If I could use this comment to spotlight some actually good Scooby-Doo content, my personal favorite SD film is Scooby-Doo Stage Fright. All 5 mains are the best they’ve ever been, (individually and as a unit), the supporting cast is a roster of interesting and memorable characters, the chase/action scenes are tense, the mystery is engaging, and it's just a good time all around.

I love the idea of talking about actually good Scooby content so I'm pinning this! I don't think I've ever seen that one so I'll go check it out. I love Witch's Ghost for the intro to the hex girls, cozy New England Halloween vibes and of course the legendary Tim Curry lending his voice. Zombie island is also classically scary and features Jim Cummings voice acting. Scooby Doo crossover with the Addams family is also super fun. 😊

When I first saw the teaser trailer, I was pretty bias since Velma has always been my favourite Scooby-Doo character, Shaggy being my second favourite. And I said to myself that it can't be worse than Be Cool, and don't get me wrong, I completely understand the complaints and why people hate this take, especially since Scooby's not in it, which was my problem. But I decided to watch the series and keep an open mind in order to get a full opinion, despite knowing I'm going to be disappointed. When I first saw the two episodes, it was a mixed bag for me. Velma and Shaggy are meh, if you ignore the nationality change. Fred and Daphne on the other hand, are even bigger arseholes than I've originally anticipated from previous incarnations. And they're reason for not including Scooby is bullshit when you look at Mystery Incorporated as an example. I'm not fussed if you make him an realistic dog like in the fan film, just add him. Spoiler Alert, I kinda warmed up to Daphne since episode 4, but I feel so bad for Shaggy, having no luck with relationships. Although it has given me some inspiration for a upcoming Scooby-Doo crossover that is in development for my insta comic. Nothing beats Mystery Incorporated, by far.

1 and 2 were meh, the only saving grace Shaggy in a way, despite not being a stoner apparently. 3 and 4 were a slight improvement, in my opinion, but still weak. I was actually laughing with episode 3, mainly on how petty Daphne and Velma's rivalry is and how pathetic Fred is as a character, again the only saving grace is Shaggy as he's the only character that isn't an arsehole. The amount of hate it's got on KZbin is relentless! Everyday I would see countless videos of reviews rants and reactions on how terrible the show is. Even if the next episodes get better (which I doubt) hardcore Scooby-Doo fans are still going to hate it for the sake of it.

@@jayheadley8061 It just feels like they hate being a Scooby Doo property but also want the core fan base to watch and it feels like they're talking down to the audience. I like Shaggy and a couple of the jokes were fun but overall this is an abysmal show and I don't think much of it can be redeemed (though hopefully some of the core problems can be cleared up) I hate how all other characters besides Shaggy were portrayed and it really felt like they thought they needed to make it "edgy" to keep the IP relevant which shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the source material and fandom. I grew up with What's New, despite not being a huge fan of Scooby-Doo at the time mainly because it's formulaic, accept the 4 home direct films from the late 90s and early 2000s as well as the live action films, which slowly gained my interest with the franchise. It wasn't until I saw Mystery Incorporated where I actually start to love Scooby-Doo. My reason it being the only Scooby-Doo TV show what you actually learn about the characters outside mystery solving, character development and an ongoing plot, as well as keeping the charm and formula hardcore Scooby-Doo fan are familiar with. And it's the only one where I actually like Fred.

I haven't seen the show because I don't have HBO MAX. But thank you for pointing out one of the biggest issues with these kinds of shows which is making fun of people who like watching old nostalgic family shows or films. I'm a 38 year old man who still watches cartoons and also loves looking at children's illustrations. As a kid there were quite a few things that most other kids were into that I wasn't. And it did make me feel left out a little. Also, yes, animation is really going through a rough patch now with this, Netflix cancelling animated films and series left and right (really pissed about that Bone series), and that rather condescending comment at the Oscars last year. You would think with Guillermo del Toro's sincere comments on animation being a medium and not a genre, things would improve but it looks like it's going to be a long while.

Sorry. Want to say one more thing. I feel this whole shaming people for liking animated films is one way we got the Disney live action remakes. There were a couple of good ones, but those films overall felt really insulting, belittling and hypocritical in what they're conveying. Like they all talk about how they're making their characters "an improvement" over the original when it's really just shallow and based more on bad faith criticisms of the original films than their own opinions. I'm not against making Ariel a different race but Im not counting on the Little Mermaid remake being good for more justifiable story related reasons.

Just want to clarify I am totally anti-racist in regards to the elepehant in the room with this show. But there was no reason for the creator to make this a Scooby Doo property because literally everything about this show doesn’t feel like the Scooby Doo gang. Like this version of Shaggy aka Norville in this show would’ve worked way better as a different character that isn’t Shaggy or as a character for a show with the same premise. They didn’t just race-swap the characters they literally changed their personalities and things about them that made them iconic like Shaggy’s cool-dude voice. This version of Shaggy would’ve worked better as someone new to the gang. He’s good as a stand-alone character, but he acts nothing like Shaggy. And if people in the animation industry want to create more of a diversity in cartoons (which I think is a great idea), they really need to stop thinking they should race-swap the most iconic characters. For example when Peanuts was being called out back in 1968 for lacking diversity, instead of race-swapping Charlie Brown they made a new character in the comic strips and cartoons, Franklin. Now I know there was a bit of a controversy from A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving with his character being alone on the other side of the table which I’m not sure was intentional, but my point is they didn’t change the characters we already love. I’m sure there are other cartoons that did this as well. But what also bothers me about Velma is yes the fact that they cancel several animated shows like Infinity Train that had true potential and were admired by fans and remove many old animated shows fans love from their streaming service and they make this show their shameless highlight. That really says a lot about WB tragically. They just want their audience to be angry. They’re not far from being as bad as Nickelodeon now. I’m mostly just addressing the whole bandwagon this show started. It simply should’ve been an original IP, not a Scooby Doo IP at all. They ruined everything we love about the characters and don’t even include Scooby Doo.

Yeah it does kind of feel like it was a working title that got re skinned into a Mystery Inc thing doesn't it? I'm not qualified to speak on the representation point but I am disappointed for the people who were excited to get a more inclusive cast. It seems like they thought they could get away with being superficially concerned with important causes and wasted any potential to actually make any kind of impact. I'm fine with a reimagining of a character if it's done well and I'm absolutely with you that there should be new characters made that accurately make all people feel seen. Sadly, this didn't do either thing. From my understanding (and I could be wrong) Franklin was created by Charles Schulz in the comic strip because he wanted diversity for peanuts and he fought to get Franklin added to CB Thanksgiving. The network was afraid to piss off racists so they agreed but put him by himself so he could be edited out for certain conservative markets. I believe Schultz himself was rightfully pissed.

Confessional time: I don't really like Scooby-Doo? Not that I wanna yuck anyone's yums, here. My partner of 8 years likes a lot of Hannah-Barbara stuff. But for the last thirty-mumble years, my experiences with the franchise have only ever been tedious and annoying. So, I was really intrigued by your description of the show as "looking like it was made by people who hate Scooby-Doo." Like... why? Did... did they think _I_ was going to watch it? Because I'm not. I've got romance novels to write and a gay VN to make. I'm not going to sink hundreds of my finite Earth minutes into a hate show. I only clicked on this because _you're_ funny, and I like to watch funny videos at bedtime so I'm not all stressed out at having the worst upstairs neighbors currently living. But, seriously, why make a show that's all about how much you hate the show you're making? If they wanted to make a Rick and Morty rip-off... well, it hurts my soul to admit it, but somebody should have just let them do that. Anyway, good job as usual, Ms Avery. Sorry you had a bad time. Hope you get to review a show you like next time.

That's fine! Scooby is important to me personally because I've been obsessed with mysteries ever since I was a kid and it's just this wholesome show about this found family running around solving crimes done by capitalists and honestly that's something kid and adult me can get behind. But it's not everyone's thing. I really am so confused because in interviews Mindy kept saying she tried hard to, "respect the IP" and I'm just like WHERE MINDY?? Thank you so much for watching! ☺️ I'm glad I can help you chill out. I rely on videos I can put on to help me sleep and so it means a lot that people feel cool to come to the channel and chill.

Did this even need to exist for a origin story of Scooby Doo? No it really didn't & the fact this is getting another season is more to say is WHY? The animation is one of the only things good about it, despite the fact we already have lots of adult animation series that they blend along with each other. I wish it wasn't about Scooby Doo & be it's own thing instead, yeah it would be generic as hell, but it would at least not destroy a series so bad.

Thank you for watching this show so I don't have to (though I wasn't going to anyway but that's beside the point). I actually got my college degree in animation so it always hurts me to see so much skill and effort wasted by a horrible script. I mean...the comedic timing alone is so off it's painful. If there is one thing all animator understand, it's timing! Anyway, here's a fun animation fact for the day. At the end of every Courage the Cowardly Dog when the Stretch Films logo pops up there is a creepy maniacal laugh that plays. That's Dilworth's actual laugh. It's not voice acting, he just sounds like that normally. I'm rather glad he was on vacation the whole time I interned there, he was really creepy.

Im glad you didn't say something along the lines of "Meta comedy is getting old so stop doing it" like a lot of people I've seen review this show... It's not that meta humor is necessarily bad, it's just that Velma's meta humor is an awful dumpster fire, and then on top of that they just do it non stop instead of actually writing things that make sense. The way people have been looking at Velma and using it as an excuse for why meta humor 'sucks' is just disappointing to me, like it's the same argument that Fox news or smth could make like, oh look, This show has gay people in it and the show sucked, and therefore it sucked because it has gay people in it. Meta humor isn't the problem.. bad and poorly executed meta humor, especially an overreliance on it, is the problem. (Obviously the garbage jokes are not Velma's only problem, but I feel like a lot of people, at least that I've seen have been putting a majority of the blame on it, so I just wanted to point it out.)
@AveryTalksAboutStuff

Oh yeah, I love meta commentary but the reason I love it is that it gives media a chance to show an awareness and consideration for the audience and comment on things important to the viewers. This show does none of that. Technically the whole, "look we're doing a thing, isn't that weird" is not true meta commentary but lampshading which always feels to me like the writers aren't confident in their own work and are afraid of the audience instead of speaking to us.

So, I definitely agree with your view on the show, especially based on the first two episodes. Episode one really sets the viewer up to dislike Velma since she has an obvious, "I'm better and smarter than everyone. If you don't do things like I do, then you're wrong" air about her. However, I have continued to watch, and see that they are calling her out on her bullshit. I assumed they would, but they went so far out of their way to make you hate her in these first two episodes that it's sort of hard to come around to liking her. Also, the meta humor, to me, felt really overbearing. Like you said, it's not enough to go, "isn't it weird that shows always do this" to do the exact thing but do nothing else with it. As of now, I'd say I feel more indifferent to the show. I am intrigued enough to want to stay to the end, but there isn't anything that's really standing out that makes me go either "I LOVE THIS" or "I HATE THIS". Yes, the jokes about adults liking cartoons are weird and mean spirited, but I feel this is further to set Velma up as being in the wrong and needing to grow up. This also feels what is being done with Daphne, Fred, and even Norville. Overall, it just feels so far removed from Scooby-Doo that I don't really get why they decided to set it in the franchise. At least the animation is gorgeous lol

I was hoping that the characters would grow and therefore the show itself would get better as time went on so that's good to know. I honestly think the main reason so many of us intensely hate it is that it feels like humor that we thought we'd left behind ten years ago. Like very mean and judgy. I think they want to be Schitt's Creek where all the characters suck but then you watch them become better humans but that show was way better at making the characters fun and quotable right from the beginning so that you have the patience to see them change.

@Avery Talks About Stuff I do think there are funny moments and interesting story moments but the tone feels messy. Like, it almost feels like the writing team doesn't know what type of show they are making because one moment they're going for horror/thriller, the next parody, etc. Maybe this is one of those shows that takes a while before it gets its footing and becomes something good if not great. Right now, I feel the show DESPERATELY needs to work on making the gang likeable and a legitimate friend group. For now, I don't love it but I want to finish it.

I don’t care for the race swapping not because I have anything against diverse characters but because I hate when writers use previously white characters as a crutch. If your (insert race here) character cannot stand on their own, you need to rethink your character. Hollywood needs to green light some original ideas with diverse characters so the point can get through their thick skulls.
@AveryTalksAboutStuff

I definitely agree that they need to greenlight more stuff with original well written diverse characters. Another KZbinr who is South Asian likened race swapping white characters for diversity as getting sloppy seconds and that's fair.
