Believe it or not, overwatch actually had a small problem with adding a new ult voice line for reinhardt on his football skin a little while back. Reinhardt usually says "HAMMER DOWN" very loudly before ulting. But the new voice line for this skin was had reinhardt let out a quiet growl followed by "TOUCHDOWN". The new voice line was very hard to react to or see coming compared to the old voice line. Every pro player was forced to use that skin or suffer a disadvantage because of the harder to hear audio cue. They ended up redoing the line to be better to hear and more similar to the old voice line. But this is just the example of one of the dangers of introducing multiple voice lines for skins. Paladins is a very confusing game to play because of how many skins with unique voice sets there are. So many voice lines and ult lines and effects are in the game for every skin, it gets hard to react to and understand each one. Audio cues are useless if you don't know what the audio cue is supposed to mean.
@cakeu4 жыл бұрын
Tbh i agree with the paladins part. In the video, Sideways mentioned he'd like customizable ult lines, but imagine in paladins not only having almost 50 different champions (and with some decent balancing having a majority of them being meta, cough cough overwatch) but each one having from 1 to up to 6 different voicepacks with completely different voice actors reading different lines in different intonations, not only less effort goes in each on of them (i'm not necessarily saying they're bad, some of them stand out like crazy like Amerikhan, Wickerman Damba and such...) but it makes the whole game an even more confusing experience. And yeah, i know voicepacks are one of the game's biggest strengths, building on an already amazing gameplay customization system with the Loadouts and Talents, but it builds an inconsistent and confusing experience. Just look at one of Helvian's videos, especially the "why i hate paladins" ones. Yes, in Paladins you have highly customized skins, with some of them creating brand new characters replacing their original one (Pepper for instance), each with its own custom voicepack, compared to Overwatch's simple suit changes. But with such complicated skins, and a sloppy dev team, you get borderline P2W skins; Huntsman's silent dashes and drift, Gentleman Jenos's almost invisble ult and unaudible ult queue. Ok i may have drifted a bit far from the initial discussion, and i'm writing this on a 3yo video under a comment, but i hope someone reads this i dont know how much time i took writing this oh god

Dead By Daylight has a really interesting mechanic where whenever the game detects that the killer is chasing a survivor, it starts playing "chase music". When outside of a chase, there's sometimes small little bits of music, but its mostly just background sounds. When you stop hearing that intense music, you know that the killer lost you, so the music *is* a mechanic

Blizzard actually explained why ult lines are all the same - it's because you want to be able to react ASAP when you hear "Justice rains from above!". You basically have that connected with 'enemy Pharah bombarding my stuff', whereas "Rocket barrage incoming!" is just your friendly Pharah messing stuff up (not to mention both lines play at different volume to further that distinction). So the point is clarity, I'd even go as far as to say those few legendary skins that change the lines are maybe a little on the edge and I hope we'll never have like 5+ different ult lines for each hero. That would be madness.

TF2's competitive mode music is amazing. There are two songs that are basically the same that play at the end of the game, but the instrumentation slightly changes. If the defending red team wins, then the instruments are marching band inspired, adding bells, quads, bass drums, and snares. If the attacking blue team wins, the instrumentation is more like jazz, with bass, saxophone, and flute. Both of these songs have brass instruments playing the same thing.

7:13 Actually, in Overwatch your character DOES say something when you respawn. Each character has between 3 and 5 different voice lines for spawning, saying hello and thanks, extra voice lines when you use an ability, as well as a little character banter while waiting in the spawn room. Blizzard has been adding new voice lines in those last 2 categories every patch; even though the patch notes don't specifically disclose voice lines. You can even equip 4 different selectable voice lines for each individual character! People get mad at Blizzard WAY too fast, and you were doing Overwatch a disservice by spreading this misinformation. _ALSO, all you have to do is hold TAB and you can SEE what the other team has! If they switch characters after dying YOU CAN IMMEDIATELY SEE IT._

toffeebomb I'm not sure if you've ever played a game but most popular esports titles involve quite a bit of movement. MOBA's probably have the least and people are still doing a ton of positioning in that. Rocket League is at the complete other end of the scale being pretty much all about movement. Regardless when you're playing those games even if you aren't physically moving in reality, you're still moving and you're gonna be doing the same things with your brain as you do when you are moving IRL. You're still thinking about the movement as you would real movement. Not to mention that all of these games are incredibly fast paced, again Rocket League is probably the fastest and if you play that game you will know how long a second is in that game. So since you're moving and doing it fast dance music makes sense since it is essentially designed for the same purpose. Hell just go listen to the Rocket League soundtrack, it is pretty much just late 00s dance music. Similarly Eurobeat, which was originally made as club music in the 90s became the signature of Initial D, which is a racing game (there's a bit more to it).

Both splatoon and splatoon 2 have really great tracks in multiple different styles (from separate in-game "bands") for their multiplayer matches. Yes, they both have a singleplayer campaign, but the music in each mode is actually unique to that mode, with each level of the singleplayer having an assigned track, and each multiplayer match getting a random song from the list. Even the dlc in Splatoon 2 has its own unique tracks from the rest of the game, following the same formula as the normal singleplayer.

This video is a bit old for this, as it was just starting, but Splatoon has a great soundtrack and how to deal with music. Splatoon has in game bands, and the music on a map can be seen as officially playing during a match diegetically. The game has a lot of tracks, and will pick one per match. Because they are in game bands with their own styles, there are a variety of music styles involved, and the same song doesn’t play over and over. Some matches are strictly timed 3 minute affairs, and those play a “1 minute left” song that has been consistent between games in melody, but remixed by different bands. And the modes that last longer (and have knockout conditions that make end times more unpredictable), they wrong the songs to be very repeatable, like all good video game music. It’s the best solution I’ve seen to this, and is one game I’ve seen a lot of streamers just leave game music on for. Splatoon music is treated as part of the world, so it feels weird to play Splatoon without it.

Heroes of the Storm had a ridiculously good soundtrack. Not only were they alone just really really good tracks, but they had starting sections that tended to last as long as warmup phase so they fit cinematically. Alongside that, for objectives they soundtrack would actually change to a different track to indicate that shit is going down, which really works for a MOBA.

"What was the last eSport you remember having a good soundtrack?" You kinda answered your own question: Quake, Unreal Tournament... The games that did it best didn't care about the "events" in multiplayer games. Just played the awesome music (depending on the map) on a loop. If the music was any good, it got you pumped for the fight. UT streamers and pro player often leave the in-game music on, because it is simply too good to give up on. A good way of event based music would be motherfockin Payday 2. Not an eSport game, but it is never a silent game. There's always some music played, whether you're sneaking around, or going loud during an assault. But most importantly: it gets you pumped for the fight.

I think Left4Dead has done this better than many. There's distinctive theme for every Infected and those themes can be heard whenever those creatures are somewhere. Also the the main theme is used very nicely throughout the game from menus to the maps. For example when you're deep in the south, zombie horde is cued with with banjo version of the main theme or if you're at the amusement park, circus themed adaptation is used. Of course gameplay in games like Overwatch is a bit different, but I don't see why these kind of solutions wouldn't work if the musical cues are done fittingly. I really enjoy your videos! Keep up the good work!! :)

I rarely ever mute music in games, even in multiplayer games. Even though I rarely actually take active notice of the music in games like league and dota, it becomes a part of the experience. Playing music not intended for the game on top of it takes me out of the experience and leads me to playing badly, and muting it leaves a feeling of something missing. I don't really get people that do replace game music, music is such a strong part of memory that it's just unnatural to try to disjoint them, to me I often think of areas and their music as one in the same.

Fine. The real best example I've got is from an intense puzzle game on the Super Nintendo called Tetris Attack. Tetris Attack doesn't really have anything to do with actual tetris. Instead of falling blocks of different shapes, you've got rising rows of different colored blocks with the goal of eliminating those rows before they hit the top. You can do that by lining up 3 or more blocks of the same color, causing them to be eliminated. Part of the central appeal of Tetris Attack is that the game is competitive. You need to keep going until your opponent fails. To complicate things, each player can drop huge blocks on their opponent by matching 4 or more, or by lining up a string of combos. The musicality of the game has several elements. Each character in the game has a stage associated with them with its own music (and the score is just fantastic). Each character also has a sound effect for when they make a combo or long string of blocks. There is also a dramatic announcement for when the blocks actually fall, with more flair for a larger block (made with longer strings of combos). The block lands with a thud and produces an anxiety-inducing sound effect when the player manages to destroy it. Most dramatically, when either players' stack of blocks rises to a dangerous level, the music shifts to a faster paced track. The audio cues combine to create an atmosphere of increasing anxiety and tenseness as the game proceeds and becomes more intense. Every time you make a good move, you can hear it and have a moment to relish the pain about to be inflicted on your opponent. However, you can simultaneously hear what is about to come at you. The time delay between the warning of the opponents moves and the actual dramatic flair of the dropping obstacle presents a moment of dread. If the opponent is good, you may not know how big the problem is about to be and are forced to anxiously wait until it appears before you and forces you to confront it. The moment the music shifts, there's an immediate feeling that comes with it. If you have been dominating, it's a feeling of satisfaction, of being able to force your opponent closer and closer to submission. If it is an intense game, there is a feeling of panic as you take a moment to take stock of whether you are in a moment of crisis, or your opponent. When it's you who is in trouble, you can feel that fast paced music making your heart beat race ever faster as you try and manage the split seconds you have between failure and survival. And the moment when somebody loses, the music cuts out, creating a sudden release of tension, either the gut wrenching feeling of loss, or the sudden relief and happiness of victory.

@@noivern1380 yeah, in Ultimate you better be ready to move when you hear "Arsene" or "DORIYAH!"

That’s a fair point! With how many songs are in ultimate, assuming a player puts in the effort to customize it, they should never get tired of the music. A key difference though, is that with the exception of a few songs (like mario bros playing the “time running out” effect on the last stock), the music doesn’t always match the game.

Both are necessary, one for announcing when a member on your team has ulted and one for when an enemy team member has ulted. The difference between your teams zarya grav-ing and the enemy teams zarya grav-ing is the difference between a won fight and a lost fight. Also (i am pretty sure) all characters only have 2 except junkrat.

Both Starcraft 1 and 2 have phenomenal soundtracks, IMO. That being said, most of it comes through in the single player and some of the more memorable themes from the second game's campaign aren't in the multiplayer. Too bad.

I was going to bring that up an suggest simply having a varied, quality soundtrack that has a good groove that helps it melt into the experience is probably the best answer, but I also remembered how ironically I eventually muted it and played my own music library on random (it did have the ut )

Hmm, but the wrong button on my phone and can't edit. Thanks Obama. Point is: Short of having 100+ unique tracks, I think once you play a game long enough even the best stuff gets muted just for sake of sanity.

I guess Twitch streamers are playing games with random music playlist because they are not too immersed in the game anyway while interacting with chat or doing some random stuff. They know that people who come to watch won't hear game's soundtrack enough to enjoy it so they put some more melodic music in the background. There are some instances where the stream looks a bit different. It's more chilled and the streamer don't talk too much so people can enjoy not only the visuals but also the sound. It's prominent in the games like Dead by daylight where music and sounds are building tension.

3DMega At the beginning of a match, it plays a short clip of two themes that I can't remember the names of, and at the end it plays a short clip of the main theme. In MvM, the main MvM theme plays in various remixes 10 seconds before the round starts.

3DMega Yeah it's pretty much only in menus, but that's sorta where it belongs. I don't remember MAG being a "competitive shooter," but I remember to this day how it felt and sounded because of how much I loved that game, especially the sound design. Specifically, I remember playing on my buddies PS3 while he watched, all I could hear was the cacophony of war, and then I managed to mow down an enemy squad with my LMG, and I heard a soft guitar riff start, that was quickly amplified and accompanied by the pounding of drums. This amazing instrumental rock music served only to pump me up, and my friend remarked, "Damn dude, you got the rock music to play, you are kicking some ass!" I don't know what it was about this experience that cemented it in my memories, but I know that this is a great example of using music in a multiplayer environment.

I NEVER mute the game I'm playing. It honestly makes it so hard for me to concentrate when I have something else playing in the background, also I WANT to hear what the the game can offer me musically, as I love game music. It seriously pisses me off anytime I see(or hear) someone mute the game they're playing and play their music over it.

Killer Instinct remake on X-Box has an AMAZING soundtrack that changes to what is happening between the two players in a fighting game. If both players just do nothing, the music mellows out but if a combo is starts to amp up. As someone is closer to winning, the music dramatically change. The music and sound also helps clues you in to when you can break a combo
