hey guys. i had both lenses but i sold the 12mm. I used it for real estate videos but the sharpness was too low. especially if you shoot on one of the a6000 series where you can only shoot in 1080p in 60fps. the 12mm is sharp in the middle but the edges are a mess. pause the frame when the two couches appear side by side. check that clock in the background. all mushy. If you have a camera like the fuji xt3 where you can shoot at 4k 60fps then its totally fine to use the 12mm. but for full hd i am only using the 16mm. of course you have to frame the scene different because of the not so wide field of view. but it works. cheers guys

Your points are very valid and dead on. In a photography perspective though, the 12mm would be great value. Typically wide lenses are used for landscapes or architecture. You would likely be using a tripod so you could use a slower SS. Your subjects would not be moving, so the autofocus would not be so needed. And 4mm is a huge difference in the wide end. 12 is 3/4th of 16mm. That is why I am getting the rokinon for my fuji x t20, over Fuji's 16mm f1.4 for now. For my intended use, the rokinon gives me wayyy more value. The Fuji 16mm Image and build quality would blow the rokinon out the water but it is 1 grand.

I've had the Samyang 12mm for nearly a month now and you're quite correct....I'm thinking of selling ti to buy the Sigma. I needed the Samyang for interior real estate shots but I've found that the photos are only usable on 5.6 and above when the focus is set to infinity. Even then, I've found that the images are still not as sharp as the 16-50mm kit lens.

There's a lot of difference between 12 and 16mm. The 4mm "difference" doesnt matter much when we're talking at longer focal lengths, but it does as we go wider. Ex. while 104mm is 4% narrower than a 100mm, 16mm is 33% narrower than the 12mm though with both 4mm difference. Also there's a lot of difference between a 1.4 and 2.0, that's a full stop difference. Again best thing to do is do ratio (not just subtract the numbers) when comparing lenses. And thanks for the video, finally decided to get the 16mm with the autofocus and the full-stop advantages.
@chrisbrockhurst6 жыл бұрын
MrKockabilly yeh the stop difference and autofocus is extremely useful

I will admit that the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 is one hell of a great lens. However, after playing with and handling the Sigma, I chose the Rokinon 12mm f/2 for my kit. I have gravitated from Canon crop and full-frame DSLR cameras MAINLY because I wanted a smaller and lighter kit which is also why I chose the A6500. I am not a fan of wide angle glass but, when I want a wide lens I WANT A VERY WIDE LENS. I chose the Rokinon because of the size and the weight which is in line with my other lenses... (30mm f/1.4 Sigma, 50mm f/1.8 OSS and the Sony 85mm f/1.8). The Rokinon is half the weight of the Sigma and I purchased a new Rokinon from Adorama for $249 USD while the Sigma lens runs $449 USD from the same vendor. Quite a difference but, not the deciding factor... Since I don't shoot video, the lack of auto focus on the Rokinon doesn't bother me in the last. It is quite easy to manually focus the Rokinon on the A6500 for stills.
@chrisbrockhurst6 жыл бұрын

Great review! It's horses for courses. The Sigma is a very good video lens, the AF appears much improved over the Sigma 30 1.4 I used to have. The Rokinon 12 2.0 is definitely a great stills lens, when you need that little bit more coverage in close quarters indoors, churches museums. And great for astro. Manual focus not a problem with some practice. I use mine with Sony's clear image zoom which gives me 2X reach when needed.
@chrisbrockhurst7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! AF is speedy quick. Clear image zoom is key to focusing properly with MF, the trouble with the Rokinon is when you want to shoot wide open at F2 the focus range is very narrow, so you can focus up with clear image, but then if you move around even slightly its now out of focus. Agreed you can get used to it easily, but it was an annoyance after a whilst. Autofocus is a convenience!

Hi Chris, I am watching this almost a year later. I have the Sigma 16 f1.4 although I am not using it much these days since the a7iii entered my life but I am glad that you mentioned how loose the focus ring is on the Sigma lens- I really would have preferred it to be a bit more resistant. As for the build quality, I think the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 is every bit as good. It seems everyone praises the Sigma but downplays the build of that Tamron lens- both are fine by me . The best lenses for build quality that I have are the Sony 90 f2.8 macro and my 70-200 f.4.

Although I do not have any manual lens for my Panasonic GX85, I can see the advantage of auto focus in street photography, where often lingering with the camera to the eye can cause a self conscious subject to lose his or her photogenic qualities. My Sigma 16mm 1.4, bought off the Sigma website directly as a refurbished model, was $339 delivered. The only "used" anything ever bought, I cannot tell it apart from something new. Undoubtedly having gone through Sigma's rigorous refurbishment.

My choice is really either getting 1 lens or getting 2 lenses. The Sigma 18-35mm is approximately $1,050 with the adapter. Buying the Sigma 16mm ($450) and the Sigma 30mm ($339) would cost a total of $789. I mostly do Short Films, Music Video and Advertisement. What do you recommend? is it worth getting the 18-35 for its zoom range for the aperture of the 16 and 30?
@chrisbrockhurst7 жыл бұрын
great question - I don't own the 18-35mm Sigma but looked at it as an option vs getting the 16mm F1.4. From what I read, the autofocus isn't nearly as fast so thats a big negative for me and part of the reason I wanted the 16mm F1.4 in the first place (the AF is quick!!) For short films and the other stuff you could probably get away the 16mm for the wide shots and then the 30mm for the closer stuff, realistically all shots are going to be planned and shot then redone, so you can always swap lenses between takes, how often are you really going to be zooming mid shot? However as I mentioned in my other review of the Sigma 30mm F1.4, AF isn't 100% accurate and MF is not good on the 30mm F1.4. Maybe look at the Sony 50mm instead? Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.

The Sig has to be stopped to about 2.8 to start to get rid of star trails. Also with astro you want a wider angle to get as much view in the picture as you can. If you main focus is going to be astro get the rok, its cheaper, preforms better, and you dont have to worry about autofocusing messing up your shot ;). Just do more research so you can see, there are a few comparisons out there for these. There is a reason everyone in astro talks about rok 12mm.

Will get the samyang in a few days and see how I like it. I already have 16mm AF OSS with the kit lense but want wider. Music was a bit to loud some times other than thet great video! Keep it up
@chrisbrockhurst7 жыл бұрын
thanks for watching and the feedback about the music. The 16mm kit lens is ok for video, as long as you shoot 4K IMO. But the Sigma 16mm blows it away for low light and bokeh. Try out the Samyang and let me know what you think, its the same lens as the Rokinon! I bet you will be wanting the autofocus after a while.

Why is no one doing a comparison against the rokinon/samyang 16mm f2.0. I have it and it has even less CA problems than 12mm and I think it is the most fair 16 vs 16mm
@chrisbrockhurst6 жыл бұрын
Good question!
@ElRealista.6 жыл бұрын
Chris Brockhurst have you checked it? I think it is because is APS-C lens, but sigma too. I bought the samyang 16mm f2.0 at only 170 dollars in a good discount in Amazon. I was looking for the sigma but it was a huge difference for my budget.

Chris, I have family in Canada and was in Alberta in the summer of 2017. I have a question is the Rokinon not so good for Landscape ?
@chrisbrockhurst6 жыл бұрын
Stefan Schütt the rokinon will be great for landscape too, if you have the time to focus it properly. The infinity marker (which you want for landscape photography) isn’t accurate so you’ll want to figure out the infinity focus point yourself and maybe mark on the lens where is it. You can do that with focus peaking

Wide Open Aperture Productions yeh man it’s a great lens, shame Sigma didn’t come out with it sooner! The autofocus alone is enough to want it. Sell that rokinon and put it towards the sigma, you should still get a couple hundred for the rokinon

Thanks for uploading this video, however I don't understand the purpose of this video, these are two lenses with very different focal lengths, one is auto-focus the other manual, one is f/2 the other f/1.4, one is AF the other manual. It's like comparing a TV to a dishwasher, ok maybe not. Lens manufacturers release primes with 2mm differences to fill a gap in their line up and here you're comparing lenses with 4mm difference! No image quality was tested, which is an essential aspect of a lens if not THE most essential, also using a manual lens on a gimble would negate the gimble entirely due to your hand movement while you're focusing. As far as which should I buy? Well if I need the 12mm then I will obviously buy the 12mm without even considering the 16mm, AF or not. If I don't need the 12mm then I wouldn't need to compare the two. I think it is best to compare lenses with similar features, with a max 1mm difference, both AF or both manual, both similar aperture (1.4 vs 1.8), etc..
