What a splendid and strange combination at the same time! Very hot Bechet music with real cabaret scenes, Dresde beauty Harvey and Willy Fritsch, the absolute personification of the charm of the Weimar years!

Black and white film: great back then, even in the U.S. Black and White performers? Never back then in the U.S. Thank you for this gorgeous post.

The two first minutes are simply SEN-SA-TIO-NAL, and the rest of the music heard here conveys also an unmistakable taste of these days.

Wonderful clip, thanks. It's far less racist than the horrible prejudice African-Americans had to deal with in their own country in the 20s and 30s. No American movie of the time would have shown a nightclub with a mixed black and white clientele. Black American performers were amazed at the respect they were treated with in pre-WW II Europe.

Well, there is at least Belle of the Nineties, where in 1934 Duke Ellington's band backed Mae West, who was married to an African-American husband and was so popular that she could command them working together. In the uncut versions there is even more of them together.

Great clip. Bachet was very good at the continental-viennese-schmaltz and played it like an angel. Look out for a recording of him playing 'Song of Songs' You still find some traditional bands in the UK (with multi-reed frontlines) play some of these sweeter and less hot items. Thanks so much for posting this!

! Was hier an internationalem Austausch stattfindet ist wunderschön.

Wonderful historical artifact. I can see why the Nazis had a collective stroke over this sort of thing. Though I wonder how many of them secretly patronized the same club.

The Nazis had their own jazz orchestra called "Charlie and his Orchestra", which is odd considering they are accused of hating jazz and 'degenerate' art

Well, I once saw a photograph of Friedrich Holländer just dressed up like the band members in this movie and his face was black. Is he by any chance the bandleader (you see him most of the time from behind) in this clip. Or was what I saw just a publicity still?
