Hello Peter! Nice video. I have a question, what do yo think about this sigma when compared to Olympus 17mm f1.8, do you think the IQ is that much (or any) better to consider an upgrade? Thank you. PS I (as I assume many of your subscribers) would really appreciate if you could do comparison videos between these sigma 1.4 lenses (16, 30, 56mm) and Olympus’s 1.8 primes (17, 25, 45mm). It is hard to compare with actually putting them side by sode against each other. 17mm f1.2 pro is a very nice. It has a very nice feathered bokeh. Sigma is also very nice, but it is a bit different and a lot cheaper too. If I have to given an estimate I would say 8.

Hmm... I'm going to be taking a trip to London next year, and will have an E-M5 MkIII with me. Right now I have the MkII. It normally wears the 12-40 f/2.8, which is my favorite lens of all time. I want to get a faster prime to carry with me in case indoor shooting (I do video and stills) would benefit from a wide, fast prime. The Panasonic 15mm f/1.7 and the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 are at the top of the list as they are fast and yet on the small end. The Sigma 16mm looks nice, but it's pretty big. I'm not sure I'd want to lug that around... Is it in any way (aside from the slightly greater aperture value) really better than the aforementioned lenses?
@ForsgardPeter5 жыл бұрын
All of those lenses are good lenses. Panasonic 15mm f1.7 I have not tested. The 17mm f1.8 is a great lens. I made a video about that lens: kzbin.info/aero/PLDi4hF9-cy6hOlu0_KjPw1MqWqoRfvRM0 Sigma 16mm f1.4 has some weather sealing so that is Sigma's advantage.

I'm on the fence with Zuiko 17mm 1.8 and this Sigma. Looking at resolution tests Sigma wins and can be compared even with Zuiko 17mm 1.2 PRO. What speaks for the 17mm 1.8 however, is its size, which is better for mountain hiking or regular travel with street photography. This is really a hard choice:(

It is a tough choice. Both lenses are quite good.

Hi Peter, you are not only very professional, but very entertaining as well. I like your sense of humor very much. Now to the subject: What do you think about this lens in terms of value for money? I planned to buy 17mm 1.2, but right now this Sigma 1.4 is really quite cheap, 3x cheaper than the certainly great Oly, at least in my country. Would you be able to distinguish the outcome of the 2 lenses side by side, without knowing which image is shot with which lens? Have a great day and keep the fantastic work moving on.

It would be very hard to compare the images if you did not know which lens was used. Sigma is very good value for the money. Thanks.

I would like to have lens with this specification. But Olympus 45mm/f1.8 is tiny and weights nothing. Panasonic 20mm/f1.7 is small and weight is insignificant. This one has equivalent size and weight to Panasonic 45-200mm which I'm using rarely due to it's size (and image quality above 120mm)

Dear Peter, marvelous images - but i had to wait about 6 minutes (out of 10) for the first shot and another minute for a small sequence of images. No deeper information on focus, color, sharpness and general IQ. So I have got only a faint idea of this lens. Please less fun and more content the next time! The first generation of those Sigma DN lenses had a focal length of 2.8 so I decided to buy the "nearest" Olympus ones of f1.8 - the 60 f2.8 because it is a macro lens.

I still can’t shake sigmas legacy reputation for mediocre images and poor build quality. Maybe they are better now, but I just can’t reconcile their near premium pricing with my previous experiences. Unfairly or not, I will always look upon sigma as a compromise.

Mike Barber because we now live in a world where proprietary firmware updates come fast and often, and an update can hobble a device running third party software or hardware, I’m just no longer willing to take those chances with my money or risk to my equipment uptime. If Olympus, Canon or Nikon have confidence in Sigma lenses, then they can put their names on them and take full responsibility for the products to function as it says on the box. When that happens I’ll have no care about who manufactures the lens. My experiences with sigma branded products and with sigma the company has cost me too much in frustration and negative emotions to compensate for any monetary savings or claims of superior performance. I still have occasional problems, but without introducing third party grips, batteries, lenses or unknown technology into the mix, the camera manufactures are more able and even seem more willing to get me up and running faster. Unquestionable product support without any finger pointing is of more value to me than a little extra edge sharpness and $100.

Well Peter, the lens IS 16mm and that is what it really IS in full frame, not 32mm. For an APS-C that crops 1.5x it sees what a 24mm does, correct, but for a 2x crop like the micro-four-thirds (MFT) it is equivalent to a 32mm lens. But thanks for the review, it's all about what it can do on your camera, not math class.
