The SIG P320 and SIG P226 are two of the most popular pistols on the market, and for good reason. Both pistols are well-made, reliable, and accurate. However, there are some key differences between the two pistols that may make one a better choice for you than the other.
Further, we compare and contrast the top end of each model: The SIG P320 AXG Legion versus the SIG P226 X-Five. We will discuss the features of each pistol, their performance, and their overall value. We will also provide our recommendations for which pistol is the best choice for different types of shooters.
Ultimately, the best way to decide which pistol is right for you is to try both of them out and see which one you prefer, but let us know what you think in the comments: P226 or P320?

Was issued an Sig P226 in 1997. Retired in January and looked back at the years with it. Estimate around 31K rounds through it. Not one malfunction except a cracked rim case I missed while loading magazine. 5k first year qualifying and 1k-1.3k yearly for mandatory qualifying and shooting on my own. Looks like it had rough life but the trigger had gotten so smooth over the years. Bought 3 new sigs(p320, 365, 365xl). Tried to like them but nay, loved my sig p226 so much. I bought a German made sig p228 as my carry and switch up with Kimber K6s revolver on my ankle. Love the feel and security of my thumb on the back of a hammer when holstering.

The p226 is probably the best stock pistol I've ever shot. It's not my favorite in terms of aesthetics, but if I need a sidearm to go to war, be reliable, and exceptionally accurate, the p226 is my unquestioned choice.

My buddies in the USMC say otherwise. Good friend spent 7 tours.. about 10 years total boots in Iraq and Afghanistan ( three Purple Hearts , 2 bronze stars , one silver star) said his unit had access to Berettas , Sigs , S&Ws ,Colts, and any other sidearm available and said eventually they were all carrying Glocks. Sigs in particular would choke on sand/dirt/mud. They called their Glocks “the rock crusher”because it would sound horrible and grind the dirt and sand , but they would always run in conditions that would choke other pistols , especially Sigs of all types

The m16, for example, is famous for that click sound it makes when it fails to fire due to poor maintenance. When I was active duty there were memes about it before memes existed. Proper maintenance is part of every rifleman's job. Now, I don't have 7 combat tours under my belt, just one, and zero purple hearts. One purple heart is an unfortunate but fortunate circumstance. But holy shit bro, 3 purple hearts?! Didn't they teach him how to duck in basic training? You have restored my faith in you, James! I carried a SIG P228 for 19 years as a duty handgun for plainclothes duty from 1990 to 2009. Prior to that I had carried a DA revolver for 15 years and Beretta 92FS for 2 years in uniform duty. It is just a compact version of the P226. I can tell you that it is still my favorite, and most trusted, double stack 9mm, and NOTHING has come along that would change my mind. Yet. So, between those two, the P226 would be my choice, hands down. For plainclothes/concealed carry the P228 has all the advantages of the P226 while being just enough smaller to make it easier to conceal. I still carry a handgun everyday, as I have for 50 years. And FWIW, the ONLY handguns I load and attach to my body are DA/SA or DAO _hammer fired_ semi-autos or revolvers. Your description of the reason why is perfect, James. Long, heavy trigger pull. Perfect for defense use. I chose the P228 because it was most like the revolvers I had carried before. I especially liked that it had no manual safety, just the hammer drop lever. I could chamber it, drop the hammer, and I had exactly the manual of arms I was used to for 15 years. The Beretta is a fine pistol, but I prefer NOT having a manual safety.

When I worked security many years ago, there were some security companies that only wanted you to carry DA/SA pistols because of that long, deliberate first pull of the trigger. It was an extra measure of safety in their eyes. I'd have to say that when I first started carrying with a semi-auto pistol, it made it easier to get over the psychological hurdle of carrying with a round chambered since I was using a HKP30 DA/SA. Luckily, now I train with both striker and DA/SA triggers so I don't really have a preference.

My P226, which started life as a .40 S&W LE gun has become the most generally useful pistol I own. I got into it cheap, rather quickly added a .357 SIG factory barrel (shooting .357 is my guilty pleasure) then was able to find one of the now apparently extinct Caliber X-Change Kits for 9mm, lurking in an LE distributor's warehouse as "new old stock". Then I scored a used SIG .22LR conversion kit. By the time it was over, I had a four caliber P226 with a bunch of extra magazines for about the price of a new 9mm P226. Then just for fun, I got the SIG P226 .177 pellet gun so I can practice at home. If you are a P226 guy, that pellet pistol is the best $100 you'll ever spend. It is incredibly similar to the cartridge firing gun. I shoot it at 10-15 yards and it is incredibly accurate. Trigger is about as close to the actual P226 as ou are going to get in a CO2 gun. The only downside to the P226 is its size, and that is manageable. I live in south Florida, and carry it in an old Galco Jackass rig over a tee shirt and under an unbuttoned "fishing shirt" used sort of like a jacket. Of the two Guicci SIGs, I like the P226. For some reason I've never had the slightest interest in a striker-fired SIG. I think maybe it was the start up issues with both the P320 and the P365 and how SIG handled them that turned me off, although I;m sure they are fine now.

The fact i can have a full size and a compact or a different caliber off the shelf is pretty cool too in the 320. Imo i'd say the 320 barely edges out the 226. The 226 really feels like quality. The one point about the 320, at least for me is the FCU, and it's not the reason you might think. Although I like the concept of swapping the FCU into a different frame / slide combo (or a flux raider that James demo'd) but the real reason I like the removable FCU is that I like to be able to remove the FCU and clean out the frame and the FCU. Serialized frame guns like the 226, it's really hard to clean out the frame well - there always seems to be something left behind. I know that seems to be overly fastidious, but I'm being honest 😉

I guess I just wanted to point out one thing in favor of the Fire Control Unit in the 320. It makes those of us anal retentive folks happy to pull the whole thing out and clean it up. But I really do like the idea of being able to carry one in the chamber with the hammer down using the decocker - very good way of carrying. So, absolutely not disrespect for the 226 is meant at all. It feels as if there are so many good handguns available today compared to just 10 years ago.😀

@@kramerbaretta6383 I love the idea of having a hammer that's down with a hard trigger pull for safe carry, where are you don't need to rack a slide or anything. It's kind of like a revolver only better. I don't actually even own one because they're kind of pricey but I would if I ran into a deal. I think it's something that you could hand down to your grandchildren and it would still be good to go. Especially if you bought a few replacement parts, extractor, springs, barrel ect. I think it would still be serviceable 50+ years from now if it wasn't too abused.

Working as a SIG Dealer I can’t stress enough how problematic 320’s can be. SIG is so focused on marketing and producing a new “flavor” of 320 every month that they don’t take the time to simply improve what they’ve already made. The P226 and it’s other derivatives are good designs because they haven’t been destroyed by “nu-Sig” for those that don’t know the same dumbass who destroyed kimbers reputation and killed their QC has been the CEO of Sig Sauer for the past few years

@@alrbredwall it’s not about the lawsuits, it’s about the 320’s trigger. Only my opinion, but the 320 trigger travel is very short and some don’t even have a manual safety. The p226 was my first pistol bought when I turned 21. I had it 20 years, never thought about selling it. I purchased a p365 as a CC and got over my aversion to striker fired guns. Then I shot a p320. From the first shot, the whole gun made sense. I was more accurate, had a better grip, and the gun felt more natural and comfortable in the hand. Needless to say, I wasn't shooting the p226 after the p320 experience, and I ended up selling her last year. Never thought I would sell my first pistol, but the difference between the p226 and the p320 is like driving a 2000s (insert car here) versus todays models. There's a lot to like about the old models, and they may even look better from a nostalgia standpoint, but the p320 is a better gun.
