Yes agreed, my 3 months old Sigma 100-400mm DG DN OS has similar softness AFTER the 1st shot in burst. The sharpest is always the 1st (talking about great sharpness), 2nd shot onwards were all softer, usable but not as sharp as the 1st, all the time. Professional IQ and a perfect addition to the Tamron trilogy, 17-28, 28-75 & 70-180. Have been using this lens for two weeks with an a7iii and am more than satisfied with the results. Very sharp, great compression, quick focus, tracks fast moving surfers and seagulls well and is lighter than a Tamron 70-200 G2. Picked up a Haoge Lens Collar from Amazon, $50 US. In my experience the performance of this lens is beyond hobbyist level and compliments the zoom range beyond a 70-200/70-180.

If you had to choose between this and the Sony 70-350, which would be your choice?
@orlangurs4 жыл бұрын
I do own both of them, and I'd say Sigma is better for the price. I bought 70-350 in March 2020 when Sigma lens wasn't yet announced and I do think now it was a hasty decision. Sony 70-350 is lighter, smaller and it's max aperture is a little wider, but Sigma has better image quality, bokeh and colors, and those IMO are more significant advantages. 70-350 is an APS-C only lens (and I do have A7III and a6300, I can't use it with FF camera without losing image quality) + I don't think Sony will make a teleconverter specifically for this lens, when there is a chance Sigma will eventually release one for theirs. It's only an opinion, we do use both of them with different cameras with my GF when we are going for pictures of birds and animals. But If I had to choose I'd choose Sigma.

@@yellit1975 I'd say you should try both of them with your camera and decide. For an APS-C body it may seem big and bulky and therefore frustrating to use. And also an AF may be an issue: while it works quick and accurate on A7III, on a6300 it seems to be a lot slower. Not sure if it will be an issue with newer cameras.

70-350 is a crop lens. I don't suggest buying aps-c if you're going to go full frame in the future. FF is reverse compatible with a crop, apsc lenses are not. The Sigma is a bit better built but the Sony has better AF for fast objects. Both very sharp!

Thanks Stefan. I bought this lens for my A7R3 having previously owned a EF version and used a MC11 adaptor and was happy with that too. This lens is even sharper than the EF version which was already great. For static subjects the autofocus is fine but I was a little underwhelmed with tracking BIF - really no better than the previous adapted version. Mine seems to do what yours does which is first shot is in focus then constantly misses the next shots in sequence - so I think there is need for a firmware fix hopefully. I may try some BIF with the IS turned off as I have seen comments in general that IS slows down focus for BIF. Despite this it's a great and practical lens and not too big for taking on hikes etc.

With OIS the 2nd shot is 100% not sharp, 3rd is usually even worse (A7C medium speed). Also happens with static subjects. Day1 reviewers probably thought its the AF and they were forbidden to talk about it. Now there are many good reviews around about a 100-400 you basically can't use in burst. It is a good review!, you should compare a 100-400 zoom lens with a another the same NOT a 70-300 zoom lens. It is what it is " you get what you pay for" and although it is a good lens for the price still just an entry level zoom

Ok, now confusion . E 70-350 is is the same price range. Hmz... compare please 😂

The 70-350 is a crop lens and the Sigma is FF for the record. Very close in performance. Sony will be better with fast moving AF consistency in my experience.

@@StefanMalloch Just now checked that was the same question ;) But if we go to 6000 series, so Sony has focus , sigma extra Zoom due crop ;) thx

Its the effort that counts.

No portraitures and yes it is sharp enough for pro work. I strongly disagree with you there.

Sharpness isn't contested. Its the AF that falls short. For a birding and sports, I don't recommend it. A great versatile budget shooter for sure.

I have 3 of my friends with professional cameras and lenses and they produce worst images than my phone ,so it's not up to the gear as always , cheers ☺️
