Conclusion of the first act of "Siegfried," with Siegfried Jerusalem in the title role and Heinz Zednik as Mime. James Levine leads the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in this 1990 production directed by Otto Schenk.

The sheer manliness of this scene made me fall in rapture with the Ring cycle, and helped make Siegfried my favorite opera. Epic!
@theresaq83214 жыл бұрын
Except, he wasn't supposed to be manly at this point! He was supposed to be an enthusiastic man-boy! That's why I like the Jay Hunter Morris depiction better.
@alleviation912 жыл бұрын
@@theresaq8321 He's the son of half-gods. Man-boy for him is every other man's "manly." Further, his maturation doesn't really happen until Gottar, and "more mature," doesn't necessarily imply a stronger sound. The orchestra and score being unrelentingly loud implies that Wagner desired a hefty voice in the role, regardless of Siegfried's actual state. And Jay-Hunter Morris' voice is too small live, and often gets swamped by the orchestra.

@ColonelFredPuntridge2 жыл бұрын
@@Mase251 One of the best, certainly. Gerhard Stolze was equally good (IMHO), especially as Mime in the studio recording conducted by Solti. Erwin Wohlfahrt is also fantastic in the role, on the Böhm performance from Bayreuth 1966. For Loge, there was, in the 1940s, a heldentenor with creepy-tenor capability who is my very favorite Loge. His name was Julius Pölzer. He's on the recording conducted by Rudolf Moralt. With Ferdinand Frantz, Herbert Alsen, and Rosette Anday.

He was one of the very very few modern singers who can sing and act the part properly. No shortage of singers who look the part but can't sing it...

Siegfried is certainly one of the parts that make the Ring Cycle so infamously difficult. Siegfried is such an intense role, that people who can truly pull it off are pretty rare.

Maestro Jerusalem is the greatest overall interpreter of this extremely demanding part. We are all lucky that this Met performance is available in high quality video and audio.

This series has a stupid story. Moronic lines. The character development was absurd. But my god, it had maybe the best music ever written. Any modern movie soundtrack from Miklos Rozsa to John Williams draws its roots from the Ring Cycle.
