From 1987, via a now defunct TV station and my VHS tape, Jerry Douglas joins Hot Rize on Tim O'Brien's "Walk the Way the Wind Blows." Every time I watch this, I marvel at the ease of Tim's delivery, and how many notes he can use and bend for one word, and sound so good I don't want to hear anyone else sing it.

That's the way it's done, son! When Nick came in on the tenor part, I didn't have any room left for more goosebumps!

He has a very strong voice...he could've backed off another 6 inches to a foot ....hehe....love his note selection on the line "I gotta do some thinkin'" great stuff. I moved to Nashville in '89 and I went to see O'Brien every chance I could ....great days in TwangTown.

Thanks. A good friend of mine introduced me to Hot Rize in 1993. He recently passed away and I still remember him handing me that cassette tape when I was about to go abroad. He wanted me to take a little of Americana with me. Thanks for posting this.

sjk: You're welcome. I wished the video quality were better, but they sounded so good I could not just sit on it and not share with the world, so I spent hours playing with filters until I got what you see here. I wish my effort always turned out so well. You can see more of Tim in concert, recorded live by my own hand from just in front of the stage, at kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYjbXnqMnbCNrck

Ahh, the memories! A dear departed friend of mine introduced me to this song around 1995/96 as he played this on his guitar at a rather infamous local's joint in the hills of South Carolina. Dear Greg passed away early 2000's at barely 60 years of age. He also played 'Bringing Mary Home' on his guitar. That locals joint--called Bob's Place--was featured on the front page of Time magazine to show G. W. Bush's support base for the 2000 election. RIP Greg!

This was always a great Hot Rize signature trick - having Tim switch parts on the chorus. You hardly realize that it happened.

I heard this music daily, when I was growing up (not always this band, or this song). Seeing this video for the first time, I now realize Hot Rize were the Darlin' family in real life. 😃

This song is great on so many levels. I have it on two different cd's and on vhs tape. It has been one of my favorite songs for a long, long time. Adding Jerry Douglas to the mix just makes it that much better. When he watches this, he must think, "I can't believe I was ever that young or that skinny!" -- one of the videos around. Thanks for posting.

+Dennis Galloway Oh, yeah! It's my favorite instrument, especially when played in the style of Pete Kirby (aka Cousin Oswald), which both Rob Ickes and Brent Burke have shown me personally that they can do very well. Please watch this video to hear my favorite sound from the banjo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIO5l6VtqbWSrpY I asked Aaron McDaris if there was a musician's term for this style, and he said, "No, that's just pickin'."
