Very interesting. Is this happening every time with every lens? I have been using clear image zoom without realizing I am losing light. This makes me a bit sceptical as I was planning to use it as an all around not having to buy the 30mm or 18-35. Thanks
@ChristopherBurress7 жыл бұрын
+Dimitrios Gial it's not that you are losing light. It's the framing and the DOF that makes the image LOOK like it's a smaller aperture. Your exposure values won't change. But you are essentially cropping the image just like if you were shooting on a smaller sensor, so the same crop effects take place.
@1234filmsgr7 жыл бұрын
Christopher Burress I see, that makes sense, thank you Christopher.
@张佐7 жыл бұрын
BTW, a crop sensor on ISO100 looks like full-frame on ISO200. Exposure level does the same, but effectively, corp lenses are losing one stop of light.

I have the A6000, and I want to upgrade to my 1st prime lens. I’ve been debating the sigma 30mm 1.4 but this lens keeps tugging on me. Only thing I worry about is the barrel distortion. I do some landscape/urban photography but I also want to attempt portraits. Not to close but a fair distance away to capture the background as well. I want the 16mm because it looks sharper then the 30 mm... is this as easy as you showed us in post to correct the distortion? I want the sharpness of this lens but not that effect. Hey thanks for the upload! I have a question because im on the edge of purchasing this lens. I currently have the 10-18mm and love it but i travel a lot and go to a ton of night markets and need a camera that will do well in low light. i love my wide angle at 10mm and the ability to get closer at 18mm, which the sigma lacks. but i understand that this sigma lens is what i need for low light settings SO... 1) as an owner of the 10-18, do you have ANY buyers remorse thinking that you could've gotten along well with the 10-18 instead of the purchasing the sigma? 2) if you do not have buyers remorse and use the sigma lens, how much of the time are you using the sigma compared to the sony? ie 60/40? 100/0? Thanks. I would appreciate your help.
@ChristopherBurress7 жыл бұрын
+Austin Yarbrough man, hmm... It's tough to say. 16mm is pretty wide and you should be able to get away with using it in a lot of scenarios. But if I were to vlog another trip I think I would wish I had the 10-18 because it's so versatile in that arena. If you shoot a lot at night I think you will fall in love with the f/1.4. Since this Sigma 16mm F1.4 is reasonably priced and sharp, Mr Burress, do you think this lens will be a great value lens to be used in the A7R Mark 3 as a 24mm F2 shooter? In crop mode, it will still offers 18mp. I'm not expecting this Sigma to be able to compete with the likes of Sony's 24/1.4 or the Batis 25/F2 but if the differences are not too far, it will make this the best ever "value for the money" lens and I'm not surprised if this lens under crop mode could beat out the Sony's FE 28/F2 prime.

@CurroBlanquer6 жыл бұрын
A short update, this summer I tested another copy. It was much better copy. The focus work almost well with FC but not with punctual or FS, always better with manual because a light backfocus problem, no way to fix it, so under F 2.8 if you want perfect focus you need to do it manually. Also I tested three copies of 30mm F1.4, the same problems with the focus, 2 copies very bad and one decent over 2.8, below you have to use manual focus (backfocus when it is close a close object and front focus when it is a far object). I don't understand why only the Germans talk about this. The glass is very good, the best you can find for Sony a6000 series, but the focus with short range of focus definitely not.

Woah, I didn’t expect you to reply this quick. Anyway, what if i prioritise potrait shooting more? I can see the 30mm will be the clear winner here.
@ChristopherBurress7 жыл бұрын
+Syariqul Fizry yeah if you prioritize portraits the 30mm will be much better for you
@syariqulfizry61507 жыл бұрын
Christopher Burress alrightyy, maybe i’ll go for this one. Thank heaps!

I'm actually also deciding on whether to go for the 30mm or this one. If you enable profile correction on portraits is that going to mess it up completely or should that work? Both of your vids are great thanks a bunch really clear and helpful!

I have a Sony 6300 and I used only for foto not videos. Without body stabilization and without tripod it will come out some blurry images with Sigma right?
@ChristopherBurress6 жыл бұрын
Only if you are shooting with slower shutter speeds. People used cameras without stabilization for the better part of a century without any problems.

How does this frame look when cropped to 120fps video recording? Would it all just look like a 30mm lens.. thus defeating the purpose of this even being considered wide angle... ? I wish Sony would just release a freaking 10mm at 2.8f at least
@mohamedhussari9817 жыл бұрын
Today in Stavanger Norway at Japan Photo Store they replace my sigma 16mm copy with new copy and they tested with my a6500 and the blurry portrait pictures at f2.5 and f2.8 is remain, however the staff at the store tested the new copy with a6300 and a6000 and the blurry at f2.5 f2.8 is still remain the same. So what is going on to sigma copies three cameras my a6500 and two cameras from the store one is a6300 and the other a6000 and we get very blurry portrait pictures on AF-S.

I use lightroom cc (not classic) and I can't find the sigma 16mm 1.4 in the lens correction list. Can anyone help me with that?
@christineliu82947 жыл бұрын
HELP! I already have a sony35mm OSS prime lens. It’s so useful for portraits. However, I wish it could be wider sometimes for shooting indoor and shooting at architecture. I also owned the 16-50kit lens but it’s not a good lens for me. I’m thinking about getting the new release sigma16mm f1.4 for emount. Does everyone think it’s a good idea? Cuz I think 35+kit combo is so compact and good for girls. Is a wide angle really worth buying?
@ChristopherBurress7 жыл бұрын
+Daisy Liu I always like having a wide angle. If the 16mm kit is wide enough for you then I would get this for the spectacular image quality and fast aperture.
@christineliu82947 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Burress Do you mean I should buy the sigma 16 1.4? Is it so perfect with 35 1.8 that I don’t need the zoom lens16-50 anymore?
@ChristopherBurress7 жыл бұрын
+Daisy Liu if 16mm is wide enough for you and you need the higher image quality and faster aperture then it's a good choice.

Christopher Burress :I have 50mm f1.8 on a6000 and problem is shootings indoors in tight space.. do you recommend sigma 16 f1.4 as a good overall lens for portraits as well as landscape ?
@djremotion27 жыл бұрын
Can you do this versus 10-18 immediately?
@ChristopherBurress7 жыл бұрын
+EE DESIGN I will do my best!
@djremotion27 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Would you rather buy E24 F1.8 CZ or this if money was no object? I have had offered that Zeiss lens for my 10-18.
@ChristopherBurress7 жыл бұрын
+EE DESIGN that's a tough call. I think you will be able to shoot people better with the 24mm, you have to get really close with the 16mm to fill the frame. E
@djremotion27 жыл бұрын
I dont really almost ever photograph people. I would preper imho that 16 to shoot interior and achitecture and such and then I have 50f18 which I use to photo products and details. That E24 would be very useful in that same segment though. But for landscape it is boring to my eye.
@ChristopherBurress7 жыл бұрын
+EE DESIGN Yeah if you want architecture and non person subjects I would say go for this lens. It's good.

I just bought this, but it doesn't fit my a6000 camera with e-mount, have somebody experienced the same ? Do I need any adapter to success ?
@ChristopherBurress7 жыл бұрын
+Francisco Moo it should fit without any problem. I don't think that this lens is made for any different mount than e mount so that shouldn't be a problem...

I own the lens and I think the manual focus is pretty terrible on it (like all the focus by wire lenses), its way too sensitive
@EverythingFilmmaking7 жыл бұрын
Love mine..It fringes way way less then Sonys 10mm-18mm F/4 lens.

Thanks for pointing out how raw files are easily corrected using Lightroom. My question is, if you shoot raw + jpg, are the jpgs already corrected by the camera? I'd look at jpgs again for CA, barrel distortion and light falloff.

Great review. Thank you! I don't have the sigma 16 1.4 selectable in my lens correction drop down. Do you know where I can download the lens profile from? Thanks. G

I noticed the a6000 doesn't correct distortion in JPEG using this lens. Is this expected, and must be corrected in post-production?
