Thank you for adding your experiments to the community. If some of the results seem inconsistent with theory or rules of thumb, there may be some good reasons for that. I think that the article "Why Ballisticians Get Grey" mirrored on LeverGuns can add some nuance. The individual gun's variance may be greater than the fundamental variance (theoretical). In particular, look at Speer's results for the 6" Colt Pythons. Assuming that these guns were pretty much as manufactured, and that the Speer employees were competent, then the range of speeds of this one cartridge in ostensively the same guns (make, model) is shocking. That a 3.9" barrel from an aftermarket manufacturer performed worse than a 3.7" barrel from Sig is not impossible. Indeed, a different 3.9" barrel from that same manufacturer might have performed significantly better, or worse. All we can do is add the data to the pile. The more data, the more likely we are to find the median truth.

I really like how scientific this is. Instead of saying shorter barrel sucks , not worth the comp. I think if you were to test this at longer ranges, you would see more of a correlation.
@guardianminifarm80052 жыл бұрын
Definitely giving some sense of perspective and a bit of data to a legitimate question in this area for decision making. However, this particular sample might produce more questions than answers. The 3.7" consistently provided the most velocity. There is obviously something there but it can't be a constant throughout the 9mm handgun arena. But the demonstration yields plenty of data points to consider. Thanks you all. Well done as always.

Although I'm not sure how many XL owners have done this - but both of my XL's have threaded barrels which gives them in effect a 4.25 inch barrel. perhaps at some point you could compare the XL with threaded barrel vs X-Macro. Since I routinely run the Macro lower with an LX slide/threaded barrel it would be good to quantify gains/losses when swapping uppers.
@GBGuns2 жыл бұрын
I have chrono'd a threaded XL barrel in the past for a magazine article. The particular barrel we had and five loads tested for that did not perform well, even got worse accuracy with it somehow.

@@GBGuns Do recall the brand of barrel as there are several. Mine are True Precision which I have seen chrono'd against same length barrels - it was an accurracy of upgrade barrels vs. stock artile - and they typically chrono'd the same or marginally better.

@@snoopywl8880 It's a combination of the two, we've put other slides on the X-Macro grip and while nicer than a smaller gun, it's not as soft as the compensated slide AND longer grip.

Watching a reloader test 300 blk and his exact same upper would cycle subs and not supers. He did a powder test in the next episode and found that was the problem. That was him knowing every variable down to the grain of powder. Imagine what WE buy off the shelf?!?

Yup, you get interesting results testing same ammo from different guns, or similar ammo from the same gun, that's why we couldn't willingly do this test with just one load and call it good, it's also a reason we do the What's For Dinner Test in pistols AND rifles.

@@GBGuns I think HumbleMarksman found something similar when he compared an XL with a PMM comp and PMM barrel to SIG’s Macro. I think the SIG barrels are surprisingly good.

Thanks for the comparison! I use the Liberty in my 320 XCompact, but just ordered a 365 axg legion and was wondering if that would be the ammo of choice with the shorter barrel and integrated “comp”. Wasn’t sure if that design would be picky with ammo like adding a comp to a bigger pistol can. I’m glad the Liberty ammo still performs well. I’m super curious to see how the recoil impulse is with that ammo compared to my little 320. I definitely like the way it shoots at the range.

Weird Science - how is it possible that the shorter barrel Sig 365 XL outperformed the slightly longer P320 Compact. It makes the P320 Compact obsolete unless you like carrying a bigger thicker pistol. Whatever dark magic Sig put into the 365 XL it’s coming out a winner. Thank you for taking the time to show us the numbers versus a swag approach. What I’m most curious about is the difference in felt recoil; is it that much different from pistol pistol?
@GBGuns2 жыл бұрын
The 3.9" barrel that we assume had something slightly out of spec (chamber sizing or bore diameter). As far as recoil difference, The compact is the most comfortable to shoot, the X-Macro has less muzzle flip thanks to a longer grip and the compensation than the regular XL. We've got a full comparison planned, just haven't been able to get to the range in a while. This video was filmed over a month ago.

Can the human body detect such minor deviations in energy when shot?
@GBGuns2 жыл бұрын
It might be the difference between, "ooh that hurts" and "aw %&*#! you shot me!" (joking). In all seriousness there doesn't seem to be much difference, just like when guys argue over 1/2" of penetration in gel. The reality remains however that it might be the difference between a one-shot stop and a failure to stop depending on where it hits, so erring on the higher side is a safer bet.

The cringe when I see you shooting into a pile of rocks for the chrono lol. It's been my experience that some manufacturers slightly undersize their 9mm barrels resulting in decreased velocity. My 4.25 m&p 2.0 and my Beretta 92x both gave me velocities lower than expected along with tumbling at distances past 50yds. If I had to own another sig it would be the p365xl, perfect size and great capacity.

I know what you're thinking, but I've been shooting at that spot for almost a decade and have yet to have anything come back at me. Steel targets on the other hand seem to always throw spall, even at 50 yards. I guess it's luck.
@buncha56512 жыл бұрын
I would prefer a pistol with barrel length to match the slide length. A slide mounted compensator on a 9mm is a gimmick. If a 9mm recoils too much for you get a 22lr.
@GBGuns2 жыл бұрын
Compensators aren't for recoil so much as they are for muzzle flip.
@jagpilotohio2 жыл бұрын
The reduction in muzzle flip is absolutely noticeable and worthwhile. It is far from a “gimmick”. I have a standard 365 with a Wilson combat grip and a macro slide and barrel on a WC grip and the reduction in muzzle flip is instantly noticeable when you shoot them back to back. You can get back on target faster with the macro slide firing quickly.

I think people with pistol compensators would be very surprised to see how much more disorienting the blast is without hearing protection; especially indoors. It isn’t simply a matter of dealing with the pain in favor of self defense - it can be a debilitating shock to the nervous system. In my opinion, an extra few milliseconds saved in follow-up shots isn’t worth the extra cost in dollars or potential bodily harm.
