In this shoot I head out with my buddy Ian to nearby Gusted Hall Woods.
There's a spot in the field with a pretty decent view of Southend in the distance which I thought would make a pretty cool backdrop.
Thought I'd take the chance to use all 3 Sigma Prime lenses on the same shoot so you guys can get an idea of how each one performs.

The 16mm is definitely an excellent lens for environmental portraits - although the 56mm is still my favourite ;)

The 56mm were great too but reminded me of fashion photography too much, which is not a bad thing but in these photos the environment is part of the photo as much as the model. Would love more comparisons like these in different scenarios.

Hi Stuart, I'm planning to buy 16mm and one portrait lens. I'm too too confused b/w 30mm & 56mm. I want to know few things from you on 30mm vs 56mm, Except the focal length , are the any major differences in these 2 lens in terms of autofocus speed and sharpness. 16mm is 400$ , 56mm is also 400$ but 30mm is sold at 260$. I want to know if there any specific drawback of 30mm when compared to 56mm.

I like it because I love taking portraits. Although if it’s your first lens id probably still recommend the 30mm. You’ll still get nice portraits but it’s just that bit more versatile 👍🏻

I guess it all depends what your filming - although you’ll probably be better off with the 16 or 30. The 56mm will probably be too tight in most situations

All of the images from this shoot had no Profile Corrections applied so hopefully you'll be able to see for yourself. And yup - they were all shot with AF (face & eye detection activated) - the AF works really well on these lenses 👍🏻

Hey Dusty - I guess it all depends what kinda stuff you're going to use it for? Personally I love taking portraits so the 56mm is perfect for me. If you had more varied uses the 30mm will be probably be more versatile. Hope that helps!

Must admit, I’ve thought about getting the 18-105 myself - I’m sure it will be great in good light, and I think you can still get great bokeh when shooting at the telescopic end. A tough decision for sure! The Sigma glass is super sharp though - I’m in love with the 56mm.

Thanks Luca - appreciate the comments 👍. Yes, it has crossed my mind, and if I started taking more professional jobs on then yes, I'd invest in something like a A73. But whilst I'm more in the 'enthusiastic amateur' camp - I'm more than happy with the results from the APSC setup. Plus - shooting RAW takes up enough space as it is - let alone 47Mb RAW FF files!

Thanks so much for the feedback 🙏🏻 I believe I used the Rode Videomicro for this video - with the gain turned down on my Mac and speaking closely to the Mic to try and get that podcast sound
