Interesting that you find Roman pottery with holes in the bottom. Here in the American southwest, a lot of ancient Native American pottery also have what are called 'kill holes' punctured in the bottoms. It is thought they did so for funerary use (placing over the head of the deceased) and that the hole allowed the soul to pass through.

Steve, that hole was punched out with a ball peen hammer or equivalent. That is why the hole is bigger inside where it and chips of material are blown out like the backside of a bullet impact. The other evidence is the clear 120 degree angles and the hexagon shape. It was perfectly punched out probably to use it for a plant when it wasn’t designed with drainage in mind.

@Irate Puffin 🔸️THANK YOU🔸️ for mentioning this! Not 20 seconds ago I was discussing this with my husband - retired from the camera business. (And the fact that the selfie stick throws a shadow). We go through this weekly because the invisible selfie stick obsesses me. My husband provides such helpful explanations as "I don't know. Maybe he edits it out." 🤡 "Must be the angle of the stick or something" 🤯 Yeah, thanks Mike. These explanations are very satisfying, and I won't discuss it any more. 😑

The bendy bottle brush thing looks like a brush used for commercial coffee pots used at cafes and restaurants. Here in the states a common company is Bunn that makes these coffee pots. The machines hold water . Each time you make a pot of coffee you add a measure of water and it runs through the machine. Every night your supposed to run the bendy brush thing up through the coffee machine to help keep it clear of hard water build up.
