I set mine up so it pushes me along as straight as possible. Then dip a paddle tip in here and there to steer and make corrections. Handles better with a couple of sand bags up front when solo.

Well, I'm glad i saw your video. Same canoe. I have been thinking of trying this too. That motor is just too hard to reach back behind you. I saw an extension tiller that uses what looks like a ratchet's universal joint adapter. Still trying to figure out how to craft something like that.

Takes a while to figure out a process that works.

I run a 55 lb motor on mine just like you have it but further back. Then i made a long tiller extension and i sit in a plastic lawn chair closer the the center of the boat with the battery behind me/ opoosite the motor facing bacwards. I cut the legs down so i sit lower for stability. Then i use the back seat as a foot rest/lunch table. So youre facing backward which is kind of annoying but i do a lot of trolling, so i have two clamp on rod holders and i troll the perimeter of the lakes keeping my focus more behind me. I have a Pelican pretty much the same canoe you have. I clamped a piece of wood between the motor mount and the boat to take strain off the plastic and straighten out the way it hangs. Best finshing lf my life in this setup. And it even takes the waves pretty decent.😅 I probably have 30 full days on the water. It's all about balance and keeping the center of gravity low.

Sounds like a good setup.

Love the content man, great video for me, someone who just got a good deal on used 16’ canoe and a 14lb thrust trolling motor. Half the fun is figuring out how to set it up yourself!

That's exactly right. Hope you have a ton of fun with yours.

I've seen guys take and add a little rudder using a cutting board to the back of the motor. Helps it track way better they say.

Good idea

You definitely want to use a quality motor mount which clamps onto both sides of the gunwales of the canoe and extends out several inches which gives you room to operate the trolling motor. Mounting a trolling motor directly to the canoe is not the safest bet. I hope you've found a solution. Best wishes.

I was just giving it a try. Thanks.

You gotta be smarter than the motor. Mine works fine.
