This is our full, two section review of the SIG-Sauer MCX Spear Pistol, chambered for 7.62x51 (.308). In the first half, we briefly go over the NGSW program's history and explain why the 'X' in XM7 hasn't yet been dropped. Then we do a full range review of the civilian legal, semi-auto MCX Spear pistol; discussing things we like and some we don't. We even have a back-to-back firing comparison with its distant cousin from Switzerland, the SIG GMBH SG751 SOCOM SAPR!

Im not sure what exactly is going on behind the thinking of the XM7 program. I have no doubt that its a really good rifle, I just don't see how it makes sense to replace the M4 given its weight and the weight of the new ammo. The fighting load of each soldier will be dramatically reduced and I'm not sure how practical the new fire control optic will be in widespread use. I see it like the XM177, where certain special operators would use it to great effect, I just don't see how it could be successfully issued to all the Army divisions. Although, I imagine similar conversations were had about the M1 in the late 30s, so maybe I'm not forward thinking enough.

Rumors said the original charging handle was the left side one. Testers weren’t fond of the lack of back handle and asked a back handle as well for soldiers that were accustomed to AR15.

The rail on this thing is Ugly AF. Something about different size/shape slots going all different directions 🤮. And the price is absurd. No way this thing sees widespread adoption.

The recoil seems very violent and sharp. The M-14 seems far less painful to shoot. Is it as bad as a G-3 or lighter like a FAL or M-14?

SmallArmsSolution summed up the XM7 program as "section 8" of the US Army. The Spear is an oversized MCX for almost twice the price. But I guess they needed to recoup the prototype that St. John designed and was featured on the TFB channel a few years ago. I still want one, but in a different color (black) and not at the price of $4200.

I have the Sig Spear 13 inch 308 version and am waiting on the caliber conversion for the 6.8mm because I’m not dropping another 5K for the 6.8mm. The whole point of the weapon system is to have the 6.8mm. That being said if SHTF I’m grabbing my 14.5 M4A1 for general purpose or one of my 11.5 inch AR’s or my Mk18 for CQB. Obviously I and most people will choose 556 for weight, ammo capacity and availability among many things. I have M855A1 and that will pierce most armor if anyone is wearing any, which most people aren’t and if they are it’s not going to be level 4 in the majority of cases. I would say your chances of encountering someone with body armor capable of stopping M855A1 or even green tip are less than 1% so the need for 6.8mm for that or for engaging anyone past 400 yards will most likely not ever happen unless you are encountering our own military and even then it would have to be a special forces unit in which case your probably dead anyways. Rant complete!!

I was hyped when the XM5/XM7 was first adopted, two years ago, but now I think its too much gun. The .277 is the wrong caliber and the rifle itself is just too busy looking. Not a fan.

Here's the thing, it wasn't adopted 2 years ago; its not adopted even now. It won a trial in 2022 and was selected in 2023, but full adoption is still pending. We'll see how actual operational testing/use goes for it. Also if SIG can get its act together for mass-production?

Hey misha do you have a .308 galil? I wonder if you do, how you compare it to the Spear?
@misha5670
@misha5670 3 ай бұрын
Not really fair to the Galil. The ergos on it are just not up to a modern AR10 or MCX. Remember too that the optic mounts to the top cover, a part that has to be removed for cleaning, so while its plenty stable for field use, its not going to be target grade.
@purehate333
@purehate333 3 ай бұрын
Good points. I dig the .308 galil aesthetically and the fact it’s half the price. Oh and the iron sights are hard to beat. Great video btw, as usual, thanks
