@theguywithone

@@pacmech100 If you look at his wikipedia. You're right for the first WHA. After being pushed back from June 2, a WHA draft took place on July 18, 2004 [1] in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Future superstar Sidney Crosby was the first pick; he turned down the league's three-year, $7.5 million offer. By August, however, things began to unravel: the WHA pulled the Quebec franchise[2] and Toronto, unable to find an arena, dropped out soon afterwards. The Florida-based franchise, apparently headed for Miami, then Jacksonville and finally Orlando, quietly expired. By September, the new WHA was down to four teams and had pushed its debut back to November.[3] By October, Dallas had folded and an announced "restructuring" never took place.[4]

Funny how you didn’t mention all the non calls the NHL referees failed to call penalties on a lot of the other NHL players who abused and hurt him. A lot of them gave him head shots that is the reason he had multiple concussions and played less games than Ovi. I also found it interesting when you didn’t comment on Ovi’s dirty hit on him in the playoff series against the Washington Capitals.

No doubt, Crosby is an offensive asset, but his +/- is 95th this season; thus, he can't be deemed as one of the best overall hockey players. He is currently 58th on all time list with +/- and he is going on 19 years. Compare to Bobby Orr with a +/- of 582 playing half as many years and as a defenseman. No comparison. If you go by points he is 12th, not in top ten.

+/- is a meaningless stat. And point totals cannot be compared when they are different eras. The rules and overall skill level are different. Look at defense. Defensemen don't just stand in front of their net now, they actually use finess and speed to win puck battles. Back then, if you were big and stood ok the right spot you were contributing defensively. We refer to the exact same type of players today as pylons. Gretzky is the goat because his skill level evolved the game. Crosby was the best in a game that has already evolved. Athletes today are a totally different beast than back then.
