11:55 The TIE was very important. The Imperial star destroyers had very little anti-fighter defenses. Putting all it's power into anti-ship batteries so it relied on the TIE fighters to protect them. That's part of why they are so short ranged as they were never supposed to be far from their carriers. Rebel ships included many more point defense systems and were generally better armored so they didn't rely on fighter protection as much. That meant their fighters were tasked with more offensive roles since the firepower of most rebel ships was rather low.

Allen, in the lore, the TIE Interceptors have it being superior to an X-Wing in every way but shielding. Its actually so powerful that it kills B-Wings with a single shot, so I don't know how only the Tie-Defender is the true first counter to an X-Wing? The lore has TIE Interceptors and Fighters being super easy to mod, probably so they could save money and allow elite Squadrons to mount more advanced systems, like Khyber drives, shields, beam weapons and so on. So I would include that as an important attribute.
@andyb16534 жыл бұрын
Overall performance, yes the TIE Interceptor is better, But the X-Wing still has 3 distinct advantages: -Hyperdrive -Deflector Shields -Warhead launchers The TIE Defender has all of these, is even faster than the TIE Interceptor, and has ion cannons to boot. The TIE Interceptor beats the X-Wing in several categories, but the TIE Defender just beats the X-Wing outright.
@lancer7374 жыл бұрын
@@andyb1653 All those things can easily be mounted to a TIE Interceptor though with no Ill effect on energy output, on top of that they can be mounted with beam weapons like full fledged tactical jammers, tractor beams and so on. @Devenix85274 жыл бұрын
You forget that the Interceptor still had no hyperdrive; despite allegedly being better than the X-Wing (Imperial propaganda at its finest) the Interceptor was still a short ranged fighter with no shields, life support, usually no secondary weapons, large profile due to the wings (still smaller than a standard TIE), and no hyperdrive to chase down Rebel fighters. The Defender, however, DID have a hyperdrive, shields, and secondary weapons. That's how it's the true counter to the X-Wings.

The ARC 170 design is actually a historical comparison. Just as the Star Wars was inspired by the Battle of Britain and especially some movies, the turreted fighter was an idea that some people toyed with, including Winston Churchill. He supported an idea where a fighter would be equipped with a turret, and aircombat would look like two battleships sailing side by side and hammering each other until one or the other sank. Some planes were produced, and indeed, proved to be slow, heavy, cumbersome and having way too little firepower, taking massive losses in the war. Luckily, other models with more sensible design were also being developed, monoplane, single pilot craft with fixed forward armament and concentrating on speed and maneuverability: the Hurricane and the Spitfire, the real life X and A wings. You can even see it in the design, the long nose of the X-wing mimicking the equally long nose of the Spitfire, housing first the hugely powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, and later the monstrous Rolls-Royce Griffon exceeding over 2000 hp.

The age old question, which pilots were best? Rebels in the X-Wings or Imperials in their TIE's? Rebel pilots could become to dependant on the X-Wings shields in a dogfight whereas the Imperial pilot had to live on his skill and wits as one shot could kill him. This is probably why the best Rebel pilots were Imperial defectors who had been trained and flown TIE fighters. They were a meld of the two best qualities, instinctive piloting in a starfighter with a shield :)
@cidballcidball80304 жыл бұрын

Under heavy fire, she was careful to make sure that her surviving pilots got in safely, under her cover. That frankly makes the whole thing alot more tragic, and Ahsoka alot cooler. She may have lost most of her squadron to her own ineptitude, but she wouldn't loose what few pilots she had left, even if it left her less protected. She took her losses VERY seriously, and was willing to risk her life to keep her troops alive. There are ALOT of much older Jedi you can't say that about.

that is a different point than people typically make Most only focus on high quality fighters vs low quality but high quantity. But putting the resources into capital ships and having the fighters serve less of a role is a completely different dynamic. It's the difference between having bombers take down the enemy capital ships and your capital ships haveing an advanced sheild that uses less energy and let's the power all go into poerfull guns and blowing up the enemy. Now taking out the sheilds make sence, because they aren't taking out yours without fighters. Oh yeah, the enemy can't make good fighters. At the time, the ties were the best fighters.

Assuming they can maintain their own population levels sufficient to actually man those ships properly (though they could rely on skeleton crews and their ancient droids to make do if their species numbers start to thin out in the huge scale of the war) Strategically speaking, the sheer overwhelming numbers of the Vong will overrun vast swathes of the Outer Rim. It must be remembered that when the Vong attacked the New Republic and Imperial Remnant, technology was far more derived and commonplace on far more inhabited worlds. The more systems the Vong have to fight over to capture, inevitably the higher their attrition rates in warfare will become. For this reason, in spite of inflicting absolutely grotesque casualties on the galaxy at large (over 365 _trillion_ beings, mostly civilians but also soldiers of course, died in the conflict they caused), they themselves were sustaining massive losses the closer they got to Coruscant. Every stride forward they took to the core, the more they lost. The Battle of Coruscant itself essentially broke the back of the Vong strategically (the war was far from over, but their losses had been so heavy that it kind of hampered them and weakened their strategic viability on the galactic stage - it was too dearly bought) I am explaining this because we have to recontextualise the conflict in a setting thousands of years earlier, when the Rakatan Infinite Empire was in tenure as the dominant power in the galaxy. However, do remember that the galaxy _back then_ was *far less explored* with far fewer colonised worlds - many of those discovered and colonised, being up and down ancient hyperspace lanes e.g. the Hydian Way and Parlemmian Trade Route. Essentially speaking, there were about 500 major planets in the heart of the galaxy with, as far as I can remember, major development. That said, the Rakatans could certainly travel around a lot more planets that this. Thousands, of course. Nevertheless, the point I'm making is that strategically speaking, the Rakatans would be present on far fewer worlds than say, the New Republicans and Imperial Remnants would be many thousands of years later. The galaxy was just, more primitive in general, even if the Rakatans technically had some technological feats (some, blatantly stolen from the Kwaa they overthrew) which was far ahead of it's time. The Starforge, while very impressive, essentially just siphons elements for material construction, out of stars. They feed on the stars and would need to move on if you think about it, eventually. Some Rakatan tech was well ahead of it's time - and yet, on the other hand, some Rakatans just swung metal blades and spears around. They'd be pretty evenly matched in melee with the Vong, I reckon, yet at range the Vong might begin to win through, due to superior and overwhelming numbers at particular points of contact/i.e. where the spearheads of the Vong invasion forces apply massive numerical pressure to a specific point. Overwhelming numbers, with high quality combat infantry and swarms of fighters. They are hard to stop. Rakatan force powered technology might also be of little concern to the Vong, as they are unholy monsters that aren't connected to the Force anyway, extragalactic. It is a problem the Jedi discovered when dealing with them in combat. Force powers aren't directly very effective against them (though I suppose a Jedi could pick up a boulder with the force and drop it on a Vong warrior lol indirect use of force powers to cause fatalities etc) In conclusion, I think that the *decisive factor* would be the Starforge/or perhaps the Rakatans would realise that this is what they were relying on to stay in the fight as their losses mounted, and they began to need new fleets, and fast. I can imagine the Rakatans being pretty arrogant about the Vong, and the Vong in turn would despise the Rakatans - however, the Vong would not just be fighting the Rakatan species. They'd be running into *all* of the species in the galaxy (whether independent of the Rakatans or their slaves at that time) e.g. many humans were slaves of the Rakatans at this time, yet I think that they'd be used as slave soldiers. During the US Civil War, even the Confederates decided to arm Black soldiers to fight the increasingly victorious Union armies (itself, forming regiments of black soldiers, some of whom being former slaves) This shows the sheer desperation of a faction that, previously, had been resentful of even thinking of arming it's slaves, because the slavers/plantation owners were scared of "putting a gun in their hands". Of course, that American history based example, is not entirely comparable to the Rakatans, yet it illustrates a point - the Rakatans would use slave armies of humans and other humanoids, hurling them with basic weaponry at the Vong if it slowed them down for an extra day or two. The evil Rakatans wouldn't care would they? If they were getting depleted enough numerically themselves, they'd do it. They'd probably bolster crew numbers on the Rakatan warships, and be used as slave crews and marines to defend the ship against the inevitable Vong boarders. The Rakatans would concentrate most of their strategic efforts in deflecting the Vong from their sacred homeworld, *Lehon* sometimes called Rakata/Rakata Prime. Depending on where the Vong appeared in the galaxy (at which point in the vastness of the broad Outer Rim) first, well that could turn out in many different ways. If the Vong appeared on the exact diametric opposite end of the galaxy from Lehon, then the Rakatans would obviously have more time to retaliate and prepare the defences of Lehon and all worlds they were dominant on, in between it and the invasion point) If the Vong (in their trillions) smash into the Outer Rim close to Lehon, itself in the Outer Rim, then what would probably happen is a sort of panicked response by the angry Rakatans, surging their reinforcements around the salient the Vong would inevitably punch in the galaxy. They'd fail in stopping the Vong in these actions, simply being overrun by the overwhelming Vong numbers on each battlefield. Shifting their strategy, realising their peril and the brutality of the Vong (which actually matched their own brutality in many regards - the Rakatan massacred, enslaved, tortured and even _ate_ their enemies; the Vong mostly just slaughtered and executed theirs, with outright bloodlust, rarely ever taking prisoners) Ramping up their aggressive retaliations, and more than happy to be absolutely merciless to the Vong, the Rakatans would begin to fight back very seriously. They'd be hurling their massed slave armies into the frontlines while using their own elite Rakatan forces to counterattack on the flanks of the Vong salients. If the Vong really find out about why the Rakatans seem to have endless fleets coming from a particular sector of the Outer Rim, their military juggernaut will haul itself towards that problem, and drive towards Lehon (if/when they learn about the Starforge there) Now, it wouldn't surprise me if the Rakatans sent forces out to defend new construction sites in the Outer Rim, to build *new Starforges* as we only ever saw one. I think they could try and build at least two or three more. How long they'd need to do it, however, I don't know. Their rudimentary looking yet surprisingly powerful droids, would be important in fighting back the Vong, as their own losses would hit the billions fast. They'd still have billions more of their own species in reserve, yet the anxiety would grow as entire Rakatan colony worlds would vanish off the face of the galaxy. Once the Vong zone in on Lehon and the Starforge, it all depends on the timing at that point; and the attrition rates. If the Vong have trillions of warriors left, they'll still probably win just because of overwhelming numbers. If they really needed to, they could crash one of their world ships or multiple dovin basal ships into the Starforge to literally either destroy it outright or ram it into the star of Lehon if that failed. The sacrifice would be deemed numerically acceptable to the Vong. Otherwise, they could just absolutely swarm the place with billions of coralskippers and over biological spacecraft. For the Rakatans, the Vong assault on Lehon/Rakata Prime would be their equivalent to the Battle of Coruscant. It would draw in all the available strength of the Rakatan Infinite Empire and they'd hurl all their might at the Vong in a brutal space and land battle. Holding their own for days, if not weeks, they might slowly begin to have to pull out of Lehon after sustaining catastrophic losses. The Vong might even prefer to try and slam asteroids or their own world ships into Lehon itself, in kamikaze style attacks. Were the Rakatans to fail to hold the Vong at their homeworld, it would likely be all over strategically speaking after that point. They _could_ defeat an invasion, at appalling cost, but once it was a known target and entity, the Vong would keep coming back - and if they'd established themselves with their terraforming on already-conquered-worlds, the Vong would perhaps begin to replace their own losses slowly, settling into worlds and reproducing for the first time. Depending on how long the war lasted (potentially decades) that might bare fruit for them. But the chances are, the war would be shorter and sharper, with massively gruesome battles in the short term, within a decade. If the Vong overrun Lehon, they might be able to root out the Rakatans (whom also liked to terraform worlds) in a bloody campaign of outright genocide (just like they tried with the New Republic, Jedi and Imperial Remnant in the legends material) [1/2]

[2/2] If the Vong pushed the Rakatans into the Mid Rim, and then the Core Worlds, the war would drag out as the Rakatans tried to maintain their hyperspace lanes. However, as I have stated, if the Starforge is reproduced then things might change dramatically. The Starforges would crank out droid armies to supplement the Rakatan's dwindling numbers (and the falling numbers of their slave units) to keep the ships in operation (which the Starforges would also produce) The war would, as with most comparisons involving the numerically insane Yuuzhaan Vong, turn into an attrition warfare nightmare. Number crunching, battles of annihilation - all or nothing misery over and over and over again. Even the ''winner'' would be so exhausted and bloodied, that it'd be a hollow victory, perhaps. *Final conclusions* - if the Vong win? Then that is the end of the galaxy as we know it. - if the Rakatans win? Then they'd perhaps be weak even for an armed slave uprising to overthrow them once and for all (though, if the Starforge/multiple Starforges survived up until that point, then that uprising would probably fail badly) It's like the Nazis VS Communists; whoever wins _nobody does_

How about the corporations that build droids? I don't understand just how old the R2 series is. What about the DUM series? what is the life expectancy of certain droids and how the builders put in planned obsolescence?

Soviet Russia wanted Pepsi to do business in Russia, but didn't have enough inernationally-recognized currency to seal the deal. So, they "bartered", and paid Pepsi in obsolete warships (Pepsi Co. later sold the ships for scrap to get paid). As a result, Pepsi Co. technically had the 9th largest navy in the world at the time. “arc 170 too heavy” - question, is the anti-inertia tech not able to make this of no consequence or only greatly reduce effective mass?
@Lightwolf_VR4 жыл бұрын
Remember, we're sci-fantasy here. Inertial compensators can prevent mass from feeling the effects of acceleration but not cancel it out.
@nonyabuisness66424 жыл бұрын
There is also the fact that they mainly just use the engines on the back. The fact that all the force that pushes it forward and makes turns comes from one point on the edge of the ship is going to greatly exaggerate the effect that little bit of extra mass gives

Two things: One: I don't see how the production of the Tie-Defender could have been THAT expensive, especially with all the development already done. Just look how many ships the Empire built, 25k Imperial Star Destoyers alone. Not to mention all those secret ships at Exagul, the work already underway to create Starkiller base, the construction of the Second Death Star, ect. I just don't see a lack of funding being an issue for these people. Two: I thought that the same people sell both fighters? Wasn't that one of the main points in The Last Jedi? One big military complex selling weapons to both sides for profit?
@Lightwolf_VR4 жыл бұрын
Ye olde cannon had the tie defender being chock full of experimental and high tech gadgets that they could make small enough through use of rare resources. Those same resources were being used up in the death star projects, while the budget went to capital and escort fleets, while the top pilots all were siphoned off to the 181st and similar "ace" propaganda squadrons. I have no idea how disney would justify anything here. The timeline is too packed and doesn't make sense in any way.

I still think the republics main starfighter should have been the A-wing. Small, fast, powerful.
@maudrysilvain59054 жыл бұрын
Bad opinion but I prefer Kuat system engineering starfighter because they are halfway of both doctrine. They are resillient craft with shield and hyperdrive possibility (with rings since they were too small to have a fully fledge hyperdrive system) but less resilient than Incom products But are also fast and nimble (the Eta-2 actis had TIE propulsion and so did the V-wings.) but are a little slower than TIE fighter And can be slightly modified (Skywalker Azure Angel and old palpy's elite V-Wings with both hyperdrive and concussion missiles launcher) but lesser customizable than CEC products. So to me they are a jack-of-all trades, master of none
