Yes agreed, my 3 months old Sigma 100-400mm DG DN OS has similar softness AFTER the 1st shot in burst. The sharpest is always the 1st (talking about great sharpness), 2nd shot onwards were all softer, usable but not as sharp as the 1st, all the time. Thanks Stephan for your videos, am a subscriber and we're also in the same photography FB group too.

Professional IQ and a perfect addition to the Tamron trilogy, 17-28, 28-75 & 70-180. Have been using this lens for two weeks with an a7iii and am more than satisfied with the results. Very sharp, great compression, quick focus, tracks fast moving surfers and seagulls well and is lighter than a Tamron 70-200 G2. Picked up a Haoge Lens Collar from Amazon, $50 US. In my experience the performance of this lens is beyond hobbyist level and compliments the zoom range beyond a 70-200/70-180.

Thanks for doing this video. I’ve had this lens for several months. I use it a lot for photographing the moon. I set it for manual focus and notice that at F11, the manual focus ring is not as tight as I would like. Also it appears that the USB doc and teleconverter are only available for the L-mount. I have a Sony a7iii.

Great review! I shoot indoors at religious services with four Sony cameras utilizing a BlackMagic ATEM Mini Pro for changing between camera angles with my lenses set at different focal lengths. My results are always more than satisfactory. So, I just purchased my second Sigma 100-400 for the Sony e-mount. Got a great deal on this one used from KEH and rated at E+ condition. Needless to say, very happy with its performance even in a pretty well lit interior venue. Keep up the good work! Happy New Year!!!

If you had to choose between this and the Sony 70-350, which would be your choice?
@orlangurs
@orlangurs 4 жыл бұрын
I do own both of them, and I'd say Sigma is better for the price. I bought 70-350 in March 2020 when Sigma lens wasn't yet announced and I do think now it was a hasty decision. Sony 70-350 is lighter, smaller and it's max aperture is a little wider, but Sigma has better image quality, bokeh and colors, and those IMO are more significant advantages. 70-350 is an APS-C only lens (and I do have A7III and a6300, I can't use it with FF camera without losing image quality) + I don't think Sony will make a teleconverter specifically for this lens, when there is a chance Sigma will eventually release one for theirs. It's only an opinion, we do use both of them with different cameras with my GF when we are going for pictures of birds and animals. But If I had to choose I'd choose Sigma.

@orlangurs
@orlangurs 4 жыл бұрын
@@yellit1975 I'd say you should try both of them with your camera and decide. For an APS-C body it may seem big and bulky and therefore frustrating to use. And also an AF may be an issue: while it works quick and accurate on A7III, on a6300 it seems to be a lot slower. Not sure if it will be an issue with newer cameras.

70-350 is a crop lens. I don't suggest buying aps-c if you're going to go full frame in the future. FF is reverse compatible with a crop, apsc lenses are not. The Sigma is a bit better built but the Sony has better AF for fast objects. Both very sharp!

@@StefanMalloch I know, I have the 70-350. I just bought an A7Rii and i still use that lens since it's the only one i have right now at those focal ranges. I was just curious how this one compares to that. Since you can put a FF camera into APS-C mode to get some extra reach.

Nice review! I'm still trying to decide for the cheap outdoor tele for outdoor sport photos: -> Sony 70 300 G -> Tamron 70 300 -> Sigma 100 400 I was thinking about Sigma 100 400 DN , but I do not like the AF issues you mentioned - the hispeed burst are "the must have" for me... I owned and sold the Sony 70-300G and have owned this Sigma 100-400 for two weeks. In my experience the Sony 700-300 produces a hard, edgy image with busy bokeh. I did not like the lens. @@pawelmod3292 Typically takes me more than a few outings to firm up my opinion on a new lens. @@tomirwinphoto Thanks! I know other reviews, and most of them were published together with official announcement from Sigma. Thanks Stefan. I bought this lens for my A7R3 having previously owned a EF version and used a MC11 adaptor and was happy with that too. This lens is even sharper than the EF version which was already great. For static subjects the autofocus is fine but I was a little underwhelmed with tracking BIF - really no better than the previous adapted version. Mine seems to do what yours does which is first shot is in focus then constantly misses the next shots in sequence - so I think there is need for a firmware fix hopefully. I may try some BIF with the IS turned off as I have seen comments in general that IS slows down focus for BIF. Despite this it's a great and practical lens and not too big for taking on hikes etc.

I don't shoot at telephoto focal lengths nearly often enough to justify any outlay really... So my "go to" is still an ancient Tamron A-mount 70-300 with the EA4 adapter! But anything beating that is still gonna cost me close to a grand, which makes for very expensive shots - not worth it.

I own the E 70-350 G (eq105 - 350) and I have used it most for wildlife (I normaly photograph landscape). I never had it on a tripod, it is much faster to point in the right direction when you handhold the camera. And with a shutterspeed of 1/1000 or fastet that's no problems. And I always use widest aperture. Corner sharpnes isn't the most important thing in wildlife photography..

Have you tried sony 70-350 and sigma 100-400?

@@danielfernandezlongueira9591 I own the 70-350 and have used it for 4 months. It is better than what I expected. I have never tried the Sigma 100-400. If you have plans to upgrade to full frame then buy the Sigma. On full frame an APS-C lens will give you less than half the megapixels. 10,6 on a7iii, 18,6 on a7Riii and 27 on a7Riv.

My go to telephoto is a "Old School" Quantaray 135-400mm used for portraits. AF is not fast enough for wildlife, but the images I get are so good and unique. Great Vid.😀👍

A diligent search will locate a fourth party version of the tripod collar for half the cost of the Sigma model. I found one on Amazon and can recommend it.

Guess I should have ignored the day1 "reviews". I've read and watched multiple reviews before ordering, yours is the first mentioning the burst issue. With OIS the 2nd shot is 100% not sharp, 3rd is usually even worse (A7C medium speed). Also happens with static subjects. Day1 reviewers probably thought its the AF and they were forbidden to talk about it. Now there are many good reviews around about a 100-400 you basically can't use in burst. Didn't expect such deceiving behavior from Sigma.

Unfortunately. Kind of defeats the purpose of a wildlife lens.

How so? You can easily sharpen and image but you can't recover missed focus.

A nice review but I couldn’t help but notice how many times you put it down when compared to the Sony G master. Unfair comparison and a disservice to an honest review. We all know the G master is in a league of its own. No need to mention it. You should be comparing it to the Sony 70-300 g lens.

It is a good review!, you should compare a 100-400 zoom lens with a another the same NOT a 70-300 zoom lens. It is what it is " you get what you pay for" and although it is a good lens for the price still just an entry level zoom

The 70-350 is a crop lens and the Sigma is FF for the record. Very close in performance. Sony will be better with fast moving AF consistency in my experience.

Sharpness isn't contested. Its the AF that falls short. For a birding and sports, I don't recommend it. A great versatile budget shooter for sure.
