Love seeing the sights and daily life of countries that basically no one travels to. It's good to see videos like this of African countries.

“After years studying informality in Nigeria, Dutch architect and planner Rem Koolhaas reach the same conclusion. In the West, he writes, “there’s a sense of infinite choice, but a very conventional set of options from which to choose.” By contrast, “in Lagos, there is no choice, but there are countless ways to articulate the condition of no choice.”

This reminds me of my time in India, thirty years ago. I can still smell those open sewers with the concrete "grating" covers.

It slways amazes me that there's probably order in this apparent chaos. These kinds of markets are found in many places across the world, and somehow they seem to work. I've seen them in Asia, the middle east, Africa. All very similar.

I have travelled a lot; 89 countries and territories to date. So I have seen my share of the developing world. But even to me, this looks pretty grim! Nevertheless it’s fascinating! Thank you for sharing!

This legitimately sounds exactly like the ambient sounds that play when you zoom into a city on Civilization V. Wow, I bet these sounds are pretty routine for a lot of people, but to a western person, they sound so exotic.

To be fair, this is a small part of Abidjan, and most of it is very modern with much of the city being of developed world standards. But for sure Dakar didn't have this large of an area like this.

I don't agree with the description that this is "chaotic." It seems like a very peaceful and thriving market economy. And I didn't notice one big box retailer in the whole clip. Not one. This kind of marketplace seems much more egalitarian than it's "western" equivalent. Though assuredly not as "efficient." There are many interesting things going on here.
@GeographyKing18 күн бұрын
I didn't mean chaotic as a bad thing, but more like "not orderly". Everything is very informal. The buses don't always park where they're supposed to be, and finding the right bus can be interesting. But I'm sure if you live there, you'd figure it out.

Something I took away is that even though the area seems very dusty, most people have very clean and nice clothing. Which makes me wonder if going to Adjame is a normal practice for wealthier or middle class Ivorians (correct me if this is the wrong term) as it felt like I saw a lot of polos and skinny jeans lol. Did the tour guide talk about that at all?

Yeah, a lot of these market areas have at least someone booming loud tunes, but not here. The markets that have stereo and speaker sellers are always showing off the prowess of their wares. A lot of this market seemed geared towards getting stuff on buses to other parts of the country.

Honestly the congestion & buildings don’t bother me a bit. It’s just the amount of trash on the ground at all times. I wonder if it’s just a pride thing at that point and they don’t care?

I never want to travel to any places that aren't Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. It's like, "do you want to spend $1000s on seeing how 'different' the world is?" No. I don't need to prove to myself how not spoiled, or not racist i am.
