My book has arrived ! Now I can really get into your system of learning from the beginning. Your excitement about the importance of proper foundation for learning music and guitar in general is totally infectious and I never get tired of listening to you. Meanwhile it is dawning on me that freedom of expression on guitar is a very, very lofty goal. However the wisdom is not to contemplate how long the road, but to begin taking the first steps. Thank You and many thanks to your mother and father.

It is pretty to realize that I made a right choise. Being a professional saxophone player I am ok with a sight-reading. But when I grab a guitar to learn and play it I saw that it is very hard to play the guitar using notes, because It is the other instrument and I've never done this before. Then I found Berklee Guitar book vol.1 and started to work on it, going through all exersices there. I've finished just a half of the book , and my skills are growing up! I was happy to know that dear Tomo, my KZbin teacher, did video series about this book and advises it for learning! I feel I'm on the right way. Thank you Tomo for all your help, videos, informations, knowledge! You are The Best One.

You can't go wrong with the two Reading Studies books from Berklee press. They are excellent! You work through multiple keys within one position which forces guitar players out of "pattern mode" and into "music mode". Leavitt also puts little random twists and turns into the exercises that confuse the muscle memory from falling into predictable patterns. Do one exercise a day, slowly and don't repeat.

Thank you Professor Fujita! Before I known Guitar Wisdom, I took more than four month to study this book by myself. I feel really confused about the noise from other strings, and no one could tell me what is the right way to play. Your Sight-Reading Series is really helpful for me and I start from beginning again, learn how to mute, listen carefully of each note.

Tomo, I'm so glad you started this series on Guitar Wisdom. The last time I had an in person guitar teacher, she was so wonderful, she started teaching me to read using Frederick Noad's Solo Guitar Playing 1 and it really was a huge help in my confidence. Even Al Di Meola recently emphasized the importance of being able to read music as a guitar player in his interview with Rick Beato.

@@TomoFujitaMusic Do you think going through all three books would be enough to get a good grasp of the fretboard; notes and their positions, keys of chords and scales. I would like to learn that way if it's not a bad idea while having fun and learning songs by ear in the process. Do you feel if I stuck with those two ways of playing and practicing guitar together would suffice in making me an accomplished guitarist for the most part? I really appreciate your input. I know your course is always an option as well but wanted your homest thoughts. Thanks, Brian W (Southern IL)

William Leavitt was a long-time chair of Berklee’s Guitar Department, serving from 1965 to 1990. He had a profound influence on Berklee’s guitar curriculum, as well as jazz guitar education worldwide, and he mentored thousands of musicians. As a performer and/or arranger, he worked with many renowned artists, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Andy Williams, and Patti Page.

I am coming to electric guitar after getting to an intermediate level with classical guitar many years ago. Learning this way is really effective but for those who are a little more advanced (or ambitious ;p) I also recommend learning pieces for the classical guitar. If someone work it well it will surely be heard in your normall play!

Great videos. The matter is to know how to study and to study properly. After do that if you want to get to the next level you need to work hard and to spend more time than the beginning. This is one way that one teacher learned to me in the past. I think Guitarist Oz Noy said he spent 4 years of hardworking to level up.

So I've been tooling round the guitar for a while and basically learned strictly through KZbin and tabs. I can play a bit but cannot really comprehend the instrument. After watching this video I went and bought it (used). Also, no CD as recommended. It took me a while (didnt understand 1st position or where C was). But after a while I found some footing. I already have music reading abilities from my trumpet playing so once I knew where to start I was able to move along well. Will say this, after 30 mins I feel as if this book is what I've been needing all this time to really start learning fundamentals. Its fun playing and discovering the exercises. I'm looking forward to learning more about guitar. Thanks for the sound recommendation!

Mr. Tomo we all share the same similarities, loving music it’s an awesome universal language, in my humble opinion. At 52 I am trying so hard to learn an instrument that I love. Watching your KZbin videos has educated me and enhanced my playing. I will definitely purchase this book today on Amazon. Thank you once again!

great video, i'm working in Volume 1 right now and what you say is true, it's better to have a teacher help you with this book bc you may think you are "Reading it " correctly but sometimes you are learning it " reading it" the wrong way, so in the long run it's not good to learn this book alone . Peace !

Thanks Tomo. You inspired me to pick up my book from ‘81. My teacher, Berklee student Dale Freeman, insisted that it wouldn’t stop me from sounding like Keith Richard if that was what I wanted to do. 😆 So no CD! BUT I did transcribe (some) of the duets into garage band so I can play along with the fiendish robot 🤖 partner (Chet? Les?) because they do sound pretty as duets and you can’t fudge the 1ee&ah. Plus GB lets you set the tempo to 42 if you’re having a chord catastrophe kinda day. 😖😁 I’m up to about page 74 but maybe it’s time to start over. “Review frequently”

Single note melody and simple rhythm are easy to sight read it's like reading kindergarten book. Funk rhythm with tons of ghost note, unconventional riffage and pull off with tapping thrown in drizzle tho...... I pray it was either in 4/4 or 6/8 sometimes I skip it for stuff i know that's hard to imagine in my head and proceed to listen to the music and video. And those pianist say sight reading for guitar is easy smh

Mr.Tomo ! I am completely self taught, & I’m able to learn greatly watching your videos. The catch is, I play in open G, & I don’t know standard at all.
