Side By Side Special 2000, PS1 racing game

An excellent arcade racing game from Taito. Such a shame it never left Japan. If you can play Japanese games on your system, I urge you to import it, it's almost entirely in English. Just make sure to get the Special 2000 version, that's the only one that supports analogue controls using the neGcon.

Actually, the course shown at 1:36 is supposed to be Akina. It's the game's only point-to-point course and it certainly looks the part of Akina, it has the five consecutive hairpins and everything. Very difficult, too. Worth noting that Akina isn't technically a real mountain either, it's actually called Haruna in real life.

The other courses in this game are really hard, it really forces you to learn MT drifting.

MT isn't really a big thing in the game. I have another video with (what I believe is) the WR time for Akina Downhill and I use AT there.

eBay has several copies for ~20 bucks, the game's absolutely worth that much and more. And yeah, neGcon is a must. I can't do anything in the game with a normal controller.

Is there any documentation which confirms differences between the first release and "2000" version? Here Ghegs says that only "2000" is neGcon compatible, however that is not true afaik, the original release shows neGcon compatibility in the manual and on the case. It is notable the first release was 5800 yen, and "2000" was 2000 yen. Isn't "2000" version just a budget release?

You could just ask me directly ;) It is possible I got it wrong here, since the Internet for the longest time claimed that 2000 has analog controls, without specifying that it means the neGcon and not the Dual Shock which was released around that time. What is certain is that only 2000 has rumble support via Dual Shock (but it still doesn't support analog via Dual Shock). Other videos on KZbin say there are also slight differences to the cars' attributes (max speed and so forth). The first release's case does indeed seem to list the SLPH0001 product code for neGcon, now that I look at a bit small picture of it. I only have 2000 myself so I can't confirm for sure.

I still play the game too! Just earlier this year I put up a video where I time attack Akina Downhill, and take what I believe is the world record. Or at least I've been unable to find any non-TAS video with a better time.

Side By Side is #1, after that it gets trickier...maybe Rally de Europe and Touge Max G? Most of the really good ones on the system were released in US or PAL regions as well.
