This week I steal a bike and head off into the hills in search of trout...my mission - To catch a fish on a Cicada Fly!!
It's a tough place to get to but it can be very worth the effort and today ends up being exactly that. I also go into just why I think fishing barbless is the way forward...Hope you enjoy!

Thanks Alex, great video as usual. Agree completely about barbless hooks. Yes, they do just drop out of the fish mouth when in a net. Only down side is occasionally they will penetrate so deep the fish bleeds. When this happens I try and put pressure on the bleed spot for 15 seconds or so and try and stop the bleeding. Always think about how to maintain a good healthy fishery.

As usual, very nice work, thanks for brightening up the winter for us near the Arctic! Back in the day, with barbed hooks the main deal was just keeping the rod tip up, but with barbless, there's the angle thing. Could you maybe do a Friday filler on that, and what to do if you get a jumper? Might be good for those starting out or converting to barbless.

As exciting as it is, your rivers, your wild places, and your utterly amazing trout, have to be at the top of the charts for every fly fisher. Forty years later, I still remember being blown away by the idea, and the presence, of tree ferns :) Nothing like that in these parts....TIM

@@TrippinOnTrout yes! I’m a week shy of 65 and fly fishing the Bow River when I was a kid was wild country back then. Most of my favorite spots are parts of suburbia now sad to say. I think I figured out why your fish are so big compared to ours. Winter. You really don’t have any when the rivers freeze over and the fish go dormant for 4-5 months. Your fish feed all year round, the only things changing are water volumes and perhaps what they feed on, cicada season for example. Any, love your show.

Great vid mate, definitely an advocate of barbless hooks, as long as you can find strong ones and have the right angled dry hooks for the dry dropper otherwise the dropper on the dry ends up contaminating the waterways.👌

Good comment re; barbless hooks. Another point I'd like to add as a former Alaskan fly guide, barbless hooks penetrate much better. You can easily demonstrate this by pushing identical hooks into a piece of cardboard, one with the barb crushed. When you get to the part where the barb widens it takes a lot more pressure to push it through. Also in conventional hook production, the barb is used to assist in the bending of the wire.

Barbed hooks also require harder hooksets to drive the barb through. This means you need heavier leader to prevent breaking off on the strike. Alternatively, if you don't strike hard enough with a barbed hook, you get a really poor hook hold and are likely to lose the fish. Either way, the barbless hook will catch you more fish

I must say that I'm a little bit jealous of you, living in Trout paradise New Zealand. Your advice to fish barbless is super. I saw another video with you where you were taking other fishermen hard for throwing away their liners, I liked to hear that very much. But, now it comes dude, in a way you should grab your own nose, though you snip of your liners that you tied and leave the snips right where you are. Out in nature. Sure no animals can or will be trapped in your small parts, but they will dissolve and become microplastic, or even fish food. You who look so much to do everything perfectly, there is that tool called Monomaster which you can buy online. I would be happy if you take my advice and get one of those and if not please don't snip off your liners and leave them out in your fantastic Country in front of your Camera. Take care dude and thank you for your videos.

Been watching your vids for a while. Honestly man, these NZ rivers look amazing. Absolutely beautiful. This river in particular is perfection. Can I be cheeky and ask which river this is. or which area of NZ it's in. Its stunning. Plus your stance on barbless hooks is cool. ( I'm from UK and fly fish lakes and occasionally rivers in Wales, Scotland)

Thanks man, appreciate the support. I won’t name rivers sorry, it’s in the North Island and that’s about all you will get from me! The good thing is that, pretty much every river has fish in it here..:just gotta go look🤙

Hi Alex. Do you fish all sizes of the barbless hook? I fish barbless as well but for hooks size 16 or 18 I still use the barb.

high alex have picked up you are using a 7ft poly float leader then adding tippet, whats the advantage over buying tapered leaders your opinion on pros cons greatly appreciated
@TrippinOnTrout
@TrippinOnTrout 3 жыл бұрын
It really help when using very long leaders (15ft +) to turn things over. Especially with wind and wind resistant flies etc. don’t really need one if using leaders under 13ft or so

Another great clip Alex. What was the water clarity like (looked okay)? When we were up there the other day (plan B) it had a bit of colour, and maybe running a tad high judging by the tide marks on the rocks. Nothing working on the surface.

Just a couple of observations. #1: Nobody eliminates the competition like you do. #2: Reason #27 to fish barbless is that when you stick it in your ear or your face[or heaven forbid someone else's] it comes out way easy.

Alex, really enjoy your videos, seeing NZ and those incredible trout is really special for someone who fishes in Pennsylvania. My question is the type of line you use. In the Videos you say SA's Infinity Smooth... but in your link, It's SA's MPX line... I know SA's lines either the Infinity or the MPX are really great lines but which one do you actually use...
@TrippinOnTrout
@TrippinOnTrout 3 жыл бұрын
My bad there bro, looks like forgot to change it. I use the infinity smooth all the time now (although over winter here, I may switch back to the MPX as I’ll be Nymphing with heavy shit more)
@jeremyvelkoff1487
@jeremyvelkoff1487 3 жыл бұрын
@@TrippinOnTrout thanks for getting back to me so quickly... makes sense MPX being the rig most suited for throwing heavy objects... do you find the infinity line works well for streamers and poppers ...thinking small mouth Bass to Pike, Muskies ... living up to the infinity uses for the line..
@TrippinOnTrout
@TrippinOnTrout 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeremyvelkoff1487 Yeah it would deal with them ok but if that’s gonna be the mainstay of your fishing, I might go for the MPX. As an all rounder though, the infinity is the way forward

Yeah I was reading "Fly fishing the South Platte" by Roger Hill.. He talks a lot about how you'll hook more fish with barbless. He said many times the fish will have themselves hooked before you even know what's going on. Great old book

I completely agree with barbless hooks. One day I was fishing a small stream with dry flies and could not tie a fly on for the life of me, the knot wouldn't hold. Lost a fly 3 separate times, but because of the barbless hook the fish were able to spit the fly out and I was able to get the fly back all 3 times.
