Sideways Sid's Day with the RBW MGB | Fifth Gear

Right now if you want a traditional 2 seater sports car, in pure EV form, there isn’t much to choose from - in fact none of the major manufacturers make such a thing. However, solutions exist if you hunt around, such as the RBW MGB, a classic looking car that is, in fact, all-new and all electric. Fifth Gear’s latest recruit, Sid North, gets behind the wheel to tell us if it’s the perfect blend of new and old. Then he drives the track only version.

Back in 2002 for my 21st birthday, I gifted myself a 1972 MGB roadster, 'British Racing Green' w/tan seats and roof. Being a southern California car, it was in great shape and had zero rust, so it only needed a detail/wax to shine!!! I paid $1,100 for it, drove it home and used it as my work commuter for three years (with NO MECHANICAL FAILURES/PROBLEMS)!! A performance exhaust (the sound complimented its looks) and sound system were the two upgrades I had done to it. I live 40 miles north of Los Angeles and just 2 miles from the coast, so I miss those "late-evening coastal drives home from work"!!! ......... 🤔The process was:.....💭I'd start the engine, letting it idle and giving it few good revs throughout, until it warms up. Keeping it's windows up, I'd find some good music to play, turn its heater on, put on my driving gloves, drop it's top, give it a few more good revs, release the parking brake and zoom down the coast and head home!!!!. I came across another sports car, so I ended up selling the MG. The wheels on the gray MG in the video look awesome!!! Bravo.

I LOVE Curborough Sprint Course! I learned everything about driving fast there, 2 weeks after getting my first car! (1978 Mk2 Escort 1.3 Ghia 4dr!) I feathered the edges of brand new front tyres in 30 mins illicit access to the track, whilst waiting for mum to finish the Sunday roast! I loved the 1980's!

This kind of electric resto-mod is a high-end niche. Low volumes, tailor made craftsmanship, high quality materials come to a price. EVs for the masses already exist, think Dacia Spring or Renault Twingo etc.

This isn't a mass-produced car. Restomods never come cheap, especially personal one-offs.

That's the thing with restomod, you keep that classic design but use modern powertrain.

Restomod aren't mass produced, so don't expect it to be cheap. Even ICE restomod is no different.
