Seen Brutus as a kid of about 4yrs old. As in our way to see grandma & ,my dad said we're going the long way to go see Big Brutus & we girls weren't very excited, complaining all the way. We didn't want to see a piece of old machinery, but was in total awe when we actually set eyes on it. Dad grew up in a very small town in southeast Ks. He was 1 of 8 born in a house in the middle of nowhere.

I used to drive by Big Brutus before it was a museum. It was black back in the 1970s. They had to take down power lines and telephone lines to move it from site to site. The mining pits are now filled with water and kids used to go swimming in them, very deep and not recommended.

I knew these monster shovels and drag lines were electric, but I didn't know they were DC motors. But I remember being told how a DC motor could turn slow and still be at full horsepower. They couldn't do the same with AC motors. This was done at the DuPont nylon plant in Seaford, Delaware. It had something to do with forcing the nylon through microscopic holes to produce the fine strands used for yarn.

My mother was born and raised in the town limits and lived there until she was 19. Her family goes way back to West Mineral's beginnings including my great grandfather who served as town constable. He was killed in a tragic accident in 1926 in the line of duty, so to speak. He was also in charge of the local pump at the town water station aside from being night policeman. On the night of July 10, 1926, he made his way to the station pump to switch it off and was electrocuted after apparently contacting a live wire.

Back in the 70s there was an electric shovel in Sullivan County Indiana. It was a walking earth mover that had no tracks but did have feet. It would set down on the central body and the feet were lifted and moved so that when it "stood up" the entire machine either moved forward or backwards. The power it received was fed through 1 foot thick cables. The bucket could hold 4 pickup trucks. I remember not being able to go to the peach orchard anymore because that was the part of that big machine's path and, going northwest across the county. Don't know if it's still working or if it's standing abandoned like this relic of the past. There's a power plant not far from where I grew up that was built years after I left. It gets it's coal by railroad.

Oh,yes, that use of AC/DC hookup, was known as a motor/generator setup! The New Haven Railroad had several classes of engines, that used MG sets! Check out the book-"When the Steam Railroads Electrified",as there is further data!! Thank you for an interesting sidebar on Kansas history, and man, that machine is MASSIVE! Thank you 😇 😊!

OMG. In 1984, I was driving with my wife and son near Burdett. We were driving west on 156 throgh the area. I was looking to the west. I saw what looked like a massive water sprinkler in the distance. Then we drove into some rain and when we came out of it, there was an obvious tornado not far away. I had been seeing the debris being blown about. Dumb me. I was thinking I could drive by it because it was off to the south but 156 took a turn to the south and I pulled off on the straight away road and started going 80+ down the highway in a 55mph zone to the east. A few minutes later, the Highway Patrol was on my tail flashing their lights. I slowed down to 70 and they passed me like I was stopped. We went onto a side road and parked and watched the tornadoes developing out of that cell. We then were under clear skies watching them. When I stopped to turn around, I paused and watched the enormity of the funnel. It was mesmerizing. The wife was screaming to get moving. But it was incredible to experience.

When i moved into the area, I went to West Mineral for eighth grade. They had classes from kindergarten to eighth grade at the time, and I had a grand total of 9 classmates lol. What isn't shown on the school property is the building that was originally the high school, it was the grade school at the time. It was three stories tall, with a gymnasium in the bottom. the gymnasium was unused. (At least I think that's what it was...) The top floor looked like it was stuck in the 50s, old books lying around, old chairs and whatnot. It was in bad shape. It burned down in the early 2000s. The first building she talked about was the middle school. The smaller building was where some equipment was stored, including the maintenance truck, a 1967 Chevy C10 in nice condition. I got to ride in it one summer while working there.

I absolutely LOVE the community. I think I want to move to there. I live in West Virginia right now. So I already want to live where the "city life", is far removed from me. The thing that catches my heart right out of the gate. Is the "flatness" of the land. In West Virginia, there is never a part of land that you can stand in, that you cannot "see" a hill withing line of sight. In the entire state. Even in the bigger cities. So the "flat" land in your city really pulls my heart-strings. The part that makes me, back up with fear. Is MEDICAL. If I need to go to the hospital. Where am I going. or if I need to call for ambulance. How long am I gonna, "hope they hold to life a little longer". or, after the fact. Where is the closest pharmacy. How far am I gonna travel every (prescription re-fill). The massive (electric shovel) up this way, was big muskie. Google tells me that (big muskie) was twice the size of Brutus. BUT, Musky was dismantled. And all a person can "see" of him, is the bucket. So, Brutus still has the thrown, on that count (a person can still "see" him. Musky has been sold off for scrap. rip Musky

I was born in Pittsburg, KS and grew up just outside of Joplin, MO. From West Mineral to Joplin is about a 45 minute drive, you will find 3 hospitals there. Pittsburg is about a 25 minute drive, where you will find 1 good sized hospital. Columbus, KS is probably where you will find the closest pharmacy and 1 small hospital, Google Maps puts Columbus, KS 17 minutes away from West Mineral. It's not quite as desolate as you may think in SE Kansas, but only you can decide for yourself. BTW, I worked in West Virginia back in 2018 near Moundsville, WV to down south of New Martinsville, WV. I loved the folks and the land wherever I went in West Virginia.

If you got on the bridge and someone else was already there, you had to back off and let them come across. Pretty scary. I had a summer job in Lowell and had to take that bridge. Been there, I need to go back, few years ago now they drug in little Brutis built by the Markley family way back when. Close to here is the Corona Railroad museum, not a lot but it has the old Boston Missouri railroad station which i vaguely remember before being moved by the Stockdales before being moved and restored by the Corona RR museum, nice to see it as it was when my dad would catch a train to go to Lamar. Then they would walk home the 5 miles.

When I was in Junior High while on geology field trip we visited strip mine in which Brutus was at work! Awesome! The cables that supplied electricity were as big around as fire hoses.

I’m from Kansas and have visited Big Brutus several times over the years. Raw numbers are interesting but to give its size perspective, the two little things just barely visible on the ground close to Brutus are a small (maybe 5 ton capacity shovel or crane and a D4 Caterpillar crawler tractor. In its last years of operation the electricity bill was something like $36,000.00 per month. Government regulations plus other costs vs the price of coal forced its shut down. The only larger shovel, The Captain, Marion 6360, was originally operated by Southwest Illinois Coal Company which later became Arch Coal, was over twice as heavy as Brutus at 28,000,000 pounds. It was operated until 1991 when it was gutted by fire and deemed to expensive to repair. There’s good fishing and hunting all around West Mineral on public land called the Mined Land Wildlife Area. Also a nice static railroad equipment display at nearby Scammon.

When my kids were little, i took them to West Mineral and to see Big Brutus. Unfortunately, the museum was closed that day, and we never made it back down there.

Coroner ruled that he accidentally fell before he could jump. He was a 49 year old dentist from Arkansas. I believe they had already stopped letting people climb the boom and he was doing it illegally at 4 am. He was trespassing. I’m from Kansas and have visited Big Brutus several times over the years. I don’t even remember the incident. Normally I would have called it thinning the gene pool but it was probably too late for that.

If you want to see a live dragline in action go to Beulah North Dakota. It’s electric and just might give Brutus a run for his money 👍🏻

I grew up with horses. I rode them a lot but what I wanted most and never got was a dirt bike. Horses weren't into hill climbing competitions although horses can climb hills just fine. You risk hurting the animal if you push it's limits. On a dirt bike you risk your own limbs.

you got it correct, this machine ran on a electric extension cord. Brutus did not move Cole it removed the overburden, and other machines took the Cole away.

My father was born in a small northern Wisconsin mining town named Pence. His uncle John was the postmaster and Had a barbershop in the back. Wonder if that was commonplace back in the 1930's? Coool video.
