It is pretty to realize that I made a right choise. Being a professional saxophone player I am ok with a sight-reading. But when I grab a guitar to learn and play it I saw that it is very hard to play the guitar using notes, because It is the other instrument and I've never done this before. Then I found Berklee Guitar book vol.1 and started to work on it, going through all exersices there. I've finished just a half of the book , and my skills are growing up! I was happy to know that dear Tomo, my KZbin teacher, did video series about this book and advises it for learning! I feel I'm on the right way. Thank you Tomo for all your help, videos, informations, knowledge! You are The Best One.

You can't go wrong with the two Reading Studies books from Berklee press.They are excellent! You work through multiple keys within one position which forces guitar players out of "pattern mode" and into "music mode". Leavitt also puts little random twists and turns into the exercises that confuse the muscle memory from falling into predictable patterns. Do one exercise a day, slowly and don't repeat.

Tomo, I'm so glad you started this series on Guitar Wisdom. The last time I had an in person guitar teacher, she was so wonderful, she started teaching me to read using Frederick Noad's Solo Guitar Playing 1 and it really was a huge help in my confidence. Even Al Di Meola recently emphasized the importance of being able to read music as a guitar player in his interview with Rick Beato.

@@TomoFujitaMusic Do you think going through all three books would be enough to get a good grasp of the fretboard; notes and their positions, keys of chords and scales. I would like to learn that way if it's not a bad idea while having fun and learning songs by ear in the process. Do you feel if I stuck with those two ways of playing and practicing guitar together would suffice in making me an accomplished guitarist for the most part? I really appreciate your input. So I've been tooling round the guitar for a while and basically learned strictly through KZbin and tabs. I can play a bit but cannot really comprehend the instrument. After watching this video I went and bought it (used). Also, no CD as recommended. It took me a while (didnt understand 1st position or where C was). But after a while I found some footing. I already have music reading abilities from my trumpet playing so once I knew where to start I was able to move along well. Will say this, after 30 mins I feel as if this book is what I've been needing all this time to really start learning fundamentals. Its fun playing and discovering the exercises. I'm looking forward to learning more about guitar. Thanks for the sound recommendation!

My teacher, Berklee student Dale Freeman, insisted that it wouldn’t stop me from sounding like Keith Richard if that was what I wanted to do. 😆 So no CD! BUT I did transcribe (some) of the duets into garage band so I can play along with the fiendish robot 🤖 partner (Chet? Les?) because they do sound pretty as duets and you can’t fudge the 1ee&ah. Plus GB lets you set the tempo to 42 if you’re having a chord catastrophe kinda day. 😖😁 I’m up to about page 74 but maybe it’s time to start over. “Review frequently”

I also bought the three Berklee volumes by William Leavitt in the early 80s. My volume 1 is falling apart as I used it for years, but never got to volume 3. Thanks for reminding me of it. I should go back a finish the project so that I can stop feeling guilty. Volume 1 was great! Who was William Leavitt? I've searched the web earlier for more about him, but there isn't much there!
@TomoFujitaMusic6 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing! You're very welcome! Volume one is so good! He was a chair of Guitar Department .... William Leavitt was a long-time chair of Berklee’s Guitar Department, serving from 1965 to 1990. He had a profound influence on Berklee’s guitar curriculum, as well as jazz guitar education worldwide, and he mentored thousands of musicians. As a performer and/or arranger, he worked with many renowned artists, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Andy Williams, and Patti Page.

Thank u for this insight. I will check the book out definitely. I sight read as a pianist but have a hard time applying it to guitar so I resort to cheat a bit by memorizing the fretboard and use my ears instead.

I purchased the book years ago and now because of your help I get to learn how to use it. Thank you so much for your generosity and courage to tell people the correct way to play. I play in a worship band at church, seem like all of the sheet music is not made for the guitar. Can this type of sheet music really help me?

Perfect time to learn new material......lockdown. as an ex teacher I can tell you the one grown up trick to reading is lots of repetition. Get an egg timer ....play two bars for 3 minutes......do that for 5 days.....move on. So 30 minutes reading will be 2 bars X 10 X 3 minutes = 30 mins. Or if it's going well do a whole line for 3 mins. Tick the music for every 10x through......5 ticks....move on. I've done this with every student that wanted to read... .it's brutal but it works faster than any other way I ever found.

Excellent recommendation Tomo!. I completed the three volumes of a Modern Method for Guitar and then studied Melodic Rhythms for guitar which was also written by Bill Leavitt, I studied this methods with my former teacher Felipe Souza who is one of Mexico´s best guitarists and he studied at Berklee for some time. There is a wealth of information in these methods!! :)
