My initial idea after getting M10 with 12-42 EZ 3,5-5,6 was to have hobby-grade equipment which does not scream "expensive". 12-42 EZ on the small body like M10 actually screamed "compact" therefore "cheap". Even when the lens was capable to do most work i needed for hobby purposes, i realized it has almost no bokeh, and that i use to take photos during the night or in dark environments. I usually take photos on concerts, parties and ocassionally cosplayers, and even when the zoom range was perfect, lack of bokeh needed a fix. I was still getting "hobby" equipment so i ended up with really small M.Zuiko 45mm/F1,8 which looks to me like a spiritual successor to famous portrait lens - Zeiss Pancolar 80mm/f1,8. When i was comparing photos done by those two lenses, i could not tell the difference. I tested 45/f1,8 on a concert and it was best set i ever did. Even when its a perfect portrait lens, its focal lenght is bit too short for open-air festivals so I took 75mm/f1,8 which has similar qualities. Lenses without zoom are great, but you need to move a lot, and in a full club or a festival its not always an option. Also it became clear that these kind of events pose risks of rain, dust ... and even worse - beer :D. The other factor was that you sometimes want to get the attention/agreement of potential subject on a photo. Smaller lenses do not have this psychological effect - you cannot just point on the camera and person will understand you want a photo, or he would not agree. So weather sealing, F2,8, bokeh, size and pro-look were the reasons why i got myself M. Zuiko 12-40 F2,8 PRO. MF clutch, really great manual zoom and L-Fn button were just great bonus to already great lens. Its the best all-round lens i ever had and I can use it for any purpose. Since then it became my main lens, while i carry around 45mm/F1,8 when i want to do portraits. 12-42 EZ then became by backup main lens, M10 later followed the suite as my requirements on weather-sealing and pro-look extended to the camera body when i recently got M5 Mark III.

9:10 I think the 12-40mm f/2.8 is stellar. The PRO lenses give a different photography experience. Since I got it (plus the 75mm f/1.8), my photography has just improved up a notch because I have lower light shooting and can control depth of field well. It gives more creative options satisfaction and has a very superior feel to the kit lenses, though it's heavier. However, if I want small, light lenses, I use a prime like 17mm f/1.8 or 45mm f/1.8. I shot a concert recently with the 12-40 and the 75. They were indispensable and I didn't hesitate to use them wide open or close to wide open in the low light moments.

I started with the 14-150mm f/4-5.6 II on my EM5-II. I now use the EM1-II and have used the other PRO lenses as well [12-40, the 12-100 and the 40-150]. I can honestly say that that the most cost efficient, and probably my favorite, is still the 14-150. It is weather sealed, least expensive, smallest, lightest and has great range/reach and versatility. My next favorite is the 12-100. In hindsight, after getting the 12-100 I wish I never bought the 12-40. I suppose if you ask N photographers regarding their favorite lens you will probably get N+1 opinions. I am avid enthusiast who shoots landscapes, people, street photography and anything that moves and stands still.

I am in the same boat. I think I really regret selling my 14-150. I was just checking my catalog and interestingly my 4star and higher pictures are all with 14-150 only because of versatility and not quality. 14-150 with a bunch of specific primes are good and cheap for many people.

I have the 12-40 and it was my main lens for some time. I’ve now got the 12-100 and a 17mm 1.2 for my fast prime and walkabout when I want to get creative with a prime. Now I have those 2 lenses my 12-40 hasn’t been used. Maybe I should sell it, but used values are low so I’ll probably hang on to it.

I'm waffling. I have fallen in love with the 25mm 1.8 and the 17mm 1.8 primes and have pretty much stopped shooting with zooms aside from the 14-150. When I travel light I carry 1 prime and the zoom. Could this replace the f1.8 and give me satisfying results? I wonder.

Hi, I had some primes and the 40-150 and decided to buy the 12-100 when it was launched. Versatile lens as it is, I found it just a bit heavy to carry around daily and bought a used 12-40 as well. The 12-40 is much better balanced for the EM1 MkII for regular use and really covers the majority of situations. The 12-100 is of course longer but then when I need long I need longer still, like the 40-150mm with 1.4 converter. I haven't decided to sell the 12-100 just yet though! A second (used) body might be a better option if you hate to swap lenses.

datachamp good feedback. Maybe that’s why they made this new 12-200mm. Of course it’s a daylight lens but for a family trip to the zoo for example, it could be the correct choice if you’re not interested in carrying a ton of gear.

I'd like to have the Oly 12-40 or Panasonic's 12-35 but the trusty old 14-54 is comparable and the cost to benefits analysis says I don't really need either of the other two. I go through my catalog from time to time and I see I have improved from a technical standpoint.
@BertRavelli5 жыл бұрын
I have a though question. You mentioned frequently you use the lense for travel. I'm often in the mountains with my M1II and need compact glass to keep weight and volume down. Volume, because I cary the camera on the shoulder strap of my rucksack with a Spider Light backpacker kit. Now, Olympus has the 12-100 mm F4 pro zoom and the 12-40 mm F2.8 pro zoom. I own both. The former is physically a longer sense, has a longer zoom range but is slower (f4 versus 2.8) compared to the latter. Both are technically excellent and sharp lenses, weather proof, sharp. One big difference is that the 12-100 mm has in lense image stabilization, which partly compensates for the F4. The 12-100 mm is a bit awkward on the shoulder strap, but still ok. The 12-40mm carries more comfortable, especially while using hands for climbing. Which lense would your choose? Would you, for nature photography, accept the compromise of going for the slower lense (going from f2.8 to f4) to gain a longer zoom range (going from 40 mm to 100 mm)? With image stabilization as the other main difference ?
@ForsgardPeter5 жыл бұрын
I would probably go with the 12-100mm f4. The stabilizer kind of makes the aperture difference a lot smaller. But as always in photography, we have to sacrifice something.

It's so compact, I will probably keep it even after I replace it with something superior. It will be good for those times when I'm really casual and don't feel like carying any gear weighing more than 2 lbs. (~1 kg) Based on past experience though, with the Nikon 24-120, I will probably sacrifice some speed in favor of some reach. The IBIS is so good these days, and I shoot so little action that the additional 20mm (40 eq.) really counts for more. I will look and see if Olympus has a 12-60... Thanks for the great video.

I love the ability to change from wide to real zoom with a move of my hand, and the missing stop due to f4 is often compensated by the extra stop of stabilization the lens/house combo provides. Sharpness is excellent at f4 and the practicality more than compensates for the extra 100 grams or so. My desert island lens, period👍

I’m curious about the sound that is made in the video when you do the close up; is that the actual sound of the camera/lens combo? If so it’s a bit harsh for me. I use an E-M5 II with a 14-54mm I and the sound they produce is quite agreeable. I only got the lens at the beginning of January as I was looking for an affordable non neck-breaking alternative to the superlative 50-200mm and I have to say this is my favourite lens even though I’ve had it less than 2 months. I can say this because I take photographs every day sometimes numbering approximately equivalent (lol) to 8 rolls of film. As to improving in my IQ? The answer is an affirmative yes as I will quite happily pick up my camera to take the shot never worrying about social etiquette even if I’m in the middle of a conversation. I am not against the 12-40 but for me it’s a bit expensive and worry it’s a bit short though imagine that that may be negated by the sharpness of the subject at 40mm. I’ve just posted an image on Instagram and doubt the 12-40 could improve the IQ.

My most used was the 14-150 II, because I am normally taking my pictures while hiking and the ability to go from wide to telephoto is useful to grab anything from landscapes, to birds in flight. I do like the 12-40 Pro and used it for a recent engagement shoot which turned out quite well, so I expect it will get more usage soon. My only gripe with the 12-40 Pro is the lens cap. Twice it has come apart (once in the bag) and had to be reassembled. Lucky for me the springs didn't get very far and I was inside when it happened. I can imagine this occurring on a hike and not being able to recover the pieces. Otherwise the construction is amazing. The manual clutch is easy to operate, and the lens doesn't creep (yet at least) when carried. Mine has also been through a flash downpour that I didn't expect and still works good as the first day I purchased it. I think Olympus has the best weather sealing in the business. A while back I purchased a 14-54 mm f2.8 lens and adapted it to my em 10 mk and now my EM5 Mkii, still one of my favorite lens. I am saving for this lens and hopefully i will be able to get it before christmas this year. Thanks Peter great video. Nice review Peter. Just want to ask, with the Olympus OMD EM1 ii, how slow can you take a picture with the Olympus 12-40mm lens handheld? Based on experience. I know this does not have the sync IS of the 12-100mm.

Good review Peter. This was my first Olympus lens and continues to be my favorite. I have owned it for over 2 years and have really tested the waterproof qualities many times and have not had any problems. What function do you usually assign to the lens button?

I don't use it very often, but I have AF Stop assigned to it.

The 12-40 Pro takes about 60% of my photos and has served me well for the last 4 years on E-M5, E-M1 and E-M5 MkII. The rest of my photos are with the 40-150 Pro. Besides the excellent image quality the WR construction means I can take them both out when fly fishing in freshwater or saltwater and survive water splashes, rain or sand. Nobody does compact and tough like Olympus!

Hi Peter, I use the 12-40mm pro lens for most of my shots... I also use the Panasonic 100-400mm f/4.0 lens for birdwatching. I have the Olympus 45mm f/1.2 pro great for portraits and fungi shooting. Awaiting a 12mm f/1.2 from Olympus when they decide to add it to the Pro f/1.2 range. The Panasonic 15mm Leica f/1.7 Summilux is a very good as well. I am very happy with my selection of Olympus and Panasonic lens.

On my Omd e5 I used an 12-60mm, so when I changed for the Omd-em1 I kept using it, but have now bought the 12-40. And yes, I guess that more than 50% of my images are taken with it. I have an 'old' 7-14 f4.0 (again for the e5 camera), an 75-300mm plus the 2 primes 45mm f1.8 and the 75mm 1.8. I am an 'old guy' so right now I am scanning my old slides from Kodachrome 64 films, taken with an OM 2N, and I can say, that thankfully both I and the IQ has gotten a lot better since then. If I have improved the last 3 years I can't tell.

Were those images shown around minutes 3 all without post processing? I feel that the purity of an image must be so, otherwise what is the use of capturing images.
@ForsgardPeter Жыл бұрын
I always edit my images. That has always been done. It was done in the darkroom. Basically there are no unedited photos presented, except slideshows. When they make books from those slides, they edit the images. I think the end result matters and if editing makes it better then edit.

First of all, thanks for the reply. I just bought this lens based on your video and the good things that you had to say about it. I've always believed in the sincerity of capturing the real world as it is given to us at any one time, but the challenge is to capture it when it is at its most unique - when is that? Well that's the challenge. However, I can appreciate the amazing processing that you have done with these images and may possibly look into this. Which darkroom software did you use? Thanks

Shot thousands of images with both the 12-40 and the 12-100. Both have their merits but if I had to choose one it would be the 12-100.. That lens still amazes me with its combination of range, sharpness, and stabilization.

Hi Peter, 12-40 f2.8 is one of my most used lenses as well, especially when we travel. Add a magnificent 40-150 f2.8 and you have a perfect combo. I love ultra wide lenses as well, but in my opinion they are not nearly as versatile as 12-40 mm (although I hope that Olympus will release something like 6/7/8 mm f1.2). Usually I have 25mm f1.2 in my bag, sometimes 45mm f1.2 with me as well, if I want to shoot in a low light conditions. On the other side Olympus 12-100 f4.0 is an interesting option as well for people who don't need f2.8 so often (e.g. landscapes & architecture + daylight). Talking about getting better in photography, on rare occasions I have a chance to try different things out and take many many shots in a short period of time. In the evening when I go through the shots, I can see what approaches worked out and try to learn from it. If you travel, you are often in a hurry, because you want to see more interesting spots & you only have so many hours left. But maybe I am enjoying the process the most, when I don't have to rush too much and have a possibility to plan my shot. But sometimes it's just pure luck, when you are on a completely new location and you discover something magical - light, scene, colours...
@ForsgardPeter5 жыл бұрын
Good point about the process. I think photography is also about the process and not only about the perfect image.

To answer your other question, I did look at some older photos and was dismayed to discover I shot better back then. However I was using an SLR film camera with one lens.., it was all I could afford at the time. My composition, then, just seems more carefully thought out. Now I'm learning all over again.

For me the almost similar Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 is the most used, followed by the pana 14-140mm for traveling in areas where I want more zoom, last time I had 2 cameras with me , the pana G80 and Gx80 with the Panwonic 12-35 mm f2.8 and Pansonic 35-100 mm f2.8, in daytime almost equal to the fabulous Olympus 75 f1.8, that I mostly use for indoor concert photography together with the Olympus 45mm f1.8. For wildlife I carried a second camera with the Oly 75-300 mm , now the bigger Panasonic 100-400mm. Sometimes I just carry wit me the small Panasonic Gm1 with the small Panasonic 20mm 1.8 for (evening) street photography.

Have the Lumix 35-100 2.8, and was trying to find the 12-35 2.8 at a good second hand price, couldn't find one but did find this 12-40 at an excellent price so bought it instead. As you say it is ' boring' on paper but...it's so competent that even though the Lumix 25mm 1.4 is my favourite lens, when I travel it's a gx8, this lens, and the 35-100 f 2.8 as the core of my kit, and a third lens depending on where I'm going and what I want to do. It completely won me over when I made some images of the Irish coast in Donegal and the colours really impressed.

It was the first pro lens I bought. AF didn't work and I had already left Japan so I couldn't return it. It forced me to become better at MF and sometimes the AF does work when I switch the clutch into position. It's a shame they don't hold their value though.

Hi Peter, there is no need to sell me on the Oly 12-40 f2.8. It is a great lens which is sharp and fast. It is the lens which mostly stays on my EM1 MK2. like you, I have the 40-150 f2.8. I have the 7-14 f2.8 as well. This one makes for great wide shots with a nice fast aperture. All the f2.8 lenses are great for low light and preform well.
