It amazes me how some of you judge this guy's masterful playing. Just becasue he honors Jerry and Chet doesn't mean he has to play stylistically like them. For God's sake, the guy is playing like nobody's business AND having the time of his life having fun doing it. "Lacks the delicacy of Chet..." Have you heard all of Tommy's music? He is in complete command of every aspect of his playing. Go Tommy!

Right on Larry . Nothing comes out of Tommy's guitar That he doesn't want to come out of it . There are a lot of really fine players out there . And all of them are amazed when they hear Tommy play . Brent Mason , Richard Smith , Doyle Dykes , Chet , Eric Clampton , Les Paul ,Thom Bresh . I could go on and on .

Everyone fancies themselves as being discerning, the mistake they make is in being narrow about it, as if their perspective defines what is 'the best'...if you are a genuine lover of music, and appreciate skillful playing you don't indulge in this silly and childish 'who is the best' game!

Thanks for the refreshing comment. I've been playing since the early 70s and too worshiped at the alter of Chet Atkins (and all the favs of the day..Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, et all). I too thought of Tommy as a hot-dogging show-boat. THEN, a funny thing happened...I saw this clip of a Ted Talk where he explains his shows, techniques and history, plus pays immense respect to Chet, then demonstrates. However, it was at the end where he did a reading about WHY he does these things, and how he feels about we the fans. Great gratitude and a shout of inspiration at the end. I did a complete flip. There's nothing to hate about this brother! He deserves all he gets. Enjoy the ride now, and talk about it later on with your grand kids! kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3-tpoF5oLWZrpI

Yep, he has played since he was 4 years old I believe and practically lives music. His technique is fearsome but it is his feel with sometimes such technical music which takes my breath away. The way he articulates melodies is wonderful. Although I am not religious myself it seems that Christianity has helped a lot and given him an even greater drive in life and got him out of his dark period so those who complain about the fact he got into Christianity, without it we might not have him today.

Anyone who plays knows this man is doing the impossible and making it look like a walk in the park. There is no one better because they couldn't be. He is a Guitar God and best of all he never shows that he take himself seriously. A hallmark of a great performer. His entire focus is on pleasing his audience. Thos three are/where a true fellowship of guitar excellence spanning generations, irrespective of one's favorite musical genre or era. Rest easy, Jerry. I just know Chet and Jerry are up there jamming in heaven, their advanced ages no longer hindering to their playing, alongside other departed musical legends they admired. For example: WC Handy, Jimmie Rogers, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Gene Autry, Bob Wills, Roy Acuff, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Merle Travis, Lenny Breau and certainly the recently departed Eddie Van Halen. When you get there Eddie, say hello to John Lennon and George Harrison for me, okay?

So many TE fans here I thought I would add some thoughts. I first saw Tommy and Phil play at a tiny dim sleazy wine bar in DeeWhy in 1977. I was blown away back then. He hasn’t changed much, his base repertoire is as sharp today as it was when he was 25 (and already only 21 years into his professional career)!

If only people knew how hard it is to play an acoustic guitar even half as good as this, would probably give up even trying...

The only people who don't like this music are still living at home with their mommies and they are working down at the broom factory and still sucking their thumbs
