I was an early adopter of the Canon 10-22mm EFS lens. I use it for Real Estate photography. I've probably taken 90% of my pictures with that lens. It stays on 10mm most of the time and I use bipedal zooming outdoors. I can say, that it would be a tough lens to dethrone my 10-22. I would not mind an IS version, but I shoot with flash exclusively indoors. Thanks for the review. Your reviews hit all of my high points for lens shopping.
@EricMustardman2 жыл бұрын
@Christopher Frost I bought the 10-20 mm/3.5 about 7.5 years ago. I use it for landscape and indoor shooting and have been very happy with the results ever since. As of f/8 it's tack sharp from corner to corner, but only if you set the AF point correctly and have the proper distance to your focus point. You can't get everything sharp from 1 m to infinity, not even at f/11 or f/16, no matter how you set the focus point. BTW: Your reviews are always a pleasure to watch, please keep up the excellent work. Stay safe and God's blessing on you.

Keep in mind one thing. In the 10mm position, the diagonal openings angle is 105 degrees on Nikon DX. In the test shot, if the frontdoor is at 10 meters , the far corner is at 17 meters, so IT CANNOT BE in focus. No matter how far you stop down. Try the shot again with a bigger building, at 200 meters distance. You will be surprised.
@Eikenhorst2 жыл бұрын
You are right, you could solve this by making the lens focus distance further for the edges. In fact I suspect that is done to make razor sharp wide angle lenses like the Sony 14mm F1.8 GM, which can't possibly be as sharp in the corners of the test chart as the distance to the lens is much larger than in the center.

You’ve only got to look at his own photos to see the lens is sharp in the corners. Look at the library indoor shot, perfectly sharp in the corners that are on the focal plane.

@@Pozi_Drive He says it was soft in the corners, and it clearly isn’t when the subject is in focus, like the one in the library. I’m agreeing with your original comment, it’s not soft, it’s out of focus in the house photo because of the distance from the lens.

I've been using this lens for Real Estate Photography for almost 4 years. Its great but does suffer from significant chromatic aberration and barrel distortion at 10mm, both of which can be cleaned up in post, but it would be really cool not to have to take the time to do that. Time is money!
@SPTSuperSprinter1565 жыл бұрын
Corner to corner sharpness in very challenging conditions at extreme ends of the lens parameters is simply not going to be on the table on a lens at this price point - to suggest it should be is unrealistic. Reviews like this, while useful, also seek to push the boundaries of usage past normal to bring out the very worst in the lens, as seen in the first batch of test images (the outside of the building). The pictures that came afterwards, which were of real subjects in a variety of settings, were hard to find any fault with, save for a tiny amount of CA on the piano keys, and these are the parts that are most useful - not test charts. Bearing in mind that lenses almost universally perform their worst at the extremes (focal length, aperture settings) it would have been useful to see you do some comparisons at 12 and 18mm. I had the f4-5.6 version of this lens long ago and absolutely loved it. it too had some wacky barrel distortion (that seemed to follow no pattern) at 10mm, but it was something you had to go looking for and specifically shoot a particularly framed subject to show it in. Something (i don't know what) possessed me to sell it. I'm now in the market for an ultrawide again and given the f4-5.6 is now hard to get hold of, it's entirely likely i'll get the 3.5. Not too fussed over the larger filter thread though, as it looks like it could actually house a regular 77mm filter size, and that they just made it larger for... reasons.

A question about the Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 lens: When attached to a mirrorless camera via a dumb adaptor, meaning the lens isn't communicating with the camera, do you know what aperture the lens defaults to? I'm assuming f3.5, but I wonder is it perhaps the last aperture you were using when you had the lens on a camera that could electronically communicate with it?

Great review! The only complaint is one I've mentioned before: On a crop body, the f-value is not what they put on the box. You must multiply by the crop factor. The producers are dishonest about their f-value because they want to sell their lens. So, even though this is a lens designed for APS-C cameras, the equivalent f-value compared to full frame is not 3.5 but 5.6. You mention the equivalent focal length compared to full frame, so I don't see why the equivalent f-value would be less worthy of a mention.
@convergepk9 жыл бұрын
***** I agree, but you are only partly right. It is still the same f-value, whether the lens is designed for full frame or aps-c only. You get the same amount of light and the same shutter speeds. But the difference is in the way the image looks, mainly speaking bokeh. If you want to achieve the same result as with a full frame f3.5, you would need an f2.3 or something like that on aps-c (same as the crop factor), due the different sensor sizes. So yes equivalent f-value is worth mentioning, but only for looks/bokeh not for shutter speeds. Nevertheless, great review as always Christopher Frost Photography Thanks a lot!Christopher Frost Photography
@smaakjeks9 жыл бұрын
convergepk "You get the same amount of light and the same shutter speeds." Nope. Smaller sensor means less surface area per pixel, meaning fewer photons hit each pixel (compared to a larger sensor with the same pixel-count). That means less light.
@smaakjeks9 жыл бұрын
***** And since such a comparison was made for focal length in this review, I felt justified in mentioning the aperture's equivalent value. Many companies list the focal length equivalent of full frame, because a longer focal length is often attractive. They do not do that with the f-value, and that is annoying. A way to combat that dishonesty is to raise awareness about it. For example in reviews.
@christopherfrost9 жыл бұрын
Well, yes and no. When you use this lens on an APS-C camera, its equivalent depth of field will only be about f/5.6, as you say. However, in terms of how much light the lens gathers, it's still f/3.5, so, the lens's brightness is not affected by the APS-C sensor. Also, the f/number refers to the physical dimensions of the lens's glass elements, so technically the company is correct to say it's f/3.5. I see where you're coming from, though - if they were being super honest, then lens companies could make a note on their boxes that the equivalent depth of field is increased if you're using a camera with an APS-C (or even smaller) sensor.
@smaakjeks9 жыл бұрын
Christopher Frost Photography We are saying the same thing. I never wrote, or meant, that the lens somehow changes properties depending on which camera you put it on. Neither the focal length or aperture actually change. That would be a very neat magic trick. The lens is what it is.

Some lenses change the max aperture while zooming, for example some kit lenses are 3.5-5.6 which means if you shoot at 3.5 and then zoom all the way in, the aperture will close to 5.6. To avoid any confusion, a "fixed" aperture does let you change it to other settings like 5.6 or 8 like you asked and if you choose the max aperture (in this case 3.5) it will not change when zooming.

I want to buy an ultra wide angle lens...what would u suggest 1. Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 2. Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8

For a mirrorless Canon, would you recommend this one over their EF-M 11-22mm for serious videography?
@christopherfrost6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, well the 11-22 does have image stabilization which is helpful, but this lens has that nice f/3.5 maximum aperture, so if you're using a tripod or electronic gimbal it would be best

Thank you that's what I've been thinking

Does this go with the Nikon D3300 DX camera body? Can it also be used on a Nikon FX model in case I upgrade to one? Thanks!

Yes if you get the Nikon version, but it won't work properly on FX

Chris, is there any chance you could retest the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5?
@christopherfrost5 жыл бұрын
Why?
@bobchristensen48973 жыл бұрын
@@christopherfrost I just watched this video again. Here's the problem that I see but maybe I have it wrong but, when you shoot the wall the distance from your lens to the door is say 15 feet. If you measure to the top of the building where the corner of the picture is your probably measuring 25-30 feet to the lens. That would explain why stopping down the aperture sharpens the corners. Also most lenses are sharper stopped down a stop or two.

Does this lens support D5600 Nikon F t mount ? I'm planning to buy it from ebay at 230$ 😢

+Christopher Frost Photography Why "definitely" Chris? for optical quality over the more fast-wide Sigma? sharper? Anyway, as I can see in reviews the Tokina 11-16 or new 11-20 are sharper and faster-wide than Sigma an Canon, Do you agree? And one more question! I want it also for video so I wonder if we do have autofocus in live view mode with this two Tokina lens? Thanks

Hi, I'm an amateur astrophotographer and I'm thinking about getting this lense because I want wide angle photos of the Milkyway. How do you think this lense works when taking photos of stars?
@christopherfrost6 жыл бұрын
It'll be okay. Personally I'd prefer the Samyang 16mm f/2 although I'm not sure if it'd be wide angle enough
@AllahBoinkedMe5 жыл бұрын
@@christopherfrost Hi, fwiw I'm pulling the trigger on the Sigma 10-16 f/3.5 specifically/exclusively for astrophotography shots, primarily the Milky Way. That type of image is a bit more forgiving in regards to vignetting, ISO 'noise', and various distortions (Coma & Barrel concerning me most atm). I'm looking very much forward to having a wide angle zoom in my kit and after (too) much deliberation on my part I am at peace with the choice being a Sigma (btw, 1st/Only Sigma in my kit atm .. I do have a Tokina 100mm f/2.8 Macro (LUV it) and my other lenses are all Nikons). Cheers

that terrible softness in the corners is a huge deal breaker for such a lens which is normally used for landscape photography!

can the autofocus noise be fixed with a shotgun mic or no??? recommend for vlogging?
@christopherfrost8 жыл бұрын
It will but only if you move the shotgun mic avay from your camera. If the shotgun mic is attached to your camera it will still pick up some autofocus noise, annoyingly
@RhioneBravo8 жыл бұрын
thank you for the reply i appreciate it :D i was thinking of this lens or the tokina for my canon 70D since they have constant apertures which i need for my low light adventure vlogs, but the only thing im worried about is the AF noise, im using a rode videomic go which i will be mounting on a v-shoe mount pretty soon

Tough critic with tough demands - all of which may be fair. But for the rest of us who aren't publishing or professional photographers, how does it hold up? For me I'm very pleased with the lens.
