This is actually really easy!! After watching this tutorial , i immediately did it successfully! I didn't even have to roll on the ground to make my self comfortable with the motion. Maybe my body is just used to the motion! We'll in my opinion this is the easiest flip of all. Unlike front and back flips, if anything does go wrong when your doing this flip you could immediately recover because u could easily spot the ground! Thx Jessi

This is awesome, Love the detail. Way to go guys. What park was this at? Gosh...I really need to try and make it to the Academy, been saying that for like a year now. The side flip is something that I've been wanting to learn how to do since like forever. Keep them coming

Like the video said, fear comes from lack of understanding. Either practice it more on the bed to get completely used to the movement or try watching more side flip tutorials. Seeing it from other angles and seeing other peoples' take on it can help a lot. I haven't even tried to do a side flip yet, so don't take me at my word on it if you don't want to, but the advice I gave you is generally what I do with everything I have difficulty with.

I was with my mate Carl today and we went Freerunning. He was trying to teach me the side flip, we had this video open while we did it haha He is amazing at flips so he's a good teacher. It was very hard learning it put at least I have another flip to add to my collection. Time to learn the 'Cork' next :D

I think if you got a friend to help you flip while pushing you in the air would work. Also do it in a gym, the grass or a mat, or even a trampoline to practice your flips. Try doing it on those so you don't get hurt so much! I wouldn't reccomend the grass though because it could hurt. Just trying to think of suggestions!

Dude, Jesse, your video editing is a huge part of your tutorials, and I love everything you do with it, and your skills have improved a lot. Keep it up...2 questions though. Is there a way to mic yourself? I do notice a lot of planes in the background of most of your videos and it can be a bit distracting. And I noticed Shane only flipped in one direction. Is that pretty common for most people to only side flip in one direction? Thanks!

Thanks Jesse! your tutorial really helped! I did my first good sideflip :) I noticed these were (and still are) my biggest mistakes and points to concentrate on 1. I arched my back wrong, should have bend slightly forward. 2. When pushing off the ground, I lifted my leg up the wrong way. More to the side than to my chest...this turned my body backward. 3. I turned my head to the left (not neutral).. therefore I backfliped :P Focussing on my feet helpes while flipping (to keep my head still)

Going to start working on these, I think the sideway shoulder roll will help loads. Hmm I'm confused to what a barrel roll actually is, people say it's a log/sausage/pencil roll but in contemporary dance it's an actual move that akin to a tucked upright double leg, not a side flip, I really want to find a tutorial on that because I think that will also help progress to a side flip and double leg

The problem for me is the keeping my heads neutral 'Because!' i want to spot the ground, which makes my head turn and therefore not neutral :P i'll just try not spotting to much at first (in a gym). do i have to keep my head in the middle, close to my chest? or when you say neutral do you also mean, NOT pressed against your chest? Besides that, i think it was a really good tutorial! def gonna do the barrel roll, and head neutral thing ;) Thnx!

okay so theres a few different ways to approach a side flip. but if I caught onto what you were saying you want us to approach it the way you do so your shoulders don't turn you around while in the air Im more into martial arts and parkour than freerunning and tricking but I can do a few flips one of which is a frontflip I have been practicing doing a sideflip but punching into the ground like a front than turning my shoulders and having my arm grab my knees as I flip. are you saying I shudnt?
