In this video I’ll share how to dismount and remount a side mount spare tire and what I believe are pros & cons when you have a Ford Model A with a side mount spare tire…
I definitely got a workout!
After watching my video, what do you think about having a Ford Model A with a side mount spare tire?
If you have one, does the design get on your nerves ever?
If you have wanted one, does it change your mind or is it still worth it to you to get that type of Model A?
I’d love to hear from you, have an awesome week!
Let’s keep Ford Model A’s on the road for generations to come!

One element that was left out of the pros/cons is that rear-mount spares interfere with a trunk accessory. It's not impossible to use a rear spare and a trunk together, but obviously you'd have to remove the trunk to access the spare and the spare forces the trunk to be cantilevered farther out from the rear chassis. This can make close-quarters maneuvering hard - particularly for closed 4-seaters with those tiny rear windows - since your car is longer than you might think.

LMAO!!! You are correct that "Side Mount Spare Tires" (tongue twister for you!!) do look "classy" and they do make working on the engine compartment difficult. Both our 31 standard coupe and 31 S/W town sedan have rear mounted spare tires and I wouldn't change it for the Con reasons that you spoke of. Funny ending of the video with the bloopers!! I like the looks of the side mounts but for working in the engine compartment the tires are in the way.. After having 4 flat tire on trip on the Lincoln Highway this summer I vote for the rear mount. When you are on the side of the road the side mount exposes you to the traffic more. Plus you have to pump them up. Not practical in my opinion Thanks Tina great discussion point.

Hi Tina!: That was a nice video! It shows the potential pitfalls of having the spare on the side instead of on the back. The side mount spare is REALLY classy looking, but it does restrict access to the engine compartment a bit. You are getting more workouts every video! Hey "Model T" I personally like the side mounted spare, I just think it looks cool. I have to admit, looks like it is in the way of that side of the car and would make it necessary to remove to do maintenance. But the cool factor would make the extra work worth it. On my old Volkswagens the spare is mounted inside the front trunk. And I run tires that are ever so slightly wider than the old original tires. and to get the spare in or out of its place, I have to let some of the air out as well. Thank god I have never have had a flat. (I hope, I didn't just jinks my self) So glad to see people that like old vehicles like I do. I love my old VWs. I think the old car hobby is so cool. A little expensive at times but worth it. I would love a Model A, some day maybe. Anyway I want to thank both you guys for your videos, I know they are hard work. But I sure like them

Hi! Yes they sure look nice! Old VW, very awesome! Maybe you could roll it out going to the outside like peeling a banana instead of lifting up. The fender dip doesn't look that deep. I would think that the wider tire would be better for handling & grip. Lets hope you don't have to do that it the rain at night. Very cool car-love it. I could go anywhere in that on a Fall day-not too hot or cold. Very nice Dove rad cap too. I do like the side mounts because you can strap a light or a small table to the tire when a flat surface is needed for working or whatever. Great video.
@Modeltshinn
@Modeltshinn Жыл бұрын
Thank you for you comment 💕 You know, I’d say the dip in the well is about 10 inches deep, I’d have to measure for accuracy but I’m probably close, so rolling isn’t as much as an option. Those posts that the lug nuts screw on to stick out and the whole thing has an odd setting that makes you have to pull forward just right so you don’t scratch up the back side of the wheel as you’re trying to lift the wheel out. But they do look nice!

I have a side mount, never bothered me. Goodyear tires too. Working on the engine is not a hassle, but I'm not heavy and I'm 6'1'" so I can reach pretty good. Rear mounts are nice, but not with a trunk. I've seen people put a lot of weight back there and it cantilevers to far out. Raises the nose too much. Just doesn't look right either. I loved Paul coming in and out of the shot, very funny. Your pump should not like you so much, the check valve is bad.

My 1930 Roadster has dual side mounts. I would convert to a rear mount if holes in the fenders and frame cover didn't have to be patched. My car has 17 inch wheels with 5.25/5.50 Firestone tires. Wheels are from a 1933 Ford I have been told. The spares have to be deflated all the time to fit in the wells. One spare wheel bracket could be rotated out and one was not movable. Got them both movable which made spare a bit easier to get in place. Don't know which way is correct.

Side mounts look great. But running the wider tire and having to deflate it to remove and then a repump. Cosmetic great. Practical not really. Engine access hindered. It’s all personal preference I guess. I’m a rear mount fan. Even then hinders trunk storage access. I think the spare should be mounted on the trunk lid. Yes it will need extra bracing but saves a lot of headaches. My two cents! Great video!

For those that don't like hand pumps, they make CO2 inflator kits for motorcycles that use 45 gram cartridges. One thing to note is that the tire won't stay inflated as long with CO2 as it will with air - the CO2 actually dissolves into and diffuses through the rubber of the innertube. Good enough for a day or two, but plan on airing up at home or a gas station later. :>)

Lol, I’d rather not 😂 Smaller tires would make it much easier for sure 💗 yes a battery type is a lot easier, ours broke though 🤣

Thank goodness I'll never have to do this... I only have a spare tire.. Those spear tires are too much work.(Dictionary optional?)🎬🎬🎬🎬🎬

Seems a little counter intuitive to let the air out of your spare tire, before changing a flat!! 😁

Doing many long distance, tours, I would only have a rear mounted spare. They may look nice on a display car, but I don’t think it’s practical for a touring car.

Yes, definitely easier. Some people have brought to my attention that the back spare makes it harder to have a trunk mount, so if you need extra storage for traveling then I guess that might pose an issue? I’ve never used the outside back truck before so I never thought about that.

Why add air if you only have remove air. Shouldn't the wheel nuts hold it in place.

I think, if I’m correct, if there’s no air or not enough air in the tire when on the side mount that it wouldn’t be good for the life of the tube…
