The industry “standards” are both 16mm and 28mm. I have their 16mm Extreme as I’m not planning on putting several tons on my table, though I could put over two, if I were crazy enough to do that. It’s also the new inch series. The problem with 22mm is that it’s not “standard”, so you can’t find fixtures from anyone other than Sigmund. There are other companies that make very useful fixtures in 16 and 28mm that you can’t use here. WD-40 doesn’t help with BBs. I don’t like the 28mm for small shops. The 4 inch spacing makes it difficult to build smaller complex products because you can’t get the fixtures to fit properly. These are really made for building very large, heavy parts. If you want something even heavier, buy an Acorn.

The table in the video is a Siegmund System 22 Metric table and is really a Metric Indexing table and not a welding table in practice. The difference being an indexing table is used to setup (index) the weldment cut-list part assembly as per the print and once the parts are in the proper place (using indexing fixtures and locators) they are tack welded in a sequence that minimizes distortion. After which the weldment is moved to a welding area (table, or grid support) and final welded. It is not cost effective or safe (the welder may damage the table if a newbie and there are usually more than one working on the piece at the same time which would put a lot of heat into the table) to complete welds on the indexing table. At most large shops (producing many of the same type of weldment) that can afford indexing table systems, you will see a senior fabricator setup the table(s) and create the fixturing, place the cut-list parts in the proper position, orientation and fit, then tack weld them in a certain sequence (sequence may even be described on the print notes). After which the weldment is final welded in a different area of the shop and when completed, inspected and verified against the print. The shop has to decide on using a metric or imperial indexing system and what hole size is needed. The highest density of holes from Siegmund is actually the smallest hole size system which is 16mm. The imperial 16mm system has holes on a 2 inch grid, with the grid marked in inches. You can set up and tack weld metric weldments on imperial tables, and imperial weldments on metric tables. The fixtures usually have fixed holes and slotted holes so what they really do is to keep the assembly square rather than using the table to measure something. The real reason the table has sides and an internal grid support system is to keep the table within its advertised flatness specification. It is an added bonus that you can use the sides for a mini indexing surface or to allow bolting tables together. To make a flat indexing table you would really want to have it cast out of grey cast iron and then machined. I don't really know what Siegmund does at the factory, but the tables come complete with the table and four legs. Needless to say, the indexing tables are very heavy. If you try to make a flat surface out of a plate without sides it is usually not flat. Even Siegmund indexing carts are not flat (as compared to the tables). It is relatively easy to distort a flat plate unless there is a supporting structure which is flat.

7/8 or 5/8 it depends on what you’re needs are. Just realize there are limited accessories compared to the series 28 products

the angle blocks that you see? - they are just cold rolled mild steel usually

What do the different hole diameters on different table models mean? Why don't they use same diameters on all tables?

because large factories with large heavy weldments will use the very large diameter holes and clamps - smaller home/shop tables will use the smaller 16mm diameter holes and clamps, also to reduce the purchase price for small shops
