It amazes me how some of you judge this guy's masterful playing. Just becasue he honors Jerry and Chet doesn't mean he has to play stylistically like them. For God's sake, the guy is playing like nobody's business AND having the time of his life having fun doing it. "Lacks the delicacy of Chet..." Have you heard all of Tommy's music? He is in complete command of every aspect of his playing. Go Tommy!

Right on Larry . Nothing comes out of Tommy's guitar That he doesn't want to come out of it . There are a lot of really fine players out there . And all of them are amazed when they hear Tommy play . Brent Mason , Richard Smith , Doyle Dykes , Chet , Eric Clampton , Les Paul ,Thom Bresh . I could go on and on .

Everyone fancies themselves as being discerning, the mistake they make is in being narrow about it, as if their perspective defines what is 'the best'...if you are a genuine lover of music, and appreciate skillful playing you don't indulge in this silly and childish 'who is the best' game!

Thanks for the refreshing comment. I've been playing since the early 70s and too worshiped at the alter of Chet Atkins (and all the favs of the day..Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, et all). I too thought of Tommy as a hot-dogging show-boat. THEN, a funny thing happened...I saw this clip of a Ted Talk where he explains his shows, techniques and history, plus pays immense respect to Chet, then demonstrates. However, it was at the end where he did a reading about WHY he does these things, and how he feels about we the fans. Great gratitude and a shout of inspiration at the end. I did a complete flip. There's nothing to hate about this brother! He deserves all he gets. Enjoy the ride now, and talk about it later on with your grand kids! kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3-tpoF5oLWZrpI

Yep, he has played since he was 4 years old I believe and practically lives music. His technique is fearsome but it is his feel with sometimes such technical music which takes my breath away. The way he articulates melodies is wonderful. Although I am not religious myself it seems that Christianity has helped a lot and given him an even greater drive in life and got him out of his dark period so those who complain about the fact he got into Christianity, without it we might not have him today.

Anyone who plays knows this man is doing the impossible and making it look like a walk in the park. There is no one better because they couldn't be. He is a Guitar God and best of all he never shows that he take himself seriously. A hallmark of a great performer. His entire focus is on pleasing his audience. If they are not happy, then he feels he failed. So there is nothing but gasps, smiles, laughter and amazement. Devoid of "hip" and no hint of politics! The pinnacle of performance art!

At his concert here in Christchurch, after he'd played, loved, and signed my 47 year old Maton 12-string I had a front row seat nearly centre stage. At one part of the concert I called out "You're going to have to slow down Tommy - I CAN'T HEAR THAT FAST!!" which brought cheers and laughter from the whole audience, and a huge laugh from him!! He manages to play these songs articulated very cleanly and masterfully and the heart and soul of music shines bright. I am a player who has worked to be able to play a bit of Jerry and Chet. Tommy makes this complex and challenging music appear easy to play. I can assure anyone who isn't a guitarist it isn't anything like easy to play at all! I give praise where it is richly deserved.

Nobody can outdo Tommy in my opinion. He can "knock-off" anybody, I am sure of it. Hell, he "bested" Chet Atkins. But nobody is going to best Tommy. There is an innate, "God-given" talent there backed-up by 57 years of intense playing. I saw him live here in Vegas in a small venue and he is the real deal, no doubt about it. He FEELS everything he plays more than any other guitarist I have ever seen. The PASSION for the instrument is unequaled...Tommy was born to play the guitar.

I'm delighted to add the six-thousand and first like for Tommy Emmanuel's tribute medley for Chet Atkins and the recently departed Jerry Reed. Thos three are/where a true fellowship of guitar excellence spanning generations, irrespective of one's favorite musical genre or era. Rest easy, Jerry. I just know Chet and Jerry are up there jamming in heaven, their advanced ages no longer hindering to their playing, alongside other departed musical legends they admired. For example: WC Handy, Jimmie Rogers, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Gene Autry, Bob Wills, Roy Acuff, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Merle Travis, Lenny Breau and certainly the recently departed Eddie Van Halen. When you get there Eddie, say hello to John Lennon and George Harrison for me, okay?

I love the face Tommy gives after he completes a cool sounding lick, his expression is priceless and if put into words " yeahhhh, how badass am I now!!?"

Alexander Helton And this is exactly what I don't like about Tommy Emmanuel. He's a great player and I've heard a true gentleman yet the mugging to the crowd is cheesy. None of those licks he plays feel difficult to him but he knows people like the reaction.

I think it's different with him. He appreciates guitar playing at it's most fundamental. So when something sounds good he loves it when the crowd appreciates it too. I believe he's giving the crowd a look to see if people out there appreciate it like him. I feel it has very little ego to it.

Well that is the record for most times I’ve shaken my head in disbelief in 10 mins !!! What a masterful performance ! I saw him years back and met him afterwards and we spoke about Chet, he is a gentleman and a true master of the guitar.

What can I say? The guy is frickin' amazing. I practice 30 hours a week, but I don't think I'll ever get that good. I think Tommy has a special gift.

Holy shit, what a performance. I love Tommy's work, and my life's ambition is to meet him. Missed an opportunity when he was on locally on the same day I was at a Chris Newman gig, and chatting to Chris early on, he jokingly suggested cancelling the gig, and driving to Kendal to see Tommy instead.

I heard Chet, for the first time I, I was fascinated! Bought my first LP! don't know how he played. Tried to copy but failed. That's was when I was 16! I am 80 now! With the aid of modern h/p was I able to log on to sites which explains how he was able to play like that! I still have my guitar, it's a biginer lesson. Now I know! !

So many TE fans here I thought I would add some thoughts. I first saw Tommy and Phil play at a tiny dim sleazy wine bar in DeeWhy in 1977. I was blown away back then. He hasn’t changed much, his base repertoire is as sharp today as it was when he was 25 (and already only 21 years into his professional career)!
