3 Black or Black+. 1440p gives you extra field of view at the top and bottom of the frame so you never have to worry about the camera being aimed to high or low. You generally captures everything from the sky to the trails with little distortion. That being said if you can wait the, Hero4+ announcement should come late Sept to early October.

Hero3+ series. Longer battery life which is pretty important when you are in an environment that begs to leave the case closed as long as possible. Make sure you rinse your cases with fresh water shortly after exposure to salt water to avoid jams and messing up the vacuum seal.
