Hello Andy, thanks for this video. I'm a bit late, from my experience 4 years ago shooting with the lumix 12-35II on a G85 and Sigma 18-35 on a GH4 I was shocked how the image was sharp on the Sigma, even with the metabones. I sold the lumix 12-35 later. Greetings!

Hi Andy. Whats the best way to set focus on the sigma 18-35 while its on a gimbal with the GH5? Normally in a wedding shoot, I set my GH5 to manual-focus mode and I use the tap-focus on the display screen to set my focus quickly. That way the gimbal remains steady as opposed to turning the barrel of the lens to achieve the same effect. Plus its lightning fast. With the sigma lens attached, the GH5 refuses to do tap-screen manual focus. Any suggestions?

I though about another combo : 12-35mm Panasonic + Adaptater Canon + 50mm Canon (it will cost around 1100€) I don't know... Else what lens is better for background blur (like the 50mm for the canon) Panasonic or Sigma+Metabones?.
@AndyVNguyen6 жыл бұрын
Depends on your needs. What do you shoot? I would get the 42.5 1.7 for background blur before I use a dumb adapter with Canon glass. I want the AF for the background blur shots. Sigma 18-35 with speed booster has way better background blur than Panasonic 12-35. Sigma 18-35 with speed booster is 1.2 aperture, equivalent to background blur of 2.4 aperture on full frame. So that’s closer to f1.8 of the standard canon 50mm on full frame. Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 is equivalent to 5.6 aperture on full frame.

If you’re filming yourself, I would go for the 12-35. You’ll need native glass for the autofocus. The sigma 18-35 would have to be manual focused which would be a hassle if you’re a one person crew. As far as I understand, blurring the background is unnecessary for green screen. People do green screen even with webcams. I would spend the money in a 42.5 1.7 by Panasonic for b-roll of products if that’s something you need. But for most of your shots, Panasonic 12-35.

Don't buy the Metabones, buy the Viltrox EF-M2. It has the same sharpness, it has the same vignetting, it's basically the same thing, except for the price. Thanks for doing this. I think your evaluation is very pragmatic and honest. I use the Panasonic 12-35 and the Olympus 12-40. Why? I shoot a lot of live theatre, concerts and dance competitions. On my wide shot I use the Olympus because it has a manual focus clutch. I can set the focus and leave it. Even if I turn on and off the camera or change the battery, the focus will not change. I use the Panasonic 12-35 for many of the same reasons you outlined, and occasionally instead of the 35-100 on my close up camera, I need to go to something wider.

Hi Andy, that's a really nice review. I have a question to you. I just acquired a GH5 and I was looking for a standard zoom lens with constant aperture. So now I'm hesitant between the Pana 12-35 and the Oly 12-40 f2.8. Do you have any experience with the Oly? It has a nice manual focus option that is not by wire. Their price is really similar. I really don't know which to choose 🤔

I love the Panasonic 12-35 with the GH5 for the dual IS. It is unmatched. Unfortunately, the mkI has a poor manual focus ring. The mkII is a little better but is still by wire. You have to make the choice if you want the dual IS or the better focus ring. I would go for the dual IS so that I can skip using a gimbal. Focus pulls end up being a little harder sometimes, but for the work that I do (more run and gun) I don't need the Oly's focus ring.

However, somehow I don't get much focus peaking and I'm wondering if that has anything to do with DFD, which is a Pana lens only feature (also, it could be used for autofocus too). I'm still hesitant, but at the moment I'm bending towards the Pana mkII lens :)

Hello. You are using a Panasonic Lumix GH camera and a Sigma AF 18-35mm lens with a Viltrox EF-M1 adapter. If you focus on the subject, and change the focal length of the lens (18 - 35 or 35 - 18). Does the subject remain sharp? The sharpness disappears on my camera, and I need to focus a second time. When using a Panasonic 12 -38, 2.8 lens, there is no such effect. I change the focal length and the subject is constantly in focus. What do you think is the cause of the effect with Sigma AF 18-35mm.
@AndyVNguyen4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Neither lens is parfocal so zooming will change the focus. The f2.8 of the panasonic 12-35 may just be more forgiving when wide open due to f1.2 vs 2.8.

Love this video, man. Thank you. I recently picked up a GH5 (right before a pandemic, perfect time right?) and up to this point I've only ever had Nikon bodies and lenses, so I'm using the Viltrox adapter for those lenses. I don't care about the lack of autofocus since I shoot a lot of concerts, music videos, and events, and I just want to perfect my manual focusing anyway. I have the same issue you do with the adapter having some wiggle with the body (it's rock solid on the lens though), but I have a Niceyrig cage, not the SmallRig one (it was cheaper and basically the same thing as far as I can tell), so time will tell if that support is compatible with my setup, but it's cheap and I can return it so who cares. I do plan on getting the 12-35mm in the future though since I use a gimbal sometimes and I would like to be able to have SOME degree of autofocus with it.
@AndyVNguyen4 жыл бұрын
I've been using my cameras so much more since the pandemic, because of KZbin :). Nice! So does that cage have an mount to support the viltrox adapter? The 12-35 autofocus is pretty usable on static subjects. Just use it within its limitations and you'll get great results!

@@AndyVNguyen I've been bandying about starting to make some semi-consistent KZbin videos, but it's mostly the quandary of getting over being nervous in front of the camera. Not something I'm used to, haha. It has the same two holes that every other cage I've looked at has, so I -think- it will work. It's virtually identical to the SmallRig one, but without having both side by side in front of me it's hard to tell. That's good to know. I shoot a lot of events and concerts so hopefully it would be able to register at least some low light.

@AndyVNguyen6 жыл бұрын
The Sigma will give you f1.2 vs the f1.7 of the Panasonic. This is about 1 stop of light. 1 stop of light is iso 400 vs iso 200, for example. I hope my math is correct. It all depends on your use. The Sigma 18-35 f1.8 can give you about ~25mm equivalent focal length on the wide end, but is SUPER heavy. The 25mm f1.7 gives you 50mm equivalent focal length, so it's much tighter. If you need the wide shots and don't mind the weight and heft, go for the Sigma. If the portability of the m43 system is important for you, then you'll have to work with the tighter framing of the 25mm f1.7. But it will be MUCH lighter.

If you need low light, Sigma 18-35 hands down. If that's too heavy/cumbersome, use the 25 1.7. I personally don't recommend the 42.5 f1.7 for video work, as it is very very situational. The 25 f1.7 is more versatile.

Anybody who can enlighten me ? Putting the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 on the GH5 makes it then a 24-70mm???
@AndyVNguyen5 жыл бұрын
12-35 on GH5 has a 2x crop factor, so it is a 24-70. The 12-35 is normal zoom lens. Don’t worry, it is very confusing in the beginning! If you want a wide angle lens, you’ll want the Leica 8-18 or Panasonic 7-14. If you have a speedbooster you can get the tokina 11-16 for EF mount as well. Speedboosters apply 0.71x crop, and then you apply 2x crop for the sensor. So the tokina 11-16 becomes 11 x 0.71 x 2 = 15.6mm at the wide end, which is wider than 24mm
@leamorelli10755 жыл бұрын
@@AndyVNguyen That seem all so much more clear now thank you so much ! And yes I have a metabones speedbooster. Does that mean then that my TAMRON 24-70mm with the speedbooster is actually a a 35 - 100mm (24 x 0,71 x 2 & 70 x 0,71 x 2 ) ? I actually thought of the Leica 8-18 first, but i'm mostly doing documentaries and a lot of time hand held. I'm kind of scared not too cover a big enough range of focal. Even though, i think with a wide angle i'll use more often a tripod for those shots, I still wonder if it's as flexible as a 12-35.
@AndyVNguyen5 жыл бұрын
@@leamorelli1075 Yes, just about. That's gonna be a little bit more tight than a regular standard zoom (24-70). For documentaries, I highly recommend the 12-35 f2.8. Grab a small LED panel to support it like the Viltrox (amzn.to/31c3pQU). The stabilization with the GH5 is AMAZING and you can use tripod lock to really get a stable frame if you don't move around. This way you can stay nimble and not get tied down with a gimbal. Can perhaps even skip the monopod/tripod in a lot of situations. The 8-18 is definitely not as flexible. I only ever considered buying it for vlogging, where the ultrawide is preferred. There are wide primes that you can throw on as well. The Laowa 7.5mm f2 comes to mind (amzn.to/2UPSgTv) This lens is equivalent 15mm, so it's a really good wide option. It's also small. So just throw it on your camera for a wide shot and then switch back to the 12-35 f2.8. Hope that helps!

I have two g85's but on manual focus I've lost a few important shots due to the high pressure situations despite about 6 months of consistent practice on manual. It's tough to rack focus consistently when run-and-gunning all day. The sony a7iii has excellent autofocus but that's about all I like about it. I'm so confused.
@AndyVNguyen5 жыл бұрын
Ramy, I shot my first few weddings with manual focus. I would recommend shooting at F4 if you're missing focus a lot, and move down to F2.8 once you get a little better. When using manual focus, I try not to use the prime lenses for the run and gun sections. So if I'm running around I'll do 12-35 f2.8 on f4. If I have some control, I'll use the Sigma 18-35 f1.8. After time you'll get used to the distance. And if you miss part of a shot, perhaps you can slow it down in post to stretch out the moments that ARE in focus. I use the Sony A7III for autofocus, but if there's a lot of things going on in a shot or if I'm doing b-roll, sometimes it doesn't autofocus on what I want.

Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is a workhorse lens that you'll use for 90% of your shooting. Using 42.5 1.2 with the GH5 made me forget about using FF for photos, though. It's just so sharp and the bokeh is so buttery. It's not the craziest thinnest DOF like 1.2 on FF, but it's really beautiful for the bokeh that it provides.

Another benefit of the rc2 is that you’d be able to quick release your camera without messing with your balance gimbal.

Hey i got the same set up, but my metabones let ne go only until 1.3 not 1.2, is it defect?
@AndyVNguyen6 жыл бұрын
Not sure.. mine shows 1.2. But the math is f1.8 x 0.71 = 1.278 so 1.3 is correct.

The Panasonic Leica 10-25 f1.7 will be close! No adapter needed. But it is $1,700 USD..

@@PhotoAzbuka Yeah the price is crazy.. I am definitely sticking with my Sigma. The Sigma 18-35 is heavy so it feels more stable in the hand while handholding, so I stick with it.

Just decrease your shutter angle 1 or 2 degrees and autofocus becomes reborn!
@AndyVNguyen5 жыл бұрын
Autofocus is totally usable for static shots with the 12-35! The firmware update fixed it up. Sigma 18-35 is a hard no though. Adapted lenses don’t really work well

I don't think f stops and bokeh works that way, 2.8 is still 2.8, since ur not using it on full frame(then It would be 5.6) but m43
@AndyVNguyen5 жыл бұрын
Yep, you're right. 2.8 is still 2.8. The frame is just tighter so you have to back up to get similar framing, which is what lessens the blurred background. It's just easier shorthand to say 2.8 bokeh on M43 is equivalent to 5.6 bokeh on FF. Regarding exposure, 2.8 is always 2.8, no matter what sensor.

Awww. I hold the camera like that :/ 12:40
@AndyVNguyen6 жыл бұрын
Haha! The most optimal way of holding the camera is to have your left hand under the lens. This allows you to get your elbow closer to your body, as well as having your hand "support" the camera. Both of these things will give you a more stable shot.. especially when shooting video!
