Robert, I found a record of "death from disease." From the Marine muster rolls John went from being enlisted to a short stay at Quantico, Virginia, then was sent to Paris Island, South Carolina to the Hospital ward. Also listed is, NDGO 155, NDGO is Navy Department General Order - but I cannot seem to find what 155 would indicate. It would seem that April 29 was correct from the dates on the muster roll it is confusing, but when also looking at the headstone application too. Excellent job on cleaning. It is great to see the two Roberts together again!
@sherrilee230 Жыл бұрын
He was only 16 at the time of his death? He must have been a run away.many years ago a lumber supervisor was in the navy at 16 when the war was over the owner of the ship gave him a job here
@SondraD7676 Жыл бұрын
@@sherrilee230 yes. He also may have had no choice in these years and depression years. The census records show "no job," just prior. It seems strange to us now, but that is how life was. Many times lied about ages to enlist to acquire some sort of living.
@mver191 Жыл бұрын
From what I can find N. D. G. O. No. 155 seems to be related to absence without leave.

A product called "Wet and Forget" is also approved for monuments. No bleach, no phosphates, and non-acidic. I've used it for years on my wood fences, driveway & sidewalks, siding and even the composite shingled roof. Best stuff since sliced bread, especially the hose-end bottle that shoots over 30 feet. You really do just wet stuff down and forget it. More isn't better, so you don't have to soak it. Depending on how deep the fungal and bacterial organisms have eaten, you'll see a big difference in a couple of weeks. I'm near the Gulf coast so molds and mildews are a constant battle. One treatment lasts 2 to 3 years. Your mileage may vary depending on weather conditions.
@HappierHeadstones Жыл бұрын
It must be a regional thing, W&F doesn’t do too much where I am at cemeteries...although, yes it is approved. I’m hoping to have better luck with it at my house on such things as you mentioned. I was raised in a coastal area and there is a difference in biological growths there than I have here near the Smokies.

To both Roberts - the "crusty stuff" is probably lichen and it comes in many different colors. Also, if you can't get the stuff out of the inscription itself, you can use a bamboo skewer stick to gently clean out the letters and numbers and the cross at the top. They use D/2 on the buildings in Washington, D.C. too.

I used D/2 on a polished black granite headstone for a family killed in a fire back in 1955. First application, wait 30 minutes, scrub with polymer brush. Rinse, then second application, then walk away for a week. Marker literally looks like the day it was installed in 1955. D/2 is expensive but remarkable stuff.

D/2 is not a chemical at all. It's a biological solution. From the D/2 website: "A contact time of only 10 to 15 minutes followed by scrubbing with a soft nylon or natural bristle brush will loosen most biological and air pollutant staining."
